(Arabic proverb) NEIGHBOUR R (1992) The Inner Apprentice London; Kluwer Academic Publishers. p.xvii Cross-Agency Priority Goal Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Education: In support of the President s goal that the U.S. have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020, the Federal Government will work with education partners to improve the quality of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education at all levels to help increase the number of well prepared graduates with STEM degrees by one third over the next 10 years, resulting in an additional 1 million graduates with degrees in STEM subjects. (February 2012) 1

2 Between 2008 and 2018, STEM occupations will increase from 5.0% of the total jobs in the U.S to 5.3%, an increase that is equivalent to 1 million jobs. 6 E 2 : Expeditions in Education E 2 activities will integrate STEM education research and development to improve learning in science and engineering disciplines and capitalize on the scientific assets across NSF to bring engaging new evidence based practices, content, knowledge, and real world applications to more learners. This will require disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration among cognitive scientists, STEM education researchers, and disciplinary researchers. Three Focus Areas: Transforming Undergraduate STEM Learning through Science and Engineering Learning and Understanding Sustainability Cyberlearning, Data and Observations of STEM Education Transforming Undergraduate Education in STEM (TUES) Goal: To improve the quality of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education for all undergraduate students 2013 Program Budget: $61.46 million 2013 Solicitation Deadlines: To be determined Widening Implementation and Demonstration of Evidence-based Reforms (WIDER) Goal: To move improved undergraduate STEM education instructional practices and curricular innovations to scale across institutions 2013 Program Budget: $20.0 million 2013 Solicitation deadline: To be Determined 6

7 Math and Science Partnership (MSP) Goal: To improve K 12 achievement in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Ensure all students have access to, are prepared for, and are encouraged to participate and succeed in challenging and advanced STEM courses Enhance the quality, quantity and diversity of the K 12 STEM teacher workforce, and develop innovative evidence based strategies for increasing the achievement of all students and reducing the achievement gap between diverse groups 2013 Program Budget: $57.08 million 2014 Solicitation Deadline: To be Determined Workforce Preparation Advanced Technological Education (ATE) Goal: To produce more qualified science and engineering technicians for the high technology fields that drive the nations economy, with emphasis on 2 year institutions 2013 Program Budget: $64.0 Million FY 2014 Solicitation Deadline: October 17,

8 Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program (NOYCE) Goal: To encourage talented mathematics, science, and engineering undergraduates and STEM professionals to pursue teaching careers as well as prepare Master Teachers 2013 Program Budget: $54.89 Million FY 2013 Solicitation Deadline: March 20, 2013 Cybercorps: Scholarship for Service(SFS) Goals: To increase the number of federal government employees who are skilled in information assurance and cyber security To produce cyber security professionals by increasing the capacity of the United states higher education enterprise 2013 program budget: $25.0 Million FY 2013 Solicitation Deadline: To be Determined Broadening Participation and Institutional Capacity 8

9 STEM Talent Expansion Program (STEP) Goal: To increase the number of students receiving associate or baccalaureate degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields 2013 Program Budget: $16.3 Million 2013 Solicitation Deadline: December 3, 2013 Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM) Goal: To support talented students with demonstrated financial need to enable them to enter the STEM workforce or STEM graduate school by providing scholarships to institutes of higher education 2013 program budget: ~ 44 million (H 1B visa fees) FY 2013 Solicitation Deadline: August 13, 2013 Final Thoughts As a research agency, NSF supports R&D Investment Interests = disciplinary and crossdisciplinary and interdisciplinary best in emerging science, technology, engineering and math and the best in emerging educational research 9
