1 Highlights of the Fall 2007 Survey of Maine Nursing Education Programs Prepared by Susan B. Sepples PhD Director, School of Nursing College of Nursing and Health Professions University of Southern Maine

2 Nursing Programs in Maine Central Maine Community College (CMCC) Central Maine Medical Center (CMCC) Eastern Maine Community College (EMCC) Husson College (HC) Kennebec Valley Community college (KVCC) Northern Maine Community College (NMCC) Saint Joseph s College of Maine (SJC) Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) University of Maine (UM) University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) University of Maine at Fort Kent (UMFK) University of New England (UNE) University of Southern Maine (USM)

3 Increasing Admissions: EMCC s current cap of 32 was increased in 2006 by 8. Husson College increased admissions by 60 students in their regular RN-BS program KVCC increased cap from 32 to 40 with a Department of Labor grant in SMCC admitted 16 students in January 2007 at York Community College as a new satellite site. UM targets a total enrollment in the BS program of 72 students in each year freshmen through senior. This includes freshmen and transfer students. UMA admitted 16 students in January 2007 for a new site at the Hutchinson Center in Belfast. Waldo County Hospital began funding a site in September USM admitted a second cohort into its Accelerated BS program for the second year at its LAC campus

4 New Programs being planned/closed EMCC is phasing out the LPN program and have increased their cap from students for the AND program to include WCCC distance program students St Josephs closed its MSN in Parish Nursing RN/MSN, RN/BSN, programs being phased out at Husson with last student graduating this spring SJC is investigating an on site 5th year MSN to open in 2007 SMCC is looking at the possibility of a program satellite in Brunswick at the Air Station site targeting Fall SMCC increased applications by 16 students this year UMA opened its RN/BS program Husson has closed its Acute Care NP program USM in its second cohort of the Clinical Nurse Leader MS and is accepting admissions for fall A Doctorate of Nursing Practice Program has been approved by the USM graduate counsel and will come before the faculty senate this spring.

5 Number of Full-time Nursing Faculty Teaching in Maine Nursing Programs There are 164 full-time faculty members teaching in Maine nursing programs. The vast majority of these faculty members are women and Caucasian. Reported salaries for nursing faculty range from $40-45K for instructor/assistant professor positions to $58-70K for associate professor to full professor positions.

24 The following data is culled from the final report on the Maine Minimum Data Set Researched and Written by Dr. Jane Kirsching The Maine Minimum Data Set was developed in through a collaborative between: OMNE Nursing Leaders of Maine The Maine State Board of Nursing ANA-Maine The Maine State Nurses Association The Maine Hospital Association.

25 Data Collection Beginning with September 2002 renewals, the Maine State Board of Nursing inserted a survey with all renewal notifications. Nurses, who elected to participate, returned their completed surveys with their license renewal. Staff at the Maine State Board of Nursing collected the completed surveys and forwarded them to the University of Southern Maine (USM) for scanning and analysis. A total of 15,960 licensed nurses, including 1,995 (12.7%) LPNS and 13,714 (87.3%) RNs completed the survey during the two-year renewal period. An estimated 23,000 nurses received renewal notices during the two-year period (estimated response rate 69 percent) According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Human Services Administration (HRSA) it is estimated that there were 2,909,467 registered nurses living and working in the United States as of March 2004.

(97.4%) White 14,750 (93.7%) Female ; 992 (6.3%) Male Respondents had been an LPN or RN ~23.0 years Licensed nurses average age was 49.4 (range 22 to 90 years) LPNs were 52.4 on average, range 23 to 86 RNs were 48.9 on average, range 22 to 90 years. Nationally, the average age of the RN population was estimated to be 46.8 years of age

29 Other critical points Maine nurses work an average 33.7 hours/week 26 of these hours are in direct care Over 50% of all respondents work in hospitals 57% work in direct care 12 percent work in a management role <8% work as APRNs <2% work primarily as educators 83% of RNs working in hospitals and 77% of RNs working in other settings plan to be working in nursing in 5 years 72% of educators plan to be working in 5 years (14% are uncertain)
