9 Methods of instruction Clinical practice for RNSG 1262 occurs in a medical surgical facility and in both inpatient and community mental health facilities. Objectives and clinical practice guidelines are unique for the different areas. Post-conferences are a part of the clinical experience and include discussion and problem-solving sessions. The students are expected to bring assigned materials for post-conference discussion. During the course, students develop concept map care plans and process recordings, provide patient care and practice technical and communication skills under the supervision of the clinical instructor. Specific learning objectives are listed in this syllabus. Grading Summary: CLINICAL ACTIVITIES POINTS Potter & Perry Modules (See schedule) 30 Care Plan (Med-Surg #1) 100 Care Plan (Med-Surg #2) 100 Docucare Daily Sheet-Med-Surg (x 2) 50 Skills checklist (Med-Surg) 50 Simulation Preparation (Med-Surg) 75 Psychosocial Careplan (Mental Health) 100 Docucare Daily Sheet- Mental Health 25 Reflective Journal (50 pts x 2) 100 Medication Jeopardy (Group project) step paper 10 Drug Calculation Test (1 st attempt) 100 Portfolio 10 Clinical Evaluation Tool ** 800 (earned grade x 8) TOTAL COURSE POINTS 1600 ** Student must achieve 600 points (75%) on the Clinical Evaluation Tool to successfully complete course** GRADING SCHEDULE POINTS = A = B = C = D BELOW A total course point grade of 75% (1200 points) or greater must be achieved on clinical work and the final evaluation as a part of the final grade. The final clinical evaluation is worth 800 course points or 50% of the final clinical grade. The student must score 600 points (75%) or higher on the clinical evaluation in order to pass the clinical course. Failure to receive at least 75% (1200 points) overall prevents the student from progressing in the Associate Degree Nursing Program and the student receives a D or F on the transcript for the course. In addition concurrent enrollment in the theory course RNSG 1417 Concepts of Nursing Practice I for Articulating Students is required for this course. If a student needs to repeat RNSG 1262, the student will be required to complete RNSG 1417 at the same time. Even though these are two separate courses, they are related and must be completed together.

10 W...Withdrawal. It is recommended that the student talk to the instructor before withdrawing. Current course withdrawal information can be found in the printed version of the ACC Schedule for this semester or online at ACC Course Withdrawal Instructions. Students who file withdrawal requests by the published deadline and have not exceeded the withdrawal maximum will receive a grade of W. I...Incomplete. No Incompletes or I grades will be given except for extreme circumstances. If an I grade is assigned and the course work is not completed by the pre-arranged time limit, this grade will convert to an F. Dosage Calculation Exam Policy Successful completion of a dosage calculation exam given in RNSG 1262 demonstrating 90% proficiency is a clinical requirement and must be achieved prior to administration of medications in the clinical area. Refer to course calendar for schedule of initial test that will be given during class in RNSG Students may use simple calculators during this test. If a student fails to score 90% on the initial exam, a second exam must be taken. The retake exam date is at the instructor's discretion and will be announced as soon as known. The maximum number of retake exams allowed is three (3). Therefore, the exam can be taken a total of 4 times, including the original, first exam. Review for the exam is the responsibility of each individual student. Those students who are unable to pass the calculation exam with a 90% after all opportunities have been exhausted must withdraw from RNSG 1262 & NOTE: Dosage calculation exam score on the first test will be the recorded grade for the Clinical Coursework portion of this course (worth 100 points). Late Course Work Policy A total of 10% will be deducted for late papers per day. In addition, papers received later than a week from the due date will not be accepted and the grade will be a zero. Classroom Protocol It is the right of each student to participate in his or her learning, and it is the responsibility of each student to not interfere with the learning of other students. It is the expectation of the college that each student assumes the responsibility to follow college policies and procedures governing campus and classroom conduct. This information is published in the ACC Student Handbook: Clinical evaluation Students will have the opportunity to do a self-evaluation, in addition to the instructor s evaluation, so that the student can determine his/her progress. The final clinical evaluation is worth 600 course points or 50% of the final clinical grade. The student must score 600 points (75%) or higher in order to pass the clinical course. If the final evaluation grade is below a 75% the student will not pass clinical, regardless of grades earned on clinical paperwork. A grade of "D" will be recorded for those who score below 75%. Refer to the evaluation tool for specific evaluation criteria. NOTE: At any time during the semester, the instructor may drop any student from the clinical rotation if the student's clinical performance is unsafe. The student will be counseled regarding the unsafe performance, using due process, prior to the final removal. Review the Criteria for Unsafe Clinical Performance, the Clinical Evaluation tool, and the Expected Daily Clinical Behaviors.

11 Attendance Policy CLINICAL ATTENDANCE: Attendance is required for ALL scheduled clinical days, including scheduled simulation days on campus. If ill, students must notify the appropriate hospital area at least 2 hours before the scheduled clinical starting time. The student must also notify their clinical instructor before the clinical day starts. Students who are ill are expected to seek appropriate medical care, and the instructor may request written medical permission before allowing a student to return to clinical in the event of unusual or prolonged illness. (See ADN Student Handbook.) Also, tardiness hampers continuity of patient care. Two clinical tardies will be counted as a clinical absence. A student is tardy when they are not present at the start of the clinical day. Late arrival to the clinical facility of 60 minutes or more will be considered an absence. For any student missing a clinical day, 80 points (5%) will be deducted from the final grade for each absence. With a clinical absence, the student will be assigned a written case study due to the clinical instructor on the next clinical day. This case study will be graded and will have a maximum value of 50 points. Regardless of absences, it is the student s responsibility to complete the course clinical objectives and paperwork. Any student who has more than two (2) clinical absences will be in serious jeopardy of not meeting course objectives and at risk for failure. Students are allowed one 15 minute break and a 30 minute lunch break during the clinical day. The student must report to the Staff Nurse prior to and on returning from break. The Clinical Instructor must be able to find you at any time during the clinical day. Students are also expected to be on time for post-conferences. ACC ACADEMIC SUCCESS AND SUPPORT SERVICES: Americans with Disabilities Act ACC complies with ADA and 504 Federal guidelines by affording equal access to individuals who are seeking an education. Students who have a disability and would like classroom accommodations must register with the Office of Disability Services, A 136, (281) Instructors are not able to provide accommodations until the proper process has been followed.
