1 Academic Staff Visiting Guidelines to Practice Date prepared Date Reviewed Reviewer Name Date of Next Review April 2009 Placement Forum April 2010 April 2010 August 2013 Josie White Jenny Temple April 2011 August 2015 SPECIFIC NOTE FOR FILE NAME OF REVIEWER
2 Academic Staff from SNAM and SHP Visiting Guidelines to Practice The provision of accessible based Placement Development Teams (PDT) has enabled some refinement of the present system of visiting students and mentors/practice-clinical educators during practice placements. The role of the PDT is to support all learners and mentors within the placement setting. Led by an academic and clinical lead the PDT is supported by a number of academics and clinicians all who aim to support learners in practice. Each PDT will have a range of professionals contributing their expertise all who can refer an issue speedily to an appropriate individual. Personal and /or placement tutors are complementary to these roles. Suggested criteria for visits by academic tutors:- New placement *(1) Student with poor overall profile or retaking a placement Student with significant disability support requirements Visit requested from the mentor Visit requested from the student Visit requested by member of programme team or PDT Visit required by individual programmes/professional bodies Engaged in own professional practice *(1) If a new placement is being considered it should be assessed for its suitability and support for learners before an educational audit or WPA is set up by the PQDD team. The School of Nursing and Midwifery will support its practice areas through the PDT role with an identified lead Academic from November 2013, supported by a team of academics from all fields of Nursing and Midwifery. The School of Allied Professions will support its practice placements through the link lecture role and identified placement leads. Once placement allocation has occurred, the specific placement/programme team within the university will identify key areas and students who are more likely to require specific support using the criteria above. The appropriate personal/placement tutor will then contact the mentor and their student to arrange a visit at the most appropriate stage of the placement. Both the Academic and Clinical of the PDT will be informed of the arrangement. This will not be the case when visiting is routine (e.g. Midwifery tripartite at summative points and ad hoc see Appendix 1). Placement Visit Decision Making Process Each s Placement Development Team will support all learners within their area, but from November 2013 the academic team will focus on nursing students.
3 All students and mentors who do not get a visit from a personal tutor will receive at the minimum a phone call from one of the programme or placement development team during the placement to discuss the student s progress The following flowchart is designed to clarify who mentors should contact to request support whilst they have a student on placement. Arrangements for support during Student and/or mentor require support nursingandmidwi feryplacments@ plymouth.ac.uk Contact Placement Development Team (PDT) - Academic - Practice If profession specific support is required the PDT will liaise with the University Programme team or personal tutor Contact details for each PDT are included for information in Appendix 2.
4 Appendix 1 Profession specific requirements for visiting students in practice (compiled by Programme s) NB For the purposes of compiling a comprehensive visit policy please add your programme title and any specific criteria or deviations from the general statements contained in the main policy e.g. Paramedic Practitioner, additional visit criteria essential progression review of student assessment & portfolio Common Programme BSc Adult Nursing BSc Child Nursing BSc Mental Nursing DipHE Mental Nursing DipHE Adult Nursing National Certificate in Dental Nursing Operating Department Practitioners BSc Emergency Care BSc Paramedic Practitioner BSc Midwifery Programmes BSc Physiotherapy BSc Occupational Therapy BSc Podiatry BSc Dietetics BSc Speech and Language Therapy Visit by personal tutor included As DipHE Nursing 1. Mechanism for informing staff of personal students placement whereabouts is required 2. Each visit should be logged and monitored so that follow-up calls can be made 3. Visitors must inform the records holders Visits from both students and mentors to discuss progress of current students future students/placements Essential progression review of student assessment & portfolio Regular visits are routine The midwifery personal tutor should be the first point of contact in all situations Staff continue to visit every student in their 2 nd and 3 rd year placements
