Hot and dry summer climate with chance of flash floods in winter. Existing Orchards Remote campus location provides a healing environment to enrich the learning experience for foster youth. Existing Foster Youth Academy Vicinity Map New Medium Density Housing Housing Infill Single-Family Housing Site Diagram

2007 Witch Creek Fire Damage to Academy As the population spreads into the wilderness of East San Diego County, there is increased hazard of wildfires and flash floods. SITE The Foster Youth School sustained damage from the Witch Creek Fire in housing units were lost including an administration building. Fire Burn Area 2007 Witch Creek Fire burned 200,000 AC destroying 1040 homes in 4 days

Sustainability Design Goals In the project, the definition of sustainability was expanded to encompass social concerns and the unique site program and history. Resilience The main sustainability focuses of the project can be understood in terms of: Environmental sustainability Natural disaster preparedness Creating a cohesive community

Sustainability Design Goals Environmental Fire and Flood Safety Nurturing Community Environmental Employ latest sustainable principles and construction methods to dramatically reduce energy consumption and resource depletion. Fire and Flood Safety Ensure the new construction is durable in the face of natural disasters. Establish fire safety by materials, protected vents, and 100 fire protective zone. Add new flood overflow channels. Nurturing Community Create new outdoor social spaces to provide for increased community interaction and cohesiveness. Clear definition of the incorporated communal space at front and private space at back of units.

Sustainable Strategies Architecture and landscaping help to cool interior and exterior ambient air in the summer. It does not matter how green the buildings are if they are washed away by flood or burned down by wildfire. Flood control culvert was enhanced by new overflow control channels. 100 wildfire control zones were added around the new buildings. Construction: 2x6 exterior walls with R-21 insulation Prefabricated wood framing Rainwater harvesting Radiant barrier with high insulation value at attic Eave vent with ridge vent cooling the roof sheathing High efficiency tankless water heaters Use of recycled mature orange trees for landscaping Radiation Barrier Fire Protective Vent Water Harvesting Each unit obtained LEED for Homes Platinum Certification

Solar Control and Lighting Open Kitchen Areas with Access to Porches The interior space was designed to be open, bright, with high ceiling to create relaxing environment. Well lit spaces require less artificial lighting and reduce energy consumption. Covered porches provide shade in the hottest months and reduce energy consumption as well as provide a welcome additional outdoor living room. Covered Porch and Deep Overhangs Bright and Wide Hallways with Work Stations & Storage

Water Sustainability Drought tolerant landscaping between housing will lessen the need for water in this dry climate. Community Garden Bioswales allow for excess runoff and rainwater infiltration and impoundment. Rainwater catchment barrels will store excess rainwater to be reused at a later time. Efficient fixtures reduce indoor water consumption. Rainwater Barrel Bioswale

Sense of Community The entry opens up to a large covered patio area. Multiple units share common paths and spaces creating the incidental interactions that can foster a sense of community. Outdoor covered porches expand the livable space and create outdoor rooms where additional people can come and interact.

Sense of Community For Chapter use only Entry - Number 1. Shared Barbeque Pit provides a place for people to gather outside for larger events and social gatherings. 2. Smaller transitional student units have individual entry porches to expand the living space into the outdoors. 3. Community gardens provide educational and shared opportunities for interaction and collaboration, and preparation for skilled horticultural jobs.

Following the Local Architectural Vernacular To enhance a familiar and friendly expression, and to reduce the stress associated with the residents, the homes incorporate the local agrarian vernacular of simple forms and materials. Hillside Neighborhood Housing Unit The simplicity also translates the clarity of space planning. Narrow and long buildings also fit better on sloped sites reducing the need of heavy grading. Simple Agrarian Forms and Materials

Architectural Character Utilize simple forms and materials that support the rural character of the San Pasqual Valley. Single Family Housing Elevation Colored cementitious board contrasting with cement plaster to add accent and identity. Standing seam metal roof to protect the building from flying ember. Duplex Elevation Light Towers Duplex Cross Section Summer Winter Roof design provides ample shade during the summer months and allows in sunlight during the winter months. Light towers help bring in daylight into the interior spaces.
