1 Early Childhood Graduate Level Endorsement Program A minimum of 16 hours is required to meet TEAL 6260 the Early Childhood Endorsement guidelines of the Utah State Office of Education. This endorsement is added to a basic state license in elementary education. Individuals entering the endorsement program must already hold an elementary education teaching license. Completion of the program allows licensed elementary teachers to teach at the kindergarten level. Courses are available during regular and summer semesters and include an applied early childhood practicum in approved settings. Early Childhood Master s Degree Emphasis The 16 credits of Early Childhood courses as outlined here may be used as an emphasis area in the various master s programs offered in the program of Elementary Education, School of Teacher Education and Leadership (TEAL). The Master of Education (M.Ed.), Master of Arts (M.A.), and Master of Science (M.S.) degrees are offered. The courses may be used as part of the required courses, professional options and/or supporting coursework in the various programs. Individuals interested in this option must apply for formal admission to the Utah State University School of Graduate Studies. This application is only for those who currently hold a Utah Educators License with an Elementary (Grades 1-8) License Area in the State of Utah who wish to be licensed to teach kindergarten. When the requirements are completed, the applicant will be awarded an Early Childhood (Grades K-3) License Area, thus qualifying her/him to teach Kindergarten in Utah. 2. This process is NOT under the Alternative Routes to Licensure (ARL) Program. The application is submitted to the Educator Licensing office (see page 2) where it is logged and sent to the Early Childhood Specialist for review and approval. 3. No SAEP is available for the K-3 License Area. Teachers with an Elementary (Grades 1-8) License Area may teach Kindergarten without the K-3 license only with a Letter of Authorization. University and Professional Development Courses Approved By USOE 1. Courses must be three semester hours, and less than 10 years old. Dixie State has two semester hour courses that are acceptable. 2. University courses may be undergraduate or graduate from an accredited college or university. No introductory courses will be accepted. 3. Professional development courses (e.g. those offered by NUCC, CITES, SUTEC, etc.) must be preapproved by USOE and entered in OnTrack. 4. Online courses from accredited institutions are accepted. 3 IMPORTANT INFORMATION PLEASE READ If a class is listed in two requirement areas, the class may be taken for only one requirement, not both. Some of the institutions offer an online option for the listed classes. Online availability may vary. Please contact the institution of your choice for current class offerings and schedules. While most of the listed courses are offered through Education departments, some classes might be offered through Family, Children, and Human Studies departments, or Continuing Education. Please contact the college or university of your choice for class availability. The courses listed are classes that may be taken individually. While all of the listed institutions have a full degree program available, the following institutions require enrollment in their degree program and do not have an option to take classes individually: Brigham Young University, Western Governor s University, and Westminster. Instructions for Completing the Application For the Praxis requirement, attach a copy of the Praxis report showing your passing score. For university courses, attach original transcripts (internet transcripts are not acceptable), with the courses highlighted. In some cases, the university course name on the transcript is non-specific, e.g. Special Topics in Education, or Language Arts. If this is the case, submit either a syllabus from the course or a letter from the instructor or department verifying that the course meets the requirement. For professional development courses, attach verification of completed coursework (e.g., a copy of the OnTrack report), with the courses highlighted. Record the courses you have completed on the following pages that fulfill the K-3 License requirements. Submitting the Application 1. Print and complete this application 2.
