Understanding our key markets It is important to have a good understanding of our core target markets and the key performance indicators (KPIs) for each sector when developing your solution. Only when a solution meets the KPI s of the sector and the end-user do we really have a valuable solution to take to market. Below is a brief overview of the sectors we target. For more details on each sector visit Inmarsat s Enterprise business unit addresses a broad range of market sectors including: > Media > Resources (oil & gas, mining and utilities) > Aid & NGO > Transport and logistics > Banking and finance > Agriculture > Environmental monitoring > Machine-to-Machine (M2M) 8.1 Media sector Inmarsat has a longstanding relationship with the media sector, which dates back to the early 1990s. It is no exaggeration to say that Inmarsat has changed the way that audiences experience the world by providing journalists with the ability to report live from the front line, wherever that may be. Initially this was restricted to audio but as improved encoders became available, it became possible to transmit still and then moving video. This process culminated in the launch of BGAN in 2005, which for the first time provided global broadband connectivity. Some of the key images of the past 10 years have been delivered by BGAN and with the launch of a higher speed streaming service at the end of 2013 (BGAN HDR with a QoS of 580kbps) has sharply increased the quality of video. Furthermore, bonding two terminals together means that a throughput of up to 1.5Mbps 9 Enterprise CAP Programme Overview inmarsat.com
can be obtained, ie. the equivalent of a low end VSAT. Inmarsat has a track record of constant innovation, which means it remains a key part of the toolkit of the world s leading broadcasters Media key trends Journalists used to work to specific deadlines throughout the day to meet the requirements of specific bulletins. The introduction of 24-hour news and consumption of content on mobile devices means that they now face a rolling deadline. A journalist covering a story might begin by sending a Tweet and a still picture or a short burst of video. A short piece to camera and some additional video and copy might follow this. The studio presenter might then interview the journalist. Only then would they begin thinking about a traditional report and in some cases they might never do that. All the time, the person in the field needs to be connected to the information available through their newsroom computer system and on the wider web. A journalist cut off from this network cannot hope to be competitive. Inmarsat s constant innovation by adding new capabilities to its network opens the door for creative application and solution developers to meet the needs of media broadcasters and newsgathering today Media sector - KPIs > To constantly seek new ways of improving the delivery of news through new technologies > Combining financial and non-financial measures to better understand the performance and ratings of news bulletins 8.2 Aid & NGO For more than a decade Inmarsat has been delivering voice and data communications to the Aid and NGO sector throughout the life cycle of an emergency situation Emergency response and relief When disaster strikes and terrestrial networks go down, Aid & NGO organisations rely on Inmarsat to communicate. With Inmarsat s voice and always-available broadband data services, they can restore essential connectivity independently of local networks, enabling humanitarian teams to coordinate a rapid and effective first response to disasters. Inmarsat enables first responders to be on the phone with fresh updates as soon as they arrive, streaming live video of the disaster scene, sending real-time data on the rescue operations and connecting with other aid agencies to co-ordinate crisis relief Disaster relief Following the initial response, when the focus shifts to meeting survivors basic needs, Inmarsat s BGAN service helps ensure they get aid to where it's needed most. Field workers can set up a mobile broadband office with the same BGAN service they used on arrival to coordinate relief efforts and exchange information with their HQs. 10 Enterprise CAP Programme Overview inmarsat.com
8.2.3 Sustainable development Agencies helping to facilitate longer-term development can use BGAN to give field teams access to project management tools and other corporate applications. Inmarsat services can also enable the establishment of community services, such as remote healthcare and education Post-disaster reconstruction As the situation improves and Aid teams move into reconstruction mode, BGAN and IsatPhone Pro continue to provide essential connectivity for managing multiple development projects and for staying in touch when field workers travel to remote areas Aid & NGO KPIs Greater cost-effectiveness > Low bandwidth consumption > Control of excessive usage Ease of use a key requirement > Usability by untrained personnel > Plug and play capability Healthcare & education KPIs Ease of use a key requirement > Teachers or medical workers with no digital literacy skills > Online support Low bandwidth requirement > Enabling more users simultaneously > Caching on local server > Connecting for updates/ uploading assignments or patient records Improving quality of medical service provision > Enabling access to expertise > Sharing of medical and patient information > Building capacity Improving quality of education > Building capacity > Teacher support material, e.g. course plans > Full visibility on student s online activities (tracking, reporting,) > Enabling group discussions / chatting, sharing apps and documents 11 Enterprise CAP Programme Overview inmarsat.com
8.3 Resources Inmarsat offers a compelling combination of services to the resources sector (oil & gas, mining and utilities), whether an oil & gas site in the Gulf of Mexico, a mine in Africa, or a smart grid in Asia, Inmarsat offer instant, remote voice and high-speed data using portable, lightweight terminals that are quick to set up and easy to use. Inmarsat brings real-time office connectivity to remote locations. So the mobile field force can start working immediately, sending test data, images and video from site to base for analysis, helping to reduce decision time. Applications enabled by Inmarsat s products and services for resources sectors are: > VoIP > Video conferencing > Streaming, collaboration and data management > Enterprise applications (e.g. SAP, Citrix, ) > FTP > High-speed broadband internet access and video chat > VPN access > Video surveillance > Telemedicine > Crew Welfare > Prepay Resources key trends While oil, gas and other hydrocarbons continue as mainstays of the world s energy market, all are becoming increasingly difficult and expensive to exploit as many of the world s proven, untapped reserves lie in remote and inaccessible regions. Despite the growing popularity of alternative energy sources, demand for crude oil and natural gas has never been greater and whether onshore or offshore, new field developments bring their own set of challenges and, equally, opportunities. The lack of infrastructure at new ventures introduces difficulties with terrain, climate and communications. This can often lead to delays, putting pressure on budgets and schedules. Being first on the scene and requiring no specialist training to setup, Inmarsat s voice and data communications services are widely deployed in this sector. There is a growing demand in resources sectors for remote management. In today s digital field operations, resources companies expect to be able to manage their sites in real-time, to enable faster decision making, increased efficiencies, reduced cost, and enhanced security of staff. 12 Enterprise CAP Programme Overview inmarsat.com
8.3.2 Resources KPIs > Rapid deployment, minimising down time 8.4 > Asset protection keeping insurance premiums low > Meeting HS&E targets to minimise incidents > Remote management to track and monitor fixed and mobile assets for faster decision making, increased efficiency and reduced cost > Reducing downtime of SCADA networks > Increase crew morale through elearning, entertainment and prepay Internet access. Machine-to-Machine (M2M) The demand for satellite M2M is growing as organisations seek better visibility and control over remote assets. Inmarsat extends the reach of remote management applications such as those that monitor sensors on pipelines, power grids and weather stations. Inmarsat s hybrid satellite-cellular solutions ensure constant visibility of assets on the move, including shipping containers and the trains or trucks that move them. Services such as BGAN M2M enable critical infrastructure to be monitored and controlled, protecting vital services such as power lines, wind turbines and railway tracks. Inmarsat M2M deployment is quite diverse, ranging from rural ATMs, environment monitoring, oil and gas pipeline monitoring, transport, asset tracking, utilities and automation. Inmarsat offers two main M2M services: BGAN M2M and IsatData Pro. Between them they enable a range of capabilities, from basic data collection to full IP networking. Both services are accessed through terminals designed for long-term, unmanned deployment in remote locations and offer high availability in all weather. Machine-to-machine (M2M) services are expanding rapidly worldwide, driven by the need for efficient monitoring, control and data acquisition across industries of all kinds. Many M2M services rely on cellular networks, but this can be limited - especially in remote or hard-to-reach areas. The growth in M2M application requirements such as environmental monitoring, fleet management, Smart Grid systems and healthcare monitoring have placed Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) under increasing pressure to provide reliable solutions that meet these needs. There are number of factors driving growth within M2M: Network accessibility The possibility of connecting anything from anywhere brings new scenarios and exciting prospects. Impact on core business processes 13 Enterprise CAP Programme Overview inmarsat.com
Companies across industries are investing in this initiative because it is tightly integrated with improving the efficiency of their core business processes and hence they can directly realise business benefits. Affordability Prices of end devices, platforms and connectivity costs have all declined in recent times. As these continue to drop, M2M solutions will become more mainstream and established. Regulatory and compliance needs Country and region specific regulatory environments are expediting M2M adoption rates. For example, smart meter/ smart home adoption is being driven by green initiatives and monitoring of driving patterns is being driven by the Insurance industry in developed countries. Inmarsat offers a single point of contact for organisations seeking to implement M2M applications in any region, on any scale. Delivered via our I-4 satellite network, our M2M services - BGAN M2M and IsatData Pro - are global, meaning that our customers can plug any gaps in local coverage as well as extending their international service offerings. Reliable coverage on cost-effective terminals means that Inmarsat M2M solutions are worthwhile compared to GSM roaming data tariffs, offering global coverage with data aggregation plans. Inmarsat also provides tailored pricing solutions optimised for the needs of M2M market M2M KPIs 8.5 > High reliability and robustness maximum uptime > Improving efficiency of core business processes > Scalable solutions to support project expansion > Device management for big data analysis Transport & logistics Inmarsat has been serving the transportation sector for a decade with Voice, M2M and Broadband solutions. Increasing costs and tight profit margins within the sector have been key drivers for aiming towards operational efficiencies. Vehicle connectivity has proven to play a major role in achieving lower cost of operations and can be seen as an enabler of efficiency gains. Real time communication allows drivers, warehouses, dispatch control and customers to receive access to the latest information about hold-ups and other problems en-route. This also facilitates a quick response to emergencies, such as calling out a mechanic, sending additional documents for customs control, or re-routing a nearby driver. Inmarsat services provide highly reliable connectivity in every environment to allow control over an entire fleet, ranging from rail cars in Africa transporting ore from the mines, or trucks carrying high value goods through the Amazon, to a fleet of vehicles maintaining infrastructure in central China. Inmarsat is currently at the forefront of innovation and is actively entering into partnerships with system integrators and application developers to enable customers to drive more business in a cost effective manner. 14 Enterprise CAP Programme Overview inmarsat.com
8.5.1 Transportation key trends The days in which truck drivers were sent away from the warehouse with a paper sheet of addresses and a fixed order of goods to pick up and deliver are long gone. Trends leading to achieving supply chain efficiencies such as reduced stock levels, just-in-time production and vendor-managed inventory strategies call for a high degree of flexibility to reduce waste and minimise inefficiencies. A sector being driven by cost competitiveness requires reliable means of communications with key supply chain members to streamline operations. Inmarsat has a strong interest in making satellite connectivity available to a wider market and offers value to transportation companies operating in demanding supply chains Transportation KPIs Increase capacity 9. > More freight, more passengers Reduce carbon > Keep fuel consumption down Lower the cost of operations > Lower running, maintenance costs Improve customer satisfaction > Reduce delays, faster delivery, improve flow of information Inmarsat network overview Inmarsat has been in operation since 1979 and is the preeminent L-band mobile satellite operator in the world serving Land, Maritime and Aviation markets.
