OVERVIEW OF EXISTING MUSEUM: SITE The Danish island of Bornholm is located at a critical juncture in the Baltic Sea between Sweden, Germany, Poland and Denmark and even as the island has been contested over the centuries, it features a distinct history and geographic identity. The Bornholms Kunstmuseum landscape is defined by far reaching views of the Baltic from high plateaus whose sloping fields terminate in dramatic crenellated granite cliff-faces plunging into the sea. James Carpenter Design Associates Inc Bornholms Kunstmuseum Bornholm, Denmark Concept Design September 16,
BORNHOLM ART, BORNHOLM PHENOMENA NATURAL PHENOMENA REPRESENTED IN CURRENT COLLECTION Since the early 19th Century, artists have been attracted to the dramatic light conditions that are unique to the island. Later 20th Century painters sought to capture the fleeting specificity of the landscape informed by the interaction of light, sea and ever shifting weather. The Bornholms Kunstmuseum s permanent collection represents the island s rich tradition of painting as well as the historical and contemporary crafts that are an important part of the island s culture. James Carpenter Design Associates Inc Bornholms Kunstmuseum Bornholm, Denmark Concept Design September 16,
Olafur Eliasson Philippe Rahm James Turrell POSSIBLE COLLABORATORS FOR SITE SPECIFIC WORK The museum has expanded over the years to accommodate the island s arts and crafts but now seeks to put its local focus in a global context. The museum seeks to become a Museum of Light. It aims to achieve this through the addition of the new wing dedicated to contemporary installation art focused on phenomenal light, organizing the experience of its diverse collections around the interpretation and perception of Bornholm s unique light. James Carpenter Design Associates Inc Bornholms Kunstmuseum Bornholm, Denmark Concept Design September 16,
MATERIALS AND LIGHT James Carpenter Design Associates is a design firm based in New York City. Founded by the light artist and designer, James Carpenter, the work of JCDA is motivated by a deeply held agenda that seeks to explore the natural world to manifest its material, structural and environmental beauty in the built environment. Light in transmission, reflection and refraction as it is perceived is a guiding principal in designing a complete architectural project. The result is architecture that reestablishes and enriches the individual s relationship with light and other phenomena found locally. The work is a synthesis of creative ideas and technical expertise that straddles the fields of art, architecture and engineering, while forging creative implementations of innovative technologies. JCDA is ideally suited to build upon Bornholms Kunstmuseum s existing architecture and collections and to coalesce its local focus and global vision. James Carpenter Design Associates Inc Bornholms Kunstmuseum Bornholm, Denmark Concept Design September 16,
MATERIALS AND LIGHT In keeping with the museum s plan for a museum of light, JCDA proposes to organize the museum expansion around a heightened sensory experience of light. JCDA s mediation and organization of light penetrating the museum will intuitively guide visitors through the museum circulation while heightening their receptivity to light as both a subject of art and a medium for art. James Carpenter Design Associates Inc Bornholms Kunstmuseum Bornholm, Denmark Concept Design September 16,
OVERVIEW OF EXISTING MUSEUM Building 3 Building 4 Building 5 Building 6 Building 1/1A Building 6A N LEVEL 4 _ ROOF PLAN Elevation varies Building 9 The existing architecture is organized by a linear space with a central skylight that spans its length. Galleries are located on either side of this axis while views of the landscape are periodically framed by the architecture. The path and galleries follow the landscape s sloping elevation down towards the cliffs and Baltic Sea below. The skylit path culminates in a a narrow bridge to an elevated outlook with stunning views. James Carpenter Design Associates Inc Bornholms Kunstmuseum Bornholm, Denmark Concept Design September 16,

OVERVIEW OF NEW MUSEUM: SITE PLAN SITE PLAN scale 1:100 JCDA s circulation plan runs parallel the existing wing. The two wings are connected by a light-passage concealed below ground but illuminated by a clearstory device running its length. James Carpenter Design Associates Inc Bornholms Kunstmuseum Bornholm, Denmark Concept Design September 16,
OVERVIEW OF NEW MUSEUM: AERIAL VIEW Light Fissures are integrated within the new below ground wing. These Light Fissures are reminiscent of the crevasses found in the nearby cliffs, bringing phenomenal sky brightness down below ground. Experienced at important transitions and thresholds within the new wing sequence, these vertical elements simultaneously articulate a sense of passage through the new galleries and theater, echo the site s powerful transitions from sky, to land, to sea while controlling the daylight s presence necessary for comfortably viewing the installations and navigating the museum. At the new wing s terminus, a threshold allows visitors into the landscape itself while heightening the transition from the enclosed galleries into the expansive landscape. The expansion present a minimal presence as the majority will be below ground level and yet the Light Fissures will provide daylight and a phenomenal sense of the landscape throughout the new architecture. James Carpenter Design Associates Inc Bornholms Kunstmuseum Bornholm, Denmark Concept Design September 16,
A new entrance road and approach to the museum will give an instant sense of the museum s purpose and organization. An all-glass building separates the only above ground building of the new wing. This interstitial void frames a beautiful view of the sky land and sea and features a minimal horizontal periscopic screen above that protects the glass ceiling from direct light and snow while concentrating views of the landscape s horizontal thresholds within its prismatic surface. Attached to the void is a small building clad in dark, textured ceramic that captures light and contrasts with the existing museum s white masonry elevations. James Carpenter Design Associates Inc Bornholms Kunstmuseum Bornholm, Denmark Concept Design September 16,
2 4 View 1 1 As one enters the museum and descends below ground, material surfaces responsive to the strategically inserted levels of day light, guides visitors through the museum s new wing and on to its existing collections. This phenomenal light provides a sense of the sky, land and sea within the museum enclosure, elevating the sensory experience of the museum as a whole. 22 After more than 35 years working with light, JCDA is well placed to sensitively respond to the specificity of a site as unique as Bornholm while respecting the museum s existing context. The recently completed Israel Museum, Jerusalem is a testament to JCDA s ability in this regard. Bornholm promises particularly powerful opportunities to explore the qualities of light as it exists in its horizontal transitions of sky, land and sea and in the qualities of light experienced within the nearby cliffs. Light will orient visitors throughout the museum, augment their sensitivity to the artwork on view and connect them to a sense of nature s beauty beyond the museum walls and the persistent mystery of life in the solar system - a mystery as persistent as the artistic impulse.
