5 Previous Employment: Nambour General Hospital, I held a number of positions during this time including that of Clinical Nurse, Acting Nurse Educator (ICU and Surgical), Registered Nurse and Clinical Lecturer for Queensland University of Technology. I commenced employment at Nambour General Hospital in July 1998 initially working on the hospital pool. However, my main experience during this time was in the Intensive Care Unit. ICU Registered Nurse Level 1: -From January 1999 onwards Nambour General Hospital intensive care unit is a busy 14 bed unit, helping a wide range of clients. During this time I acted in various higher positions including as a Clinical Nurse and also as an educator for the unit. My experience in this role included: - The management of critically ill patients. - As both Floor Coordinator and Team Leader: 1. Roles that requires a high standard of patient care and depth of knowledge, to enable one to assist all other staff in their care of their patients. 2. The ability to use time available to educate other staff in the use of the equipment, and to guide them when making clinical decisions. 3. The wider perspective of making decisions about workplace health and safety issues, quality issues and issues that impact on the whole shift, as well as the ability to bring these issues to the attention of the team leader. 4. The ability to take on the team leader role for meal relief - Communication with the relatives of patients. - Coordinating family and clinical discussions with medical and other members of the team. - To assist with any social needs that may be required by the families of patients. - To act as a role model for all colleagues. I participated in additional activities, for example, I was an Impact Member (Infection control), Chairman of the Palliative and Long Stay Committee and also relieved in the Stores and Equipment role. I gave educational presentations on: - Policy and procedure writing. - Preceptor for Student and Registered Nurses. Clinical Nurse: -Both acting position, then permanently from 2000 My experience included a continuation of all activities undertaken as a level 1, as well further responsibilities such as: - Team Leading: The management of 10 to 11 staff and all the care of the patients, ensuring safe and excellent care for all the patients, staff and visitors. - Assisting the Workplace Health and Safety Officer. - Impact Representative: In this role completed audits and educational presentations. - Chairman of the Working Party for Palliative and Long Stay Patients. 6 - Clinical lecturer for QUT in 2003 and Acting Nurse Educator: -I relieved both the ICU educator and the Surgical Ward educator during the last three years of my time at Nambour General Hospital As the ICU Educator I was responsible for many things including: - The direct support and educational needs and requirements of up to staff within the unit. - The 8-10 staff completing the Intensive Care Transition Program, which includes the clinical (CPAT) assessments of these students. - Conducting the educational sessions at Nambour General Hospitals mandatory orientation. - Coordinating and conducting a wide range of in-service needs for a multidisciplinary forum, using a wide range of educational strategies such as telemedicine, one on one education and power point presentations. - Coordinating Nambour General Hospitals refresher program. - Organising the placement of undergraduate students within Intensive Care, and assisting them in reaching their educational goals. - Preceptor for Registered Nurses during their Postgraduate placement. As the Surgical Division Educator I was responsible for: - Meeting the ongoing educational requirements as they arose within the surgical division at Nambour General Hospital (NGH). - Conducting the educational sessions at NGHs mandatory orientation. - The research, authoring and presentation of power point education sessions. - Ongoing assessment of basic life support throughout Nambour General Hospital. Noosa District Private Hospital, January June 1998 Nurse Unit Manager The role involved the coordination of clinical nurses for a 24 Surgical/ Orthopaedic Ward and 10 bed Surgical Day procedure unit. General duties included: - Relieving the Director of Nursing for annual leave and call. - Roster preparation. - Appraisals, using the NCES system for assessing competency, developed by the PHAQ, I also had involvement in the 1996 revision of the system. - Managing the budget for Surgical and Day Procedures. - The implementation and coordination of the patient dependency system for the hospital. - Policy and procedure formulation for the two units, as well as coordinating the hospitals Nursing Policy and Procedures. - Quality activities for the surgical and day procedure units. - Implementation of the clinical Pathways and Patient education for the Surgical Ward. - EQUIP implementation within the ward setting. - Stomal therapy resource. - Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation assessor.
