3 U.S. Department of State U.S. Embassy Oslo, Norway Respecting Nature and Culture This unique design mediates Oslo s vision for a highly sustainable, site-specific structure that responds to the neighboring community with the stringent security requirements of a modern American embassy. The preservation of existing landscape is fundamental to sustainable design. Restored riparian environment contributes to stormwater management. A Welcoming Public Façade Overhanging copper cornices and roofs visually unite the compound s buildings. The roof terrace over the Chancery s entry lobby is accessible from the cafeteria, whose lofty ceilings and three walls of tall windows frame the Embassy s primary public space. The design adapts features of traditional Norwegian architecture, while the material palette employs local copper, slate fieldstone, and granite. The green-roofed Support Annex is nestled beneath the sloping terrain. Mature trees soften the boundary with neighboring Huseby Woods. 4 Trinity University Center for the Sciences and Innovation San Antonio, TX The design uses a limestone wall to reference the history and geology of the site, as well as the architectural heritage of San Antonio. Limestone wall Sunshades The building s spine links engineering and the sciences to each other, as well as to the humanities, and serves as a thoroughfare to the heart of the campus. The limestone wall serves as a metaphorical aqueduct reflecting the importance of water to life and referencing geology, biology, and engineering. Innovation Center local elements Sustainable design advances the University s Red Bricks / Green Campus initiative. Native limestone celebrates the quarry on which the campus is sited. Atrium

8 SUNY Maritime Academic Building Throggs Neck, NY Pride of Place The geographic prominence and historic significance of the site demand highly specific design solutions. The building, clad in local stone that references the adjacent historic fort, appears to rise from the seawall it closely hugs. The essence of a design can be captured in a doodle. SUNY envisioned an imposing new structure appropriate to its prominent location in the New York City harbor.
