2 Pastoral Care Specialist (PCS) Pastoral Care Specialist is a general membership category within the American Association of Pastoral Counselors (AAPC). In the religious tradition of the care of souls, persons pursuing this designation aspire to a high level of ministry and accountability within their respective ministry contexts as providers of brief, supportive pastoral care and counseling. Successful completion of the Pastoral Care Specialist (PCS) Training Program of the Pastoral Counseling Centers of Tennessee, Inc. (PCCT) is intended to provide experiences, which may prepare persons to make formal application to the AAPC for general membership in this category. Mission Statement The purpose of the PCS Program of PCCT is to provide educational, consultative and evaluative experiences for congregation clergy, chaplains, and other professional and lay pastoral caregivers in the theory and practice of brief, supportive pastoral care and counseling. Objectives To enhance knowledge of human growth and development as it affects the personal and professional life of the caregiver, as well as those served. To acquire pastoral care, counseling, and referral skills relevant to the participant s service setting. To develop pastoral leadership skills (assessment, diagnosis, decision making, conflict resolution, and problem solving) and group skills (group process) to provide understanding for a more effective ministry. To strengthen pastoral identity and ministry practice by building confidence, knowledge, and openness within the caregiver. To understand ethnic, gender, and other individual differences and their impact on faith and values in the application of ministry.

3 Curriculum Didactic Seminars feature faculty members presenting on topics such as: Orientation: Pastoral care and counseling in historical perspective Narrative Theology Care of the caregiver Pastoral assessment and diagnosis Pastoral ethics and the law in care and counseling Developmental theory Systems Theory Spiritual Direction Counseling Diverse Populations Pastoral Care & Depression The Family Life Cycle Marriage preparation Brief marital and family therapy Crisis intervention Grief and loss Divorce recovery Pastoral care and counseling with children and adolescents Blending families Pastoral care and counseling for older adults and their families Substance abuse: A pastoral care and counseling response Pastoral Care across cultural lines Identification and intervention in abusive relationships. Attention will be given during presentations to the formulation of an annotated bibliography and the art of referral. Clinical Consultation will be conducted in a group atmosphere of acceptance, support, and respect as participants share verbatims and tapes of brief pastoral care and counseling experiences in order to enhance personal and professional integration and to develop skills as a pastoral care specialist. A Peer Group forms through participation in didactic seminars and clinical consultation and provides a confidential setting in which personal growth and the use of self are encouraged through processing feelings and reactions, exploration of personal and professional issues, and receipt of feedback from group members.

4 Evaluations occur at the middle and the end of the training program within a small group context. The participant s written self-reflection and feedback from peers and faculty will focus on areas of strengths and areas for potential growth. Transcripts and a Certificate of Completion will be awarded to persons who successfully complete the Pastoral Care Specialist Training Program. Successful completion of this program requires attendance at each meeting. Should a participant miss a meeting, arrangements must be made with the respective case consultant to determine alternate assignments. Applicants Welcomed Clergy, religious, and lay ministers from all faiths are welcome. Participant and faculty diversity adds richness to the program. Faculty members are clinical pastoral therapists who are acquainted with the pressures of pastoral ministry in various settings. PCCT does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, creed, or social status. The program seeks to integrate the best that religion and clinical pastoral therapy have to offer. All participants must be in a position of service in their congregation or other part of their life where they are recognized and consulted as a care provider. In general, a minimum of a Bachelor s degree is recommended for participation in this program. A letter to document the applicant s education by the religious body must accompany the application. Religious Community Relationship Membership in good standing in a recognized religious body which endorses the applicant s pastoral care Continuous responsible relationship with a local religious community Experience Evidence of three years of service as a minister or lay leader Demonstrated growing maturity in one s identity and roles as a professional religious leader

We have been providing these services and training clergy in Pastoral Care and Counseling since 1985.
