4 International MBA Programme Overview ALBERTO CASTRO Programme Director It is a conventionally acknowledged notion that the competitiveness of Portuguese firms is particularly shaped by the context in which they operate, small size and poorly qualified staff. These, however, are all external factors in some way, as if what happens in a firms own backyard, namely the quality of its management, were of no consequence! A number of recent studies have shown that there is a strong correlation between quality management and the level of development achieved by the different countries. Portugal does not look good in the picture. We were conscious of it as regards development and we are becoming increasingly aware of it on the subject of management. This MBA s ultimate goal is to make a contribution, however small, to change this state of affairs by offering top-level education and training to a selected group of young executives without ever losing sight of two other priorities: SMEs and North and Centre, which are, after all, two realities that cannot be separated from one another. Small size (or, from another angle, family business) does not have to be a stigma for a business. Even if small businesses are the ones that experience the most problems with regard to management, there are many good examples around and they are the cases that we should really focus on: how they are organised, their successes, their mistakes, their practices, how they address challenges and opportunities. We offer training and teaching methods well-anchored into reality led by a prestigious, highly- -qualified and experienced teaching team that is able to reconcile empirical data and cases with the latest theoretical developments in the different areas that are relevant to management. Our teaching methods are in line with the best practices of top-level international business schools, which led the International MBA programme, its methods and content, to be accredited by AMBA. Ours is a type of teaching that takes the word «international» to a new dimension with the international weeks in Spain and China. The International MBA presented here is a programme that has been tested for many years. It benefits from the involvement of AEP, the Portuguese chamber of commerce and industry, which has helped to establish its reputation in the business world. Time and, most importantly, the way the students who have successfully completed the programme have been welcomed in the business world tell us that, whoever decides to take it on, can rest assured that they have made a good investment. In education and training, as well as in management, quality pays off!

International MBA 5 The School A place to share different experiences and cultures 1992 Founded in 2002, Católica Porto Business School results from the merger of two MBA programmes delivered at IEP, in partnership with ESADE- -Business School, and the Catholic University. With a history that goes back to 1992, the school relies on the reputation of the Catholic University and on the representativeness of AEP, the largest Business Association in the country. In an increasingly globalised world, Católica Porto Business School seeks to position itself in the Lusophone market through innovation and academic excellence in executive education, based on an integrated approach that promotes the sharing of technical knowledge and the development of personal skills. Católica Porto Business School s programme portfolio include two MBAs, executive education programmes in various fields of activity (Management, Marketing, Operations Management, Human Capital and Leadership, Finance and Taxation), sectoral training and in-company training based on fully customised programmes that meet the needs and the goals of firms and of their professionals. 6 6 International MBA Why choose the International MBA? Because the programme is a partnership that was born out of a relationship between Católica Porto Business School, AEP, the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and ESADE Business School; Because it is a truly international programme fostered by the study weeks in Spain e China; Because it is a programme designed for executives, which enables them to build a wide network of contacts: personal, business and references; Because it encourages the development of new career-development skills, both nationally and internationally; Because it is a programme in which students get to develop a range of different skills in a classroom environment and in mentoring sessions; Because it is a programme in which students can balance their work with their personal and academic lives.

International MBA hours 320 hours WELCOME AND HOMOGENISATION PERIOD COMPULSORY CORE COURSES Welcome and Homogenisation period In the context of the International MBA, the welcome period is a critical and often decisive moment that can have a significant influence on the whole programme. Católica Porto Business School takes special care to make sure that this period goes forward smoothly and sets clearly defined targets: welcome, introduction and integration of Students in the School and in the programme s ambitions. The homogenisation period is intended to equip the participants from different educational and professional backgrounds with a set of concepts and techniques that make up a common denominator deemed essential to gain learning in Management: Accounting Fundamentals Economics Fundamentals Basic Management Tools Mandatory Courses The International MBA s study plan comprises 320 hours of compulsory core courses distributed as follows: Organisational Behaviour Management Accounting Financial Accounting Management Control Business Law Business Economics Statistics for Managers Corporate Strategy Corporate Finance Operations Management Innovation and Entrepreneurship Marketing Financial Modelling Business Plan Business Simulation Game

This is where discussion sessions become important. The seminars will involve the participation of renowned guests who will share their views and their experience on contemporary topics directly or indirectly related to management. In compliance with the programme s humanitarian spirit, the seminars will focus on social, political, scientific and technological subjects, presented by guest speakers and followed by a debate. At the end of the seminar cycle, students will be able to link the topics addressed to their learning throughout the programme. * Course availability depends on timetable clashes and on a minimum number of students registered.

International MBA hours 40 hours INTERNATIONAL WEEK IN CHINA INTERNATIONAL WEEK IN BARCELONA International Weeks University of Saint Joseph Macau During their international week in China, International MBA students will attend a number of workshops on the Chinese social and economic reality, held at the University of Saint Joseph, in Macau. In addition to the workshops, students will also visit local firms and institutions. The week will include a visit to Hong Kong to see up close the economic reality of China, a country which has become a focus of interest from the viewpoint of business expansion. ESADE - Barcelona The week in Barcelona places emphasis on the firm s overall situation. The aim is to provide students with an interactive experience that incorporates the most relevant concepts of Strategic Management in a business simulation game. The activity is monitored by ESADE s teaching team, which will coach students and will help them to look at the different business options from a strategic standpoint. To this end, and in accordance with the rules of one of the most widespread computer simulation programmes in the major international Business Schools, students will be challenged to take part in a virtual management game where they will practise decision- -making while managing a firm set in a global context. During this interactive experience of strategic simulation each player will call on the most advanced management concepts to take decisions in fields as diverse as finance, marketing, production, human resources involving different firms with a range of products and geographical interests that do not always coincide but that compete against each other.

18 International MBA 70 hours 10 hours SKILLS PORTFOLIO MASTER CLASS Skills Portfolio Managers stand out more and more by their ability to expand their sensitive side with the help of topics that are complementary to a more technical dimension the so-called soft skills and to look at their progress and at their personal and professional goals from a critical standpoint. Under the Soft Skills portfolio, Dynargie takes up this double challenge in a 49-hour course, using varied methodologies and working in plenary sessions and in smaller groups. The following topics are addressed: PARCERIA Presentation Skills Personnel Management Emotional Intelligence Negotiation Problem-Solving and Decision-Making Managing Change At the end of these modules, students get to test the knowledge and the tools acquired in an integrated way in a competition called Soft Skills Simulator Mood Explosion. Their challenge is to manage a seven-people team and assess results with the help of three indicators: team performance, team motivation and respect for budget. Master Class General & Global Management In a global world, it is not necessary to be a multinational firm to be a global firm. The staff of the managerial staff and the skills of each manager you skills, ultimately are what really matters. A manager s contribution always comprises purpose and synthesis. Just like this seminar. Its purpose is to throw light on general and global management. General management, because what s at stake here is the higher result of the whole firm; in other words, it is about achieving a collective performance that is superior to what would normally happen within the firm s context. Global management, because the firm s context is understood as the whole world, as the joining of different but interdependent national contexts. The manager is thus faced with the biggest possible challenge. We will learn how the manager synthesizes context, strategy and organization, how his actions are a synthesis of rationality, policy and culture. In his actions he combines the leader, the entrepreneur and the director. We will see how he tries to understand and cooperate with other distant and different managers. How he uses the world as a source of innovation. How he makes the world of so many into a better world. JOSÉ FERNANDO PINTO DOS SANTOS Visiting Full Professor at Católica Porto Business School and Professor of Practice at INSEAD The programme also includes a subgroup Mentoring programme, which begins with a profile analysis of each student and continues with personalised sessions conducted by a specialised consultant for the duration of the MBA.

International MBA hours SEMINAR ON ETHICS AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND SEMINAR ON ECONOMICS AND GEOPOLITICS Seminars on Ethics and Social Responsibility Sustainable development Social Responsibility Corporate governance Business ethics The concern of the business world for the environment and for social responsibility has become increasingly relevant. However, in line with what is advocated by Michael Porter, sustainability must be seen as a factor that «increases domestic competition» and even as a strategic business opportunity. In this context, these seminars will be a space for joint reflection, debate and testimonials on the multiple business-world concepts and approaches to sustainable development, namely by advertising the best practices to manage and communicate social responsibility. Seminars on Economics and Geopolitics These seminars will address issues that focus on globalisation and on the evolution of the international system, Power and international and regional powers, the global media system, energy, multilateralism, etc. A variety of cases will also be reviewed, the majority of which will pay particular attention to a specific region or country (South America, Africa, etc.) and will not be necessarily generic again, a topical appraisal can be selected for each case. Renowned experts may also be asked to present the guidelines of a certain topic. The aim is to encourage reflection and, through it, develop students ability to grasp the fundamental concepts of geopolitics and use them to interpret some of the major regional and global economic issues. Students will therefore be equipped with an analytical tool that will enable them to take part in decision- -making processes in their professional contexts.

20 International MBA The MBA programme seen by the Teaching Team The programme is taught by lecturers and researchers with worldwide academic reputation and a close and ongoing link to the business world. Approximately 50% of the programme s faculty is composed by Portuguese and foreign visiting scholars. As a teacher at ESADE and as a visiting professor at the Catholic University of Portugal and at many American and European higher education institutions I am happy to confirm the excellence of the International MBA. This excellence has been recognised over the years by the programme s high standards, by the high quality of its faculty and by a strong entrepreneurial orientation that seeks to address a growing need for the professional development of managers of great vision. JOAN MASSONS Foreign Visiting Professor Accounting Fundamentals It is an enormous privilege to participate in the education process of committed, competent and persevering executives: we learn and enjoy opportunities for personal and professional development. This is how I feel about the International MBA, which is conducted in a climate of mutual respect, hard work, humbleness and appreciation for competence. Organisations are not just mere stages to display technicality they are, above all, social spaces where people build better lives for themselves and for others. The International MBA has lived up to this task. ARMÉNIO REGO Visiting Professor Organisational Behaviour We live in a time when computers are no longer technology, when we all need to multitask, when there s near-zero tolerance to noncompliance, when doing is more important than knowing and, most importantly, when reality is no longer real... This awareness lets us know how highly demanding the challenge of education and training is. However, we believe in continuous learning. In this respect, the International MBA is a multifaceted programme based on a carefully designed curriculum, a carefully selected faculty and teaching methods; it is a tailor made programme because it offers individual coaching and a number of elective courses; it is an international programme thanks to the investment in international weeks in Brazil and Spain; and it is a programme that provides a unique experience that translates into a close relationship between students and the school and between students, who build a lifelong alumni network. ANA CÔRTE-REAL Professor at Catholic University of Portugal Marketing

International MBA 21 The MBA programme seen by Alumni All those wishing to pursue the International MBA are special people. They are people who feel that they can play a major role in creating a better future. When the programme started, the country was going through a time of great economic difficulty. We soon understood that all of us should do our bit and be part of the solution, so we were always partners with the School in the search for better solutions. We are proud of what we have achieved. The great diversity of backgrounds, experiences and ages of an Iberian class, paired with a sense of competition with history supported by exemplary teamwork caused our participation to be an overall success. We all learned a great deal from each other, and more than a network of contacts, we have all become a family. We all learned a great deal from our masters. The faculty, national or foreign, with its solid and recognised academic background and experience in the business world made a difference by focusing on the transfer of a solid knowledge base to the detriment of sheer revenue. All this was supported by a great amount of coursework, individual and as a group, completed, many of which with immediate application to the real-world setting of some of us. A long-distance race, accomplished with much effort, but which led to victory in the end! These are the tests that make us stronger. PEDRO MARQUES Year 13/14 EDP Distribuição Deputy Director The impetus of my decision to pursue the International MBA at Católica Porto Business School was enhancing my skills and expertise in Management. I have fully achieved my goal. Today, I feel I am better prepared to face new professional challenges in the future. The experience gained from the trips to São Paulo and Barcelona has made the MBA s final result even richer. It was definitely a good investment! VICTÓRIA MACHADO Year 12/13 Investmotor Importação Automóvel, Lda Chief Financial Officer The Católica Porto Business School s International MBA was a great experience, lived in a wonderful atmosphere, amongst teachers, students and the School s staff. The motivating learning experience and the highly-experienced faculty, academically and professionally, was a source of rigour and strictness, but also of sharing and inspiration based on dialogue and on the exchange of ideas. The programme helped me to complement my expertise in finance, accounting, marketing and operations and to put it together into a coherent whole, filling in gaps and awakening innovativeness, an increasingly important element to face the daily challenges of international business management. I would also like to highlight the international weeks, the partnership with Dynargie and the activities set up by the school, very carefully planned and highly appreciated by everyone. JORGE ROCHA Year 11/12 Grupo Valmet Finance and Administration Manager

22 International MBA Profile of future leaders The International MBA students are a relatively homogeneous group with regard to years of working experience and level of managerial responsibility, but rather heterogeneous in their educational background and professional experiences. This interaction ensures a dynamic and global learning in which the faculty and the managerial staff of different firms share their experiences and knowledge on the best management practices. The typical International MBA student is on average 34 years old and has 10 years of career experience. Gender Age 8% Aged % Male 22% Female 40% Aged % Aged % Aged % Over 45 Educational Background Area of Activity 41% Engineering 34% Industry 13% Economics 18% Services 13% Management 11% Building 6% Psychology/Sociology 6% Consulting 9% Law 15% Insurance and Banking 18% Other 16% Other
