5 Our Vision DAL was established in 2009 to provide the best training in Higher Education for future leaders in business. We achieve this through a unique partnership between excellent teachers in our modern Docklands Academy and work experience opportunities in our quality restaurant group. We also have partnerships with national and international universities, colleges and awarding organisations to provide valued courses for our students. 6 Why DAL? Our courses are developed in partnership with internationally recognised organizations. Your certificates and diplomas will be accepted in more than 120 countries around the world and you will be able to join top up courses at universities here in the UK or in your home country, should you wish to continue your studies. DAL has a partnership with restaurant industry leaders, providing unique workbased learning opportunities for our students. Our modern lecture rooms, library, IT room with online resources and cafeteria are all furnished to very high standards making the learning experience much more comfortable. We support you throughout your studies at DAL. Whether it is an academic issue or any other difficulty you have, you are not alone. Our representatives will brief you prior to arriving in the UK and if asked we also arrange your transport and accommodation needs when you get here, making it easy for you to focus on your studies right away. We offer scholarship opportunities for both home and international students, provided they pass their exams by the end of the year successfully. At DAL we have three intake periods throughout the year. These periods are October, January, and April. You can join our undergraduate and postgraduate courses during any one of these intake periods. We also accept students onto our English Courses every week. Our undergraduate and postgraduate courses run from 3 months up to 3 years, Professional and English Courses are from 1 week up to 44 weeks. During your studies at DAL, you will have access to our online resource platform, E-Docks. You can access a variety of course related materials, such as your timetables, lecture materials, e-books, case studies, quizzes, syllabuses, assignments and briefs. You may also communicate with your teacher, other students and the Academic Head. 6

London London is one of the world s most cosmopolitan cities with a vibrant mix of cultures and communities from all over the world. A city with history, London is home to many historic buildings, cathedrals, castles, assembly halls and grand homes. In addition, London is the business heart of the country. In the city centre, also known as the square mile, are the headquarters of many international companies. It is regarded as one of the financial centres of the world. 7

8 Campus life Our students will find a very pleasant atmosphere within our campus, with friendly staff and ultra modern facilities. Students can use the library and IT facilities or relax in our cafeteria with food and drink brought in from our partner restaurants. During break times students can walk along the waterside just outside the Academy, or take their tea or coffee onto the grassed area to sit and watch the water. There is a city farm in parkland next to the academy with many animals and by the water there is wildlife and water sports. We have an open door policy which means students can have daily access to management and staff and they can freely discuss their concerns. Students can also ask at the reception for the accommodation and welfare officer if they need any help. We re with you. Everyone goes through rough patches during their studies, especially during exam/assignment deadline times or simply because of the pressures of student life. That is why we offer our students academic and social support to help them achieve the best experience during their studies at DAL. Have a home away from home. DAL has a variety of accommodation options so you can be sure to find a place you can call home away from home. It may be an independent residence such as an apartment on your own, or student flats if you want the full student experience sharing with fellow students. 8

11 Btec Higher National Diploma in Business Overview Duration: 2 Years Academic Level: 5 Awarding Body: EDEXCEL Course Objectives The programme prepares you for a range of careers in business such as management, administration, personnel, marketing, accounting, and law as well as providing opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills and techniques and attributes essential for successful performance in working life. Entry requirements Related Level 3 or Level 4 Qualification or equivalent overseas qualifications at Level 3 or 4. For international students UKBA English language requirements apply. Progression Students will be able to progress onto the HND Year 2, which allows more specialization. Students may then progress to final year degrees in business subjects. Students may also find employment in the business sector and work towards membership of a professional body. 13 BTEC Higher National Diploma in Hospitality Management The Edexcel BTEC Higher National Diploma in Hospitality Management provides a work related programme of study that covers the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required in the hospitality industry and also offers the choice of specialist units. Overview Duration: 2 Years Academic Level: 5 Awarding Body: EDEXCEL Course Objectives To develop the knowledge, understanding and skills of learners in the field of hospitality management and provide opportunities for learners to gain a nationally recognised vocational qualification to enter employment in travel and tourism, or to progress to higher education qualifications such as a degree in a related area like business management or leisure and tourism management. 14 CTH Diploma in Catering & Restaurant Management Overview Duration: 3 Years Academic Level: 6 Awarding Body: Confederation of Tourism & Hospitality Course Objectives Develop the knowledge, understanding and skills of learners in the field of catering and restaurant management, and provide opportunities for learners to gain a nationally recognised vocational qualification to enter employment in this sector, or to progress to higher education qualifications. Entry requirements Related Level 3 or Level 4 qualification or equivalent overseas qualifications at Level 3 or 4. For international students UKBA English language requirements apply. Progression This qualification leads to further studies in catering and restaurant management, or hospitality management at postgraduate level. CTH/DAL qualifications are recognised as accepted routes onto the later stages of a number of UK and overseas university qualifications including undergraduate final year undergraduate and master degrees. 15 CTH Postgraduate Diploma in Catering & Restaurant Management The Diploma in Catering & Restaurant Management programme is designed to develop students academic and industry skills through work based learning provided by our industry partners. This programme is exclusively developed by DAL in partnership with CTH. Students gain independent research and study skills through this qualification. All aspects of catering and restaurant management, operational, functional and strategic issues and concepts are covered. Candidates will learn theoretical aspects at the Academy and will gain practical experience of the theory during work based learning at one of our industry partners including the Tas, Haz and Hazev restaurant groups. Entry requirements National or equivalent international qualifications at minimum level 3 in hospitality and/or tourism and/or business management; or evidence of at least three years work experience in the hospitality and/or tourism industry at a recognised management level or above. The financial aspect of the hospitality and tourism business is assessed by an examined case study designed by CTH. For example, you can study for a Level 4 diploma involving 20 weeks classroom learning (with a minimum of 15 hours taught study each week) and a 10 week work placement arranged at the beginning, end of or at any time during the course. If the course is at Level 6, you can take up to 50 per cent of the length of your course as a work placement. For example, you can study for a Level 6 diploma involving 20 weeks classroom learning (with a minimum of 15 hours taught study each week) and a 20 week work placement arranged at the beginning, end of or at any time during the course. 15

16 CTH Postgraduate Diploma in Catering & Restaurant Management Catering & Restaurant Management is an exclusive programme developed in partnership with CTH by DAL, combining academic theory with practical experience in fifteen five star partner restaurants. Overview Duration: 2 Years Academic Level: 7 Awarding Body: Confederation of Tourism & Hospitality Course Objectives Develop the practical experience and skills of learners alongside theoretical knowledge, and understanding in the field of catering and restaurant management; and provide opportunities for learners to gain a nationally recognised vocational qualification to enter employment in this sector, or to progress to higher education qualifications. Entry requirements National or equivalent international qualifications of a minimum level 6 or 7 in a relevant subject; or evidence of at least five years work experience in the hospitality and/or tourism industry at a recognised management level or above. For international students UKBA English language requirements apply. Progression This qualification leads to a Master in Catering & Restaurant Management or Hospitality Management. CTH/ DAL qualifications are recognised as accepted routes onto the later stages of a number of UK and overseas university master degrees. When it comes to running an actual catering company or restaurant, you will have covered the operational, functional, conceptual, and strategic aspects of the business throughout the syllabus. In this Level 7 programme you will learn in-depth how to manage a facility, the production/ service management of food and beverages, human resources, financial and marketing operations. We believe practical experience is invaluable. This is why we offer work placements at one of our busy partner restaurants where you will be allowed to try managing a restaurant, communicating with customers, liaising with suppliers, keeping an eye on financial performance as well as presentation of premises to understand how to achieve the smooth, effective, and profitable running of a restaurant. Assessment All units are assessed internally by a variety of assignment based tasks such as a business report, presentation and observation. Individual units can be graded either as fail, pass, merit or distinction. 17 CTH Postgraduate Diploma in Hospitality & Tourism This university endorsed international qualification is appropriate for both hospitality and tourism graduates and experienced hospitality and tourism managers without a first degree. It also provides an effective route for graduates in other fields who wish to make a career change into the growing hospitality and tourism sectors. Overview Duration: 1 Year Academic Level: 7 Awarding Body: Confederation of Tourism & Hospitality (CTH) Course Objectives Develop an understanding of the interrelationship between the hospitality and tourism sectors and explore strategic issues in business development, rather than operational level issues. Candidates have an opportunity to gain credit towards either an MA or an MSc degree. They also have the opportunity to develop higher level academic skills that can be applied in a vocational context. Entry requirements Minimum degree graded third or above; or a minimum of five years work experience at supervisory or managerial level for non-graduates from the hospitality and tourism industries. 18 Diploma in Strategic Management & Leadership BTEC Extended Diploma in Strategic Management and Leadership is designed to provide vocational training at senior management level. There is a strong emphasis on practical skills development alongside the development of knowledge and understanding. On successful completion learners can progress into or within employment and/or continue their study at master level. Overview Duration: 1 Year Academic Level: 7 Awarding Body: EDEXCEL Course Objectives Develop a range of skills, knowledge, techniques and attributes essential for successful business management. 20 After you apply provide Supporting Documents In order to process your application efficiently, we require the following documentation in support of your application; if you are applying online, we will contact you to discuss your application and request documents where necessary. Please make sure you will be able to provide the following when making your application: Signed application form Passport copy One passport size photograph Photocopies of Educational Qualifications: Diploma, Degree Certificate, College and/or School results. Please note: If you are applying as a mature student with no previous academic qualifications, please provide your CV/ resume and employer s references and a covering letter. Once we have processed and accepted your application we will await payment of tuition fees from you. When we have confirmed your payment, we will send you your Confirmation Offer Letter. Payment of fees is easiest by either: Banker s Draft (also known as a Bank Cheque or Demand Draft) made payable to Simply Alliance Limited and sent along with the above documents by courier or registered mail. Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) to the Academy account ensuring that you quote your Student Number on the Course Acceptance Form. Final Payment of the balance of your course fees will be due in two instalments. International Students Please be aware the process of admissions for international students varies. You will have to go through the visa application process and will need a CAS letter for Tier 4 visa from DAL. 23 Terms & Conditions Entry requirements must be met admission to DAL. Course, accommodation and airport pick-up fees are payable to Simply Alliance Ltd. Please note that Docklands Academy, London is a trading division of Simply Alliance limited which is a non profit organisation, limited by guarantee registered in England and Wales under Company Registration No DAL does not refund fees once the visa is obtained and/or student is registered with the Academy. If you are refused a visa at any time before arrival in the UK then you should send the original letter of refusal from the British Embassy/High Commission to DAL. We will give a full refund less 150 non-refundable deposit. If you require accommodation then it must be booked for at least two weeks. If the student cancels the accommodation booking less than 7 days before arrival a cancellation fee equivalent to 2 weeks of accommodation will be charged. If the student cancels the airport pick-up booking less than 2 days before arrival the agreed fee is non-refundable. DAL reserves the right to expel students if the fees are not paid within the agreed time limit and/ or the attendance requirement is not met. Fees are not transferable to any other student under any circumstances. All students are expected to behave in an orderly manner. Wilful damage to our property or threatening behaviour to our staff will lead to expulsion from DAL. Expelled students will be held personally responsible for rectifying any wilful damage. Students are advised that DAL, its employees and its representatives accept no responsibility for personal injury and/or loss of/damage to personal property on our premises, whether by fire, burglary, theft or otherwise. This condition also applies to public and private places when students are on academy trips/ excursions. Please note that any disputes will be covered by English Law in the UK. For further information please refer to relevant documents or contact us directly via at enquiries@docklandsacademy.co.uk DAL has the right to send international student attendance records to the United Kingdom Border Agency (UKBA) when required and/or requested. International students who have a student visa are advised that the UKBA requires a minimum attendance of 80% throughout the duration of the course and that if your attendance falls below the recommended 80% benchmark and/or you miss ten expected contact periods, then DAL reserves the right to cancel your course of study and will contact the UKBA. Holidays can be taken by arrangement during term break, and 2 weeks prior notice must be given. Prices are correct at the time of going to print. DAL reserves the right to alter published course fees without prior notice. Course start dates, course curriculum, time table, class room and programmes may be subject to change without prior notice. DAL has the right to cancel courses at short notice due to lack of demand. 23
