At the beginning of the programme, students are assigned to a study team of four to six people, each with a different set of strengths and expertise. 8 Building a strong foundation through core courses Core courses are taught in intensive four or five-day blocks during the first three terms. Core courses are primarily delivered in Hong Kong, but there are two class weeks in London, two in New York, and one in Shanghai. Each of the three schools makes an equal contribution to the teaching of the core courses, with faculty traveling to teach wherever the class is in residence. All teaching is delivered in English. Capital Markets and Investments introduces the principles of asset valuation from an applied perspective. Students examine current events in global markets and explore equity, fixed income and derivative markets. Corporate Finance provides the tools necessary to value a company by projecting its free cash flow and discounting it at an appropriate rate. Key areas of finance include pro-forma projections, ratio analysis, debt and valuations. Decision Models is an introduction to computer-based models and their use in structuring information and supporting managerial decisions. Students examine linear and non-linear programming, multi-period planning models under uncertainty, and Monte Carlo simulations. Executive Leadership improves self-awareness and interpersonal and team-work skills. It employs experiential exercises and self-assessment instruments. Financial Accounting provides an understanding of accounting principles, concepts, mechanics, and a perspective upon which intelligent use of accounting information rests. There is a focus on financial statements and how they are produced and used. Global Economic Environment explores the fundamentals of national competitiveness, productivity and growth. Students look at the forces that determine production, consumption, savings and investment, and the problem of variable foreign exchange rates and their impact. Leadership and Organisational Change offers practical tools to improve students ability to negotiate, influence others and lead changes in global organisations. Managerial Accounting focuses on the relevance and use of accounting information for management decision making, and presents alternative tools for planning, control and evaluation of a company s operations and resources. Managerial Economics explores business decision making through the extensive use of business cases. Using game theory, students look at basic supply/demand theory and marginal analysis, the structure of decision problems, the impact of the market setting and strategic interactions among firms. Managerial Negotiations imparts two kinds of knowledge: a framework for analysing conflict and the art of controlling one s own behaviour to elicit a desired reaction. Students interpret situations, plan tactics and recognise common ploys. It also equips students with the tactics and techniques to accomplish negotiation goals. Managerial Statistics introduces basic concepts in probability and statistics relevant to managerial decision making. Topics include data analysis, random variables and probability distributions, sampling distributions, interval estimation, hypothesis testing and regression. Marketing Strategy examines the role of marketing in creating value for customers that, in turn, leads to the creation of value for other firm stakeholders. The course deals with core marketing issues by providing a way of thinking strategically about the firm s products, services and markets. Operations Management provides an understanding of manufacturing and service operations. Topics include process-flow analysis, inventory management, capacity planning, facilities location, total quality management, HR management, technology management, and manufacturing and service strategy. Strategic Management develops students ability to analyse and manage business problems from different managerial perspectives. It provides concepts and frameworks to guide strategic decision making and the implementation of business strategies.

9 Adding breath through electives The opportunity to learn from such an experienced and diverse group of peers was a huge benefit. I transitioned my role in the company to focus more on finance. Learning from classmates who were already well established in the finance industry and who had a wealth of practical knowledge was invaluable. Students have access to the elective courses of all three schools in a variety of formats, so each student can customise the programme to his or her individual needs. Electives Electives are offered during terms four and five. Students can decide when and where they take electives from a wide selection of courses. Electives are taught in various locations and showcase some of the faculties latest thinking. Electives offer students the opportunity to deeply explore a subject or expand learning in a new area. International assignment/seminar Students are required to take eight electives, with one being an international seminar or assignment. Groups are formed with students from London and Columbia Business School s other EMBA programmes. Students work within or visit organisations, meeting with senior industry leaders as well as connecting with the the alumni networks in these locations. Recent faculty-led international assignments and seminars have taken place in South Africa, Russian Federation, India, China, Germany, and Brazil. Independent research (optional) Individual students, or a team of up to four, can choose to work with a faculty member on an independent research project focusing on consulting work, business planning or research. Projects call for analysing and resolving complex business problems using the business skills, frameworks and tools acquired through the programme.
