1 INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERIZED ACCOUNTING COURSE SYLLABUS Spring 2012 COURSE TITLE: INSTRUCTOR: ACNT Payroll and Business Tax Accounting Vanessa Robison OFFICE LOCATION ATC Campus, Room 111 AND PHONE/ OFFICE HOURS: MW: 9:30-10:00am, MWF: 11:00am- 12:00pm Monday: 1:15pm-1:45pm and 5:00-6:00pm Tuesday and Thursday: 11:00am-12:15pm SOUTH PLAINS COLLEGE IMPROVES EACH STUDENT'S LIFE ************************************************************************ GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION: A. Course Description: This course is a study of payroll procedures, taxing entities, and reporting requirements of local, state, and federal taxing authorities in a manual and computerized environment. Course Learning Outcomes: The student will develop personnel and payroll records that provide the information required under current laws and process payroll data and tax data and prepare reports. Course Competencies: Grades are based on homework assignments, class work assignments, major tests, and practice set. A minimum grade of D is required to pass ACNT Academic Integrity: It is the aim of the faculty of South Plains College to foster a spirit of complete honesty and a high standard of integrity. The attempt of any student to present as his or her own any work which he or she has not honestly performed is regarded by the faculty and administration as a most serious offense and renders the offender liable to serious consequences, possibly suspension. Cheating: Dishonesty of any kind on examinations or on written assignments, illegal possession of examinations, the use of unauthorized notes during an examination, obtaining information during an examination from the textbook or from the examination paper of another student, assisting others to cheat, alteration of grade records, illegal entry or unauthorized presence in an office are examples of cheating. Complete honesty is required of the student in the presentation
2 of any and all phases of course work. This applies to quizzes of whatever length as well as to final examinations, to daily reports and to term papers. Dishonesty in any form in this class will result in immediate dismissal and an F as the final grade. The Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) was appointed by the Secretary of Labor to determine the skills that young people need to succeed in the world of work. The purpose is to encourage a high-performance economy characterized by high-skill, high-wage employment. Eleven skill areas were identified by the Commission. The Foundation Skills involve reading, writing, and mathematics. The other eight areas refer to workplace skills, such as working with clients and co-workers. POFT 2312 identifies the following: Foundation Skills: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 Workplace Skills: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 15, 16, 19 Verification of Workplace Competencies: This course will provide practical experience involving payroll procedures, taxing entities, and reporting requirements of local, state, and federal taxing authorities in a manual and computerized environment. This course assimilates information/skills from other courses in the Accounting Associate program, which includes ACCT 2288 as a capstone experience. II. SPECIFIC COURSE/ INSTRUCTOR REQUIREMENTS Textbook and other materials: Payroll Accounting, Bieg and Toland, 2012 Edition, with Cengage NOW access code. You will need a basic calculator for homework assignments/in class work, tests, etc. You will also need access to a computer either at home, or in an SPC computer lab. Attendance Policy: Attendance is a part of your grade. Therefore, if you are here, you are helping your grade significantly. Attendance also is a vital component in your overall learning experience. If you do not attend class, you will be hurting your grade and missing important discussions. Excessive absences will cause you to be dropped automatically from the course. Part of the attendance grade will also include possible collection of daily assignments. No make-up daily assignments will be accepted. Examination Policy: Students will be required to complete tests over all aspects of payroll accounting in a manual and computerized environment... Students should make every effort to be present on exam days since NO MAKE-UP EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN; however, the lowest test grade of the semester will be dropped to allow for one absence.
3 Grading Policy/Procedure and/or Methods of Evaluation: The student s final grade will be derived from the following scale: Grading Scale- A = B = C = D = F = Under 60 Attendance and Assignments 30% Payroll Project Short Version 20% Exams 50% Special Requirements: Cell phones must be turned off during class. Food or drinks will be allowed in designated areas only and not permitted in the computer labs. Illegal use of any computer equipment or software is against the law and strictly prohibited. Any student at SPC who violates policy in this area will lose all privileges of using any computer lab.
