1 Rhodes Hellenic Regulatory Body of Nurses (H.R.B.of N.) Pan-Hellenic & Pan-European Scientific & Professional ursing Conference Under the auspices of Capsis Hotel Rhodes May 2009

2 Chairperson's Greeting Ladies and gentlemen, It was with great pleasure that we accepted the decision of our elected representatives to hold the 2nd Pan-Hellenic Scientific & Professional Nursing Conference in Rhodes from the 12th to the 15th of May at the Capsis Hotel Rhodes - a conference that is being prepared with great care and whose success will be enhanced by your participation. This scientific initiative was launched with great success in Lefkada last year, with a turnout of 4,000 delegates, and is the foremost Professional and Scientific Nursing institution in our country as far as conferences go. My personal satisfaction is multiplied by the fact that recently, from the 27th to the 29th of November, the 4th Annual International Conference of the European Council of Nursing Regulators (FEPI), a conference that we also organised with success, was held in Thessaloniki. In the capital of northern Greece we realised the international need for a pan-european professional and scientific meeting to address not only issues pertaining to the Legal Entities (the national nursing regulators) but also the Nurses themselves, who are faced with the new challenge of the times: the mobility between European countries of both Professional Nurses and patients seeking medical care in European countries. Having taken note of this demand and with the prompting and support of FEPI, we now venture to organise ENE's 02

3 2nd Pan-Hellenic and 1st Pan-European Scientific & Professional Nursing Conference in Rhodes, hoping that from now on ENE's annual, Pan-European, conference will be a pole of attraction and a forum for the discussion of issues concerning Nursing, patients and/or the general population, both in Greece and in Europe. I am certain that the debate between the speakers and the delegates, Greek and foreign colleagues, will prove to be particularly useful to both sides and the conclusions drawn from the individual discussions will serve in the performance of our duties. Eminent scientists from Europe and the Americas have been invited and will attend, to communicate to us the different environment prevailing in their countries not only in the area of knowledge and education but also in day-to-day nursing. We look forward to seeing you in Rhodes. The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the E.N.E. (HRBofN) Dimitris Skoutelis 03

12 A brief note on Rhodes The island of Rhodes is situated at the crossroads of two major sea routes of the Mediterranean, between the Aegean Sea and the coast of the Middle East. During its centuries-long history, Rhodes has lain in the path of different civilisations, and the people that have inhabited it have left their traces on every aspect of the island's identity: on art, language, architecture. Its strategic position brought wealth to the island and made the city of Rhodes one of the prominent cities of antiquity. Rhodes is the largest island of the Dodecanese. The island's capital is located on its northernmost tip and is also the capital of the prefecture of the Dodecanese. For half a century the Colossus, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, stood at the entrance of its harbour. In the centre of the capital is the Medieval City, which was designated a World Heritage City in The Medieval City of Rhodes is the combined result of different architectures from different historic eras, predominantly those of the Knights of St. John (14th-15th c.) and of the Ottoman occupation.
