The program mainstreams developmental education students into a classroom with students who are regularly enrolled in the first credit-bearing writing course (say, College Writing 1). The developmental education students do the same work at the same level and with the same expectations as their peers, but also take an additional course that gives them comprehensive assistance for succeeding in College Writing 1. The program has proven extremely successful in helping students to efficiently progress through a course of studies without getting bogged down in the developmental education classroom. The ALP is currently being offered at 97 community colleges across the country. For this presentation, Luke Schlueter and Ryan Rodriguez would like to share their experiences teaching the program at Cuyahoga Community College, including the successes and challenges they have had and their vision for the program moving forward.
Session I 10:15 11:15 a.m. Michelle Miller, The University of Akron, OH Strands: Writing, Technology Title: Connecting a Disconnect: Basic Writers Gaining Critical Tech Literacy Summary: Most developmental writing faculty know students who are facile with cell phones and invested in social networking but don t know how to use technology critically as a part of their writing process. The 2013 TIDE Scholarship recipient will share her technology literacy assessment and the subsequent differentiated assignments. Session 1 10:15 11:15 a.m. Tracy Koski, Associate Professor, Columbus State Community College, OH Holly Finnegan, Professor, Columbus State Community College, OH Strands: Reading, Writing, Study Skills, COMPASS Title: Preparing for COMPASS or How to Avoid Dev. The research focused on why students believed they were successful and what additional support would have helped them. Rachel Frankel, Assistant Professor, The University of Cincinnati, Blue Ash, OH Ralph Kemphaus, Instructor, The University of Cincinnati, Blue Ash, OH Strands: Math Title: Changes in Developmental Mathematics Education at Two-Year Colleges: A Discussion of the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly Summary: The times are definitely changin in developmental mathematics at two-year colleges. We will discuss, with audience participation, the rise of online mathematics education in developmental mathematics, concentrating specifically on: online homework versus pencil and paper, flipping the classroom using instructor-made videos and online resources such as Kahn Academy, and the use of online at-your-own-pace modules such as ALEKS rather than lecture based teaching and learning. Results will be presented of the effects of the rise of online education on developmental mathematics teaching and learning from our own experiences and from the literature. Other areas of concern are the shunting off of courses from four year to two year schools, retention, and Ohio s mandated testing in high school and how that is affecting student placement scores. Discussion will follow concerning the audience s opinions as to the changes.
Barbara Gilbert, Associate Professor, Sinclair Community College, OH Dottie Bely, Professor, Sinclair Community College, OH Bernice Brown, Professor, Sinclair Community College, OH Heather Neal, Assistant Professor, Sinclair Community College, OH Denise Aselage, Assistant Professor, Sinclair Community College, OH Sandra Raye-Redmond, Annually Contracted Faculty, Sinclair Community College, OH Heather Whitaker, Annually Contracted Faculty, Sinclair Community College, OH Strands: Reading, Curriculum Redesign Title: Accelerating Students through Developmental Courses Summary: This paper will present the curriculum changes at Sinclair Community College that are intended to accelerate students through developmental courses by creating one week Boot Camp workshops, mini-master (eight week) courses, hybrid courses, and modules taught in a computer lab. Holly Finnegan, Professor, Columbus State Community College, OH Tracy Koski, Associate Professor, Columbus State Community College, OH Strands: Writing, Technology Title: Finding the Right Blend: The Hybrid Developmental Writing Course Summary: The distance learning revolution continues. Michelle Miller, Senior College Lecturer, The University of Akron, OH Marjorie Keil, Senior College Lecturer, The University of Akron, OH Becky McDonald, Senior College Lecturer, The University of Akron, OH Mindy Morse, Senior College Lecturer, The University of Akron, OH Strands: Writing, Technology Title: Technological Revolution: Personal Evolution? Summary: Finding ourselves teaching in a changing landscape larger classes, decreased access to computer classrooms, and the imperative to deliver the same quality educational experience within this expanding/contracting environment, writing faculty technophobes and technophiles face a dilemma. What technology to try, what to adopt, what to reject and why? Deborah Kellner, Assistant Professor of English at University of Cincinnati Clermont College, OH
Strands: Reading, Writing, and Study Skills Title: Strategic Reading Across the Disciplines Summary: This presentation will discuss ways to address difficulties of content area reading and writing across disciplines. College developmental students ability to engage in reading academic textbooks is equally challenged by their ability to represent developing ideas through writing. Attendees will confront the issues of helping students succeed across the disciplines Glenna Heckler-Todt, Senior Instructor, Developmental Writing, Shawnee State University, OH Strands: Writing, Study Skills, and General Skills Needed for College Success Title: Embedding College Success Skills in Developmental Writing Summary: Strategies to encourage college success in developmental students should be embedded within developmental courses. Mary Knauff, Program Director, College Bridge Program, Lower Price Hill Community School, Cincinnati, OH Soni Hill, Executive Director of Student Success Retention, Cincinnati State Technical and Community College
Strands: Community Partnership Title: It Takes a Village: Building a Bridge to College from the Community Summary: It Takes a Village presentation will provide an overview of the College Bridge Program, a community-based program working to build a bridge to college success for the developing student. The College Bridge Program is a unique partnership between Cincinnati State Technical and Community College and the Lower Price Hill Community School, a non-profit adult education center. The presentation will provide an overview of the partnership and discuss how the program uses one-on-one mentoring and key strategic interventions to remove the common barriers students face when beginning college and while completing developmental coursework. The discussion of the partnership and the interventions used will highlight how holistic mentoring can be used to make college more personal, accessible and supportive. Due to the lack of funding for developmental education, community based partnerships will be an important part of ensuring that colleges can effectively educate at the developmental level and remain open to all individuals. Through an examination of the College Bridge Program, colleges and educators can explore a working case study and learn how to implement a community partnership to improve access and retention. John Primm, Adjunct Faculty, Eastern Gateway Community College, OH Strands: Writing, Teaching, Assessment Title: Mastery Learning in a College Developmental Composition class Summary: This session will explore Mastery Learning, but will address personal essays & rhetorical analysis, under the theme of Metacognition. If we grade by a rubric, many students will be satisfied with C effort. Even if students get a grade and have an opportunity to rewrite, if they get a C, most students do NOT choose to do a rewrite, especially DE students. They are so used to and relieved to get a C, they believe they are not worthy of a higher score. So we have self-esteem issues that also need to be addressed. This session will address what I do in a composition class, with audience discussion to follow.
