4 Wednesday, March 25 th 8:40-9:30 AM Neighborhood Play, Everyday Keynote Speaker: Mike Lanza Mike Lanza is author of Playborhood: Turn Your Neighborhood Into a Place for Play. He also blogs at Playborhood.com. He has worked hard to create a very rich neighborhood play life for his three boys - ages 10, 7, and 5 - in Menlo Park, California. He has also discovered and written about dozens of neighborhoods throughout North America that are doing innovative things to make a vibrant life for kids. Prior to his writing career, Mike was a five-time software and Internet entrepreneur in Silicon Valley. He holds an MA in Education and an MBA from Stanford University. Neighborhood Play, Every Day Children hardly play outside on their own in their neighborhoods, and they are suffering in many ways as a result. Mike will describe how we can give children a life of neighborhood play, every day. First, he'll describe how this problem is social in nature, so that individual solutions like limiting screen time or structured activities are, by themselves, inadequate. Then, Mike will describe many innovative communities in the US that have vibrant play cultures for their children. Finally, he will provide a comprehensive set of step-by-step solutions for parents and child care providers. **************************************************** Breakout Session I: 10:00-11:30 AM Session I A Brain Development and Toxic Stress in Young Children Nicola Finch RN BSN, Postpartum/Newborn Home Visiting Nurse Guilford County DHHS-Division of Public Health; Natalie Tackitt, Parent Education Community Coordinator - Children s Home Society of NC; Joy Herrera, Consultant Bringing out the Best for Youth, Family, and Community Partnerships UNCG This presentation will define the types of stress and discuss how each affects the developing child s brain and body.
