3 WHO IS A POTENTIAL GRADUATE? A grade 12 student Have a minimum of 75 credits as of September 1 st Have a passing mark in Gr. 11 English and Gr. 11 Social Studies Those who don t meet these requirements must meet with a counselor in Student Services to develop an education plan

4 COMMENCEMENT LIST In semester 2, students who demonstrate they have the classes and credits in place to attain a HS diploma will be added to the commencement list. It is the student s responsibility to declare his or her intent to participate in commencement. Students can be removed from the list at any time if they don t meet the requirements.

5 GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Total of 100 credits, which must include the following: Grade 12 English ENG 30-1 or 30-2 Grade 12 Social SS 30-1 or 30-2 Grade 11 Math Math 20-1, 20-2 or 20-3 Grade 11 Science Sc. 20, Sc. 24, BIO20, PHY20 or CHM20

6 GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Total of 100 credits, which must include the following: Phys Ed 10 or 10T Career & Life Management credits in any combination from CTS, Fine Arts, Second Languages, PE 20 or 30 or RAP 10 Grade 12 credits OTHER than ENG & SS 30 level CTS, Math, Science, Fine Arts, Second Languages, PE, RAP or Work Experience

7 WORK EXPERIENCE Only 15 credits can be used towards the 100 credits for your high school diploma Can only enroll in work experience if you are doing some new training or have new responsibilities at your job Students must have enough credits in their timetable to graduate, even if they are in work experience

8 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR COLLEGE Grade 12 high school diploma with credits at or above the general level (30-2 or 30-1 courses) Resumé can be required for some applications Experience in your field of study is beneficial

9 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR UNIVERSITY A minimum overall average of 65% - 70%. - Meeting the minimum average requirement does not guarantee acceptance to competitive programs like Nursing, Health Sciences or Engineering A minimum of five 30-1 courses (one of which must be English 30-1)

10 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR UNIVERSITY Arts: ENG 30-1 & 4 other acceptable 30-1 courses Sciences: ENG 30-1, MAT 30-1 (31 rec), at least 2 of CHM, PHY, BIO 30 & 1 other acceptable 30-1 Business: ENG 30-1, MAT 30-1 (31 rec) & 3 other acceptable 30-1

11 IMPORTANT REMINDERS (REQUIREMENTS) It is each student s responsibility to check the exact requirements for any program (College or University) To make sure you have the necessary credits for admission to the program that you are interested in, write down all the 30-1/30-2/30-3/31 courses you will have completed by June 2016.

12 HOW DO YOU APPLY FOR POST-SECONDARY? Go to the college or university website and proceed to apply online (only a limited amount of paper applications are available in Student Services) If applying outside of Alberta, you will have to make a request to the Department of Education for your official transcript to be sent to the post-secondary institution of your choice Need to register online with MyPass to order transcripts (mypass.alberta.ca)

13 POST-SECONDARY APPLICATION PROCESS We encourage you to look at more than one school (2-3 at the most; could get expensive) If you are applying to schools outside the western provinces (Ontario, States), you SHOULD book an appointment with one of the counselors The procedures are different and sometimes a little more complicated, so the earlier you get started, the better it is for you

14 POST-SECONDARY APPLICATION PROCESS The students are responsible to complete the online applications on their own We can review the applications to make sure they were filled in right The students are responsible to mail the admission fees and application forms when necessary

15 WHEN DO YOU APPLY FOR POST-SECONDARY? COLLEGE Deadlines are different for each college (even each program) Some colleges have a first come first basis application process (GPRC, NAIT) Applications are usually accepted after October 1st

16 WHEN DO YOU APPLY FOR POST-SECONDARY? COLLEGE GPRC = Applications open on October 1 st It is the student s responsibility to check the exact deadline for any college he or she is applying to

17 WHEN DO YOU APPLY FOR POST-SECONDARY? UNIVERSITY Deadline for most universities is March 1 st, if you want to be considered for scholarships It is the student s responsibility to check the exact deadline for any university he or she is applying to

18 EARLY ADMISSIONS Mainly for admission to universities and for programs with limited enrollment (Nursing, Engineering, Business) Student must have a minimum of 80% overall average to even consider applying for early admission

19 EARLY ADMISSIONS Can normally apply anytime between October and March Grade 11 marks will be used as indicators

20 EARLY ADMISSIONS Students who DON T want to apply for early admission should only complete their postsecondary application in February, after diploma exam results are in Be careful not to miss the March 1 st deadline (if you want to be considered for scholarships)

22 DIFFERENT FORMS OF SCHOLARSHIPS Guaranteed Offers: Based on academics only. If have 80% overall average and applying to university, will automatically get an offer Outside Agencies: Local and national agencies offer some scholarships. Criteria are set by the agencies

23 SCHOLARSHIPS All scholarships opportunities received in Student Services are announced in the community bulletin, during the morning announcements and in our scholarship booklet Some scholarship application forms are available in Student Services; most however are online

24 SCHOLARSHIPS It is the student s responsibility to: Check the criteria, deadline and transcript requirements for each scholarship Mail the applications Fill in all application forms We strongly recommend that students keep a copy of all scholarships they apply for Students are encouraged to be proactive in their own search for other scholarships

27 SCHOLARSHIP OFFERS If you receive scholarship offers from post secondary institutions or other outside agencies, let Mrs. Landry know Will be presented at Honours Night in September

28 STUDENT LOANS Different than bank loans Available for students who qualify Available for most post-secondary institutions

29 STUDENT LOANS Strongly recommend to apply online (faster and easier) Paper applications are available but have to call in to get them Applications usually not available until July

30 CAMPUS VISITS We strongly recommend that you take advantage of campus visits Attend open houses or just go online to request a campus tour

31 PRESENTATIONS FROM COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES Classroom presentations (sign up) One on one appointments with reps (sign up) Information table during lunch time You MUST sign up a day prior to the presentation and MUST have your teacher s permission to attend

32 RESIDENCES Can fill up quickly with first year students Important to stay aware of the dates for application and for deposits to ensure you have a room You should carefully choose your roommate

33 REFERENCE LETTERS It is BENEFICIAL and courteous to give individuals sufficient time to write letters on your behalf We suggest providing a week or two prior notice
