3 Introduction Enrolling in college is the first step towards earning a degree or certificate, which in turn has a great impact on employment and earnings. Due to the strong connection between education and earnings, it is important that college opportunities and participation be distributed across all demographic populations. This report measures the participation levels of various types of students based on race, age, gender, and family background. Results are presented separately by student level, sector, and institution. Among the 499,030 undergraduate students attending public colleges and universities in Ohio in fall 2010, 13% were African, 2% were Hispanic, 2% were Asian, and 74% were white. The race categories used by the Board of Regents to classify students in higher education are slightly different from the categories used by the Census Bureau. The Board of Regents has categories for non resident aliens and for students whose race is unknown. These groups make up 2% and 5% of undergraduate students respectively. Nevertheless, the demographic profile of undergraduate students in Ohio public higher education is roughly comparable to that of the overall population in Ohio, in which 12.1% are African, 3.1% are Hispanic, and 1.7% are Asian (U.S. Census Bureau, 2010 Community Survey). Table 2 shows the distribution of undergraduate students based on characteristics such as part time status, age, gender, and firstgeneration college status. Across all sectors, 38% undergraduate students are part time, although these results vary considerably by sector. Most community college students (57%) are part time, as are about half (48%) of university regional campus students. Only 17% of university main campus student attend part time. A similar pattern is true with respect to age. Thirty four percent of all undergraduate students are over 24 years old, but these older students make up 51% of community college enrollments, 37% of university regional campus enrollments, and 18% of university main campus enrollments. Fortyfour percent of all undergraduate students are male. At community colleges, 42% are male compared to 40% at university regional campuses and 48% at university main campuses. First generation college students those students whose parents did not attend college are an important subgroup in higher education. A high rate of first generation enrollment is a sign that Ohioans are taking advantage of college opportunities to increase upward mobility. Among the students for whom parental education data exists (FAFSA filers), 49% come from families whose parents did not attend college. Firstgeneration students make up 59% of community college students, 55% of university regional campus students, and 39% of university main campus students. Graduate and professional students have a much different demographic profile than undergraduate students. For example, only seven percent of graduate students (master s and doctoral) and 5% of firstprofessional students are African, compared to 13% of undergraduates. Among graduate students, 66% are Ohio residents, 18% are from other states, and 16% are international students. Among first professional students, 77% are from Ohio, 22% are from other states, and 2% are international students. Most professional students are enrolled in medical (48%) or law (29%) fields. Thirty two percent of graduate students are enrolled in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Medical) programs. Ohio Board of Regents 1 February 2012

15 Definitions Term Race/Ethnicity Over Age 24 First Generation Full Time (Undergraduate) Part Time (Undergraduate) Residency Status: In State, Domestic Non resident, and International Gender STEMM Major Definition Race/ethnicity is determined from information collected in the Student Entrance (SE) file at the time of college entrance. Age is calculated as the difference between the reported year and the student's birth year. Over age 24 is the range typically associated with non traditional undergraduate students. Students filling out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) are asked the educational level of their parents when filling out the application. A student is identified as "first generation" if neither parent has any postsecondary education. Only those students who provide information on parental education levels are included in the denominator for this measure. The calculation is defined as the number of first generation students divided by the number of FAFSA filers who completed the parental education level field. An undergraduate student enrolled in 12 or more hours in the beginning fall term is considered full time. Developmental course credits are included in the credit total. A student enrolled in less than 12 hours in the beginning fall term is considered part time. Developmental course credits are included in the credit total. A combination of race/ethnicity and residency as reported at the time of first enrollment are used to determine residency status for enrollment reporting purposes. Students reported as non resident aliens in the race/ethnicity field of the SE file are classified as international. Of the remaining students, those whose state of residency is Ohio in the SE file are classified as Ohio Residents. All other students are classified as domestic non resident. Gender is determined from information collected in the Student Entrance (SE) file at the time of college entrance. Using the revised Discipline Area and Subject Field mappings of CIP codes, majors in the following fields of study are designated as STEMM: Science and Mathematics Discipline Area all CIPs except those in the Agricultural Business, Operations, and Management Subject Field; Engineering Discipline Area all CIPs; Health Discipline Area all CIPs; Trades and Repair Technicians all CIPs; Business Discipline Area Quantitative Business and Logistics Subject Fields; Education Discipline Area Math and Science Teaching Subject Fields at all levels, Education Research and Assessment Subject Fields at the graduate level; Social Science Discipline area Graduate Degrees in the Psychology, Anthropology, Geography, and Economics. 16 Notes 1 Starting in fall 2010 enrollments at multi campus community colleges are reported unduplicated at the institution level. As a result, students attending more than one campus of a single institution are counted only once. In prior reports, students attending multiple campuses of the same community college were reported separately for each campus attended. 2 New race/ethnicity categories were implemented by the U.S. Department of Education in Under the new classification system, the Asian/Pacific Islander category has been broken out into two new categories Asian, and Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander. In addition, a new category Two or more races was added. Starting in summer 2009, race/ethnicity data collected on entering students reflect the new categories. Enrolled students who entered college prior to summer 2009 and were identified as Asian/Pacific Islander will be shown in current and future enrollment reports as Asian. Over time, the percent of students identified as Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander or Two or more races will increase as new students are reported under the new race/ethnicity categories.
