September 26 (Sat) 7:30 p.m. Stevens Center The UNCSA Symphony Orchestra launches its season with a colorful cornucopia of musical treats featuring two of its virtuoso artist faculty, violist Sheila Browne and newly arrived oboist Dr. Merideth Hite. Brahms and de Falla round out this rousing and uplifting program. Music Director Christopher James Lees conducts. Opera Scenes September 27 (Sun) 2:00 p.m. Freedman Theatre An afternoon at the opera: Fletcher Fellows perform scenes from the repertoire. FREE UNCSA Wind Ensemble October 7 (Wed) 7:30 p.m. Stevens Center Come and enjoy an evening with the UNCSA Wind Ensemble. Clarinet professor Oskar Espina-Ruiz performs Oscar Navarro s Il Concerto for Clarinet and Wind Band. You will be enthralled with music from both the past and the present. Discover music with roots in the traditional band world as well as new works that will take you to new sonic worlds. UNCSA Jazz Ensemble October 15 (Thur) 7:30 p.m. Freedman Theatre The award-winning UNCSA Jazz Ensemble, directed by Ron Rudkin, will perform a program offering an extensive range of Big Band jazz styles, including traditional swing, Latin, fusion, and contemporary. The performance will feature the group s most talented jazz soloists and highlight different sections of the band. Luscious Duos October 17 (Sat) 7:30 p.m. Watson Hall These works aren't programmed nearly enough! Virtuosic works originally for viola and harp by Arnold Bax and Quincy Porter, as well as new transcriptions by the artists of Bach s Gamba Sonata Number Two, Britten s Lachrymae, and Seven Popular Songs by Manuel de Falla. Trumpet and Piano Provocative Premieres: Powerful and Poignant October 20 (Tue) 7:30 p.m. Watson Hall Judith Saxton and Allison Gagnon celebrate their ten years of collaboration with some new works by trumpeter/composers: Stanley Friedman s Sonata #2 in F Minor (world premiere); Brazilian-American Luis Engelke s Sonata (SE premiere), Kevin McKee s Song for my Friend (for John Wacker, commissioning consortium premiere) and Jim Stephenson s Silent Echoes.

2 Chrysalis Chamber Music Institute presents Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center October 24 (Sat) 7:30 p.m. Watson Hall UNCSA s partnership with Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center begins with a weekend of events culminating in a performance of music by Ligeti, Rimsky-Korsakov, Magnard and Poulenc, performed by Jean- Efflam Bavouzet, piano; Tara Helen O Connor, flute; Stephen Taylor, oboe; Romie de-guise Langois, clarinet; Peter Kolkay, bassoon; Radovan Vlatkovic, horn. SPECIAL EVENT PRICING: $25 Regular/ $20 Student Concerto Competition October 25 (Sun) 2 p.m. Watson Hall UNCSA School of Music graduating students compete in the final round of the annual Fall Concerto Competition. Winner(s) earn the opportunity to perform with the UNCSA Symphony Orchestra or Wind Ensemble. FREE Ivan Zenaty and Sandra Shapiro, Violin/Piano Duo October 27 (Tue) 7:30 p.m. Watson Hall Internationally acclaimed violinist Ivan Zenaty and pianist Sandra Shapiro, both on the artist faculty of the Cleveland Institute of Music, perform a program of duos by Clara Schumann, Johannes Brahms and Ludwig van Beethoven. This recital is part of their international tour that will conclude in Carnegie Hall this spring. Carmina Burana October 31 (Sat) 7:30 p.m. Stevens Center November 1 (Sun) 3:00 p.m. Stevens Center Joining the massive forces of the Winston Salem Symphony Chorale and the UNCSA Cantata Singers, the UNCSA Symphony Orchestra presents one of the most popular and recognizable pieces: Carl Orff s Carmina Burana Concerto Competition winner Kevin Murphy begins the program with the lovely and lyrical Violin Concerto by Samuel Barber. Music Director Christopher James Lees conducts. SPECIAL EVENT PRICING: $22 Regular/ $20 Student Oboe for an Autumn Evening November 3 (Tue) 7:30 p.m. Watson Hall Merideth Hite, UNCSA's new artist-professor of oboe, performs new and classic works in her debut solo recital in Watson Hall, assisted by Allison Gagnon and other School of Music faculty. Wind Ensemble November 6 (Fri) 7:30 p.m. Stevens Center Come and enjoy an evening with the UNCSA Wind Ensemble. Bassoon professor Saxton Rose performs Dana Wilson s Avatar Concerto. Piano Weekend November 7 (Sat) 10:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Watson Hall and Crawford Hall A long-standing tradition at UNCSA, the Piano Weekend brings together the best young pianists from across North Carolina for a day of classes, performances and a competition. This year Piano Weekend features a master class by the legendary pianist Susan Starr at 4 p.m. in Watson Hall. Registration required. A Conversation with Susan Starr November 7 (Sat) 7:30 p.m. Watson Hall Since winning the Silver Medal at the 1962 Tchaikovsky competition in Moscow, Susan Starr has appeared with every major orchestra in the USA and in concerts around the world. This evening offers a rare opportunity to see a retrospective of Susan Starr's career and engage in a conversation on her life in the arts. FREE

3 Flute and Piano Recital November 10 (Tue) 7:30 p.m. Watson Hall UNCSA artist/flutist Tadeu Coelho and Davidson College s collaborative artist David Gilliland perform works by César Franck and Sergei Prokofiev. Also in the program is Coelho s flute transcription of J.S. Bach s Chaconne in D minor BWV 1004 for solo violin. Coelho takes these violin masterpieces to a new level of artistry and excitement not to be missed. GOOD November (Thur-Sun) Catawba Theatre The Schools of Music and Drama jointly present, Good CP Taylor s 1981 play inventively set with live symphony orchestra. The story surrounds Professor John Halder and the incremental loss of his moral compass during an ambitious ascent through the Nazi Party in 1930s Germany. How do we each justify our actions so that we can believe we, too, are good? Christopher James Lees conducts and Quin Gordon directs. Fire Pink Trio November 17 (Tue) 7:30 p.m. Watson Hall After their tremendously successful release of "Poetry in Motion" CD and concert tour, FIRE PINK TRIO will present an exciting program of new works for flute, viola and harp. Come join Debra Reuter-Pivetta, Sheila Browne and Jacquelyn Bartlett for an evening of great chamber music! Nu Ensemble November 21 (Sat) 7:30 p.m. Watson Hall Hot off the presses, this program brings politically charged beats with a Pulitzer Prize winner s string quartet and premieres of new works by composition students Derek Arnold, Cheyne Runnells, and Dak Van Vranken. Guest soprano Elizabeth Pacheco Rose also sings haunting songs by Irish composer Donate Dennehy. Christopher James Lees & Saxton Rose conduct. Piano Area Recital November 24 (Tue) 7:30 p.m. Watson Hall The piano area presents its best students in concert. UNCSA piano students maintain a busy schedule, and have recently performed at established concert series in Wimington, Fearrington, and Independence, VA, and at numerous venues in the Triad. Featuring works by Beethoven, Chopin, Brahms, Debussy and more. FREE Wind Chamber Music December 12 (Sat) 7:30 p.m. Watson Hall Tadeu Coelho and Allison Gagnon perform gems of the flute and piano chamber repertoire. Guests include UNCSA woodwind faculty, Merideth Hite, new oboe professor, Oskar Espina Ruiz, clarinet, Saxton Rose, bassoon, as well as Maria Serkin, new horn professor, and Brooks Whitehouse, cello. UNCSA Cantata Singers December 13 (Sun) 3:00 p.m. Home Moravian Church The UNCSA Cantata Singers join forces with Magnolia Baroque Players for J. S. Bach s beloved Magnificat. Student soloists will be featured. The program will include other instrumental and choral works of the season. A free will offering will be received. UNCSA Percussion Ensembles December 14 (Mon) 7:30 p.m. Watson Hall Take a break from traditional holiday music to hear the exciting sounds of the UNCSA Percussion Ensembles. You might even hear some jingle bells as John Cage used them. FREE Guitar Area Recital December 17 (Thu) 7:30 p.m. Watson Hall UNCSA Guitar Students play an eclectic mix of music in this popular annual event. FREE

4 Allison Gagnon and Eric Larsen, Piano Duo January 16 (Sat) 7:30 p.m. Watson Hall Pianists Allison Gagnon and Eric Larsen return to the Hamburg Steinways of Watson Hall in paying tribute to Bill Huesman, UNCSA s brilliant and indefatigable piano technician who retires in This program of duo favorites expresses our thanks to Bill, and showcases two prime examples of his expert care. $18 Regular / $15 Students (with valid ID) Joseph Pecoraro in Recital: Two by Two January 19 (Tue) 7:30 p.m. Watson Hall UNCSA Guitar Faculty member Joseph Pecoraro performs a diverse program of works from four centuries-all lined up in pairs! Chrysalis Chamber Music Institute presents Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center January 24 (Sun) 2 p.m. Watson Hall UNCSA's partnership with Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center continues with music by Mozart, Schubert and Mendelssohn performed by Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Artistic Director Wu Han, piano; Benjamin Beilman, Kristin Lee, Sean Lee, violins; alumnus Richard O'Neill, viola; Nicholas Canellakis, cello. SPECIAL EVENT PRICING: $25 Regular/ $20 Student Fantasy and Thievery January 26 (Tue) 7:30 p.m. Watson Hall Often a wallflower at the party, here the bassoon takes center stage with masterworks of Mozart, Biber and Schumann stolen in transcription from the repertoire of its more fortunate friends. Bassoonist Saxton Rose, pianist Allison Gagnon and new oboe faculty Merideth Hite perform a dazzling program of music from the 17th century to today. French Organ Works Masterclass with Jesse Eschbach January 28 (Thu) 7 p.m. Crawford Hall Jesse Eschbach, from the University of North Texas, will present a masterclass on French organ repertoire. Dr. Eschbach, a student of Marie-Claire Alain, Madame Duruflé, and Robert Glasgow, is a specialist in the repertoires of the French Baroque and Romantic/Modern periods. His recordings and scholarship have received critical acclaim worldwide. FREE UNCSA Jazz Ensemble: Symphony in Bossa January 29 (Fri) 7:30 p.m. Freedman Theater The UNCSA Jazz Ensemble presents the duo Minas in a special performance of its recent recording Symphony in Bossa, featuring a string orchestra with the band a first! Both soloists are graduates of UNCSA who will sing and play popular Brazilian standards as well as original compositions. Annual High School Organ Festival & Competition January (Fri-Sun) Crawford Hall & other locations In its fifth year, the annual festival & competition features opportunities for high school organists from across the US to engage in workshops, masterclasses, and competition for potential prizes totaling over $10,000. Participants will also have the opportunity to receive lessons from UNCSA s Kenan Professor of Organ, Timothy Olsen. Mozart Birthday Concert January 30 (Sat) 7:30 p.m. Watson Hall Since 1978, the annual Mozart Birthday Concert has been among the most popular of UNCSA s offerings. UNCSA faculty artists come together in a program of chamber music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in celebration of his 260th birthday. SPECIAL EVENT PRICING: $22 Regular/ $20 Student

5 Amor Brujo Postmoderno January 31 (Sun) 2:00 p.m. DeMille Theatre Famed Spanish designer Agatha Ruiz de la Prada leads a multidisciplinary UNCSA Special Event in collaboration with the Schools of Music, Design and Production, Film and Dance to celebrate the 100 th Anniversary of Manuel de Falla s masterwork, El Amor Brujo, with music curated by Oskar Espina-Ruiz, costumes by Ruiz de la Prada, and original sets, lighting, animation, choreography and dance. A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute: The Italian Straw Hat February 5 (Fri) 7:30 p.m. Stevens Center February 7 (Sun) 2:00 p.m. Stevens Center February 9 (Tue) 7:30 p.m. Stevens Center Music by Nino Rota; Libretto by Ernesta and Nino Rota In Italian, with English supertitles Conductor: Christopher James Lees; Stage Director: Steven LaCosse; Music Preparation: Angela Vanstory Ward From Italian composer Nino Rota (frequent collaborator of Frederico Fellini and winner of the Academy Award for best film score for The Godfather, Part II in 1974), comes a sparkling farce, filled with surprises, zany characters and romance. Beck for an evening of chamber music collaborations with percussion. Performers include new faculty oboist Merideth Hite, UNCSA colleagues, guest artists from the Blue Mountain Ensemble, Giannini Brass Quintet, Forecast Music, and Soprano Lindsay Kesselman. Franco-Belgian February 13 (Sat) 7:30 p.m. Watson Hall The great Franco-Belgian school of violin playing reflects magnificent French and Belgian works that explore the colors and modalities made possible by this approach to the instrument. In this program, violinist Kevin Lawrence joins pianist Dmitri Shteinberg for treasures from this repertoire by Messiaen, Saint-Saëns, Ysaÿe and Franck. UNCSA Symphony Orchestra: The Symphonic Organ March 18 (Fri) 7:30 p.m. Wait Chapel, Wake Forest University Kicking off the UNCSA Symphony Orchestra s tour to Charlotte and Brevard, this performance in historic Wait Chapel features the colorful and beautiful Saint-Saëns Symphony No. 3, Organ Symphony. Also featured will be the virtuoso winner of the 2015 Concerto Competition. UNCSA Symphony Orchestra Musical Director Christopher James Lees conducts. Second Annual Organ Studio B-A-C-H Recital March 20 (Sun) 3 p.m. Crawford Hall Following up on its initial all-bach recital last year, the organ studio of Timothy Olsen will perform works by Johann Sebastian Bach in the keys of B (Bb), A, C, and H (B-natural). Also featured will be works based on the B-A-C-H motive including compositions by Schumann, Liszt, and more. FREE UNCSA Percussion Ensemble April 10 (Sun) 7:30 p.m. Watson Hall The UNCSA Percussion Ensemble, African Drumming Ensemble, and the Wake Forest University Gamelan join forces with other area performers to present music from West and South Africa, Indonesia, and North, Central, and South America. FREE Flute Studio April 12 (Tue) 7:30 p.m. Watson Hall Students of Tadeu Coelho in concert perform solo and chamber works for flute ranging from Baroque to the contemporary. Helmed by UNCSA Symphony Orchestra Music Director Christopher James Lees, and interspersing excerpts from Rimsky- Korsakov s timeless tone poem Scheherazade, this dynamically unique concert is woven together through 1,001 musical nights, and features the best large and chamber ensembles, as well as stunning solo performances from our student-artists.
