Pastoral Care & Counseling Department and Spiritual Life P.A.C ASBURY METHODIST VILLAGE GAITHERSBURG, MARYLAND Mrs. Lila Harvey, Co-Chairperson Spiritual Life Partnership Advisory Committee (PAC) Rev. Anne Ellestad, Director of Pastoral Care & Counseling Co-Chairperson of the Spiritual Life Partnership Advisory Committee (PAC) January 2015
PASTORAL CARE AND COUNSELING DEPARTMENT VISION STATEMENT The culture of AMV is such that every resident and every associate experiences the fullness of spiritual, emotional, and psychological well-being through all the circumstances of their lives. PASTORAL CARE AND COUNSELING DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT To cultivate spiritual-based relationships with residents and associates. THE SPIRITUAL LIFE PARTNERSHIP ADVISORY COMMITTEE (PAC) serves in an advisory capacity to the Pastoral Care and Counseling Department in planning and delivering programs and services that address the spiritual, emotional, and psychological needs of the residents of Asbury Methodist Village.
ASBURY METHODIST VILLAGE SPIRITUAL LIFE PAC GOALS 1. Promote the Vision and Mission of the Pastoral Care and Counseling Department. 2. Support the programs and services of the Pastoral Care and Counseling Department through planning, participation, presence, and recruitment of volunteers. 3. Honor the principles of diversity and inclusion in PAC membership. 4. Continue to serve the community beyond AMV by sharing offerings from worship services with selected organizations. 5. Continue to serve the community beyond AMV by participating in programs, events, and activities that support partnerships between AMV and the city of Gaithersburg. 6. Continue to sponsor vocal and instrumental concerts.
The Pastoral Care and Counseling Department is pleased to include the following in its portfolio of services and programs. Each relates to the Vision and Mission of the department and to the Lifestyle of Wellness that is actively promoted at Asbury Methodist Village. THE CARING MINISTRY OF AMV The Caring Ministry of Asbury Methodist Village is a resident-led ministry of the Pastoral Care and Counseling Department. Caring Ministers are residents who have been trained as Stephen Ministers or who have participated in a Pastoral Care and Counseling training program. The ministry is one of supporting, encouraging, and befriending residents who find themselves in life situations where a listening ear, a compassionate spirit, and a loving heart help to make the resident s life situation less challenging. Caring Ministers honor the confidentiality requirement that is an ethical component of all helping relationships and, while Caring Ministers do not give advice, they do assist in the exploration of options when the presenting concern involves decision-making. Caring Ministers meet monthly for continuing education and supervision. These monthly meetings provide opportunities to enhance care-giving skills and serve as a means by which Caring Ministers deepen their relationships with each other. Anne Porter (x 6894) is the resident leader of the Caring Ministers and works closely with the Director of Pastoral Care and Counseling in providing support to residents. Give her a call if you are interested in serving as a Caring Minister or if you would like to have a Caring Minister assigned to you. BELOVED COMMUNITY INITIATIVE The Beloved Community Initiative is a partnership that began in 2010 between Asbury Methodist Village, the city of Gaithersburg, the Office of the Montgomery County Executive, and Wesley Theological Seminary. The vision of a Beloved Community is set forth in Isaiah 65 where God is actively doing something new. That which is being created is a community "where love and justice rule; where everyone s worth is affirmed; where diversity enriches all lives through common memories and a shared future; where stories inspire hope; and where all are loved unconditionally and forever." A Resident Advisory Committee exists to help shape how AMV participates in creating such a community. This group has elected to focus its energies on developing and nurturing relationships with the young people of Gaithersburg through participation, on campus and beyond, in activities in which the young people have expressed interest and for which the city has programs and services that support these interests. Residents are currently engaged with youth in the city through collaborative community partnerships with Gaithersburg Identity; the City of
Gaithersburg Student Union; Interages; Goals for Girls; Heyman Interages Center; Gaithersburg Elementary School; Gaithersburg Middle School; Joanne Miller, Teaching Artist; and Gaithersburg High School. Representatives from these groups have enabled meaningful relationships with children, youth and parents who live in the neighborhood surrounding the Asbury campus. Hal Garman (x 6436) is the resident coordinator for this important initiative and you are invited to contact him to learn more about how you can become a positive influence in the life of a young person who is waiting for someone like you to come along and help make a difference. CAMPUS-WIDE MENTAL HEALTH TEAM The Campus-wide Mental Health Team is a group of residents and associates committed to enhancing the spiritual, emotional and psychological well-being of all AMV residents. The team was founded in 2010 by the Pastoral Care and Counseling Department to address mental health issues affecting older adults. The team has sponsored a series of educational programs for the AMV community. Topics have included depression, memory loss, substance abuse, anxiety, end-of-life concerns, grief, hearing and vision loss. The goal is to raise awareness of the prevalence of these challenges as well as to offer appropriate interventions and services. The leadership of the Asbury Methodist Village Campus-wide Mental Health Team has been transferred from the Pastoral Care and Counseling Department to the Wellness Department. The Pastoral Care and Counseling Department will continue to be involved with the mental health education and advocacy and will remain as contributing members to the Campus-wide Mental Health Team. THE COMMITTEE ON ETHICS AND ORGANIZATIONAL IDENTITY The Pastoral Care and Counseling Department convenes The Committee on Ethics and Organizational Identity. The Committee exists to support decision making that is compatible with the mission, vision, values, and guiding principles of Asbury Methodist Village. This is accomplished by providing an unbiased forum for the discussion of ethical dilemmas. The dilemmas on which the Committee will consult address matters related to bioethical concerns and organizational behavior. The Committee serves in an advisory capacity and its recommendations do not supplant the right of residents, family members, associates, and administration to assume final responsibility for their own decisions.
INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS Through partnerships with Loyola University Maryland (Columbia, MD) and Howard University School of Divinity (Washington, DC), Asbury Methodist Village, through the Pastoral Care and Counseling Department, provides opportunities for students to gain practical experience as they complete their programs of study in Pastoral Counseling (Loyola University Maryland) and Pastoral Care (Howard University). Loyola students focus on developing their skills as counselors and therapists and, typically, remain in their assignments for a complete academic year. Any resident who may be experiencing a stressor that compromises her or his spiritual, emotional, and psychological well-being is invited to contact the Pastoral Care and Counseling Department to request the support of an intern. The interns are supervised, on campus, by Pastoral Care and Counseling staff who are professionally certified to supervise interns. They are also supervised by at least two professional counselors/therapists associated with Loyola University Maryland. The services of these interns, like those of all members of the Pastoral Care and Counseling Department, are at no cost to residents. Howard University School of Divinity students focus on developing their pastoral care skills and, typically, remain in their assignments for one semester (10 weeks). Their assignments are limited to the Wilson Health Care Center and their services are at no cost to residents. These interns are supervised, on campus, by Pastoral Care and Counseling staff who are professionally certified to supervise interns, in addition to the supervision provided by their professor at Howard University School of Divinity.
The Director and Staff Pastors of the Pastoral Care and Counseling Department are endorsed by their denominations to serve in this specialized ministry at Asbury Methodist Village. The services of the Department are available to all residents, regardless of faith tradition (including residents who claim no faith tradition). Members of the Department do not proselytize, do not value their faith traditions over others, and do not make distinctions that will marginalize any segment of the community. Our ministry is one of love for, service to, and support of all residents and associates who live and work at Asbury Methodist Village. PASTORAL CARE AND COUNSELING STAFF DIRECTOR REV.
