1 RICARDO G. FLORES Department of Business Administration Wohlers Hall-1206 S. Sixth Street - Tel. (217) ; Fax (217) rgflores@illinois.edu EDUCATION 2003 Present, Urbana-Champaign IL, USA Ph.D. student Department of Business Administration (Organizational Behavior) Research interests: Strategic adaptation to environmental jolts (i.e., globalization, institutional change, technological discontinuities). Processes of technological evolution. Dissertation: Organizational Responses to Competence-Destroying Technological Discontinuities: The Case of the American College of Radiology (ACR) : A substantial body of research examining organizational responses to competence destroying technological discontinuities (CDTDs) has emerged over the past two decades. Studies have found that incumbent organizations often suffer acute performance decline or even death in the face of CDTDs and have sought to identify organizational factors and processes that mitigate this damage and thus promote successful adaptation. This project seeks to add to this body of research by examining how a distinctive organization (the American College of Radiology) successfully adapted to the emergence of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) imaging, a new technology that threatened the organization s competence and very identity. Through a content analysis of historical records obtained directly from the ACR, I build a process model of organizational adaptation to technological change. The study contributes to the literature both through its explicit focus on the adaptive process, and through its efforts to understand the adaptive responses of a different type of organization (a professional organization rather than the technology producers studied in most prior research). The dissertation also aims to make a secondary contribution to the broader literature on technological evolution. While the study s primary goal is to understand the process of organizational adaptation within the ACR itself, I also examine how its actions and choices have affected the broader field of medical device imaging over the years since NMR technology first emerged , Urbana-Champaign IL, USA MBA (Master in Business Administration-International Finance) Universidad Nacional de Cuyo Mendoza, Argentina B.Sc. in Petroleum Engineering (5-year degree) Summa Cum Laude ACADEMIC HONORS Robert Ferber Award FMC Technologies, Inc., Fellowship Award (Campus-wide competition) Included in the Incomplete Campus wide List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent by their Students.
