2 The Nursing and Midwifery Office offers financial assistance worth up to $2 million each year through scholarships, fellowships and grants. We are determined to provide excellent, contemporary and quality care to the patients and community of Western Australia (WA). Offering financial assistance ensures: enough nurses and midwives are available for all health services nurses and midwives know they are valued and supported nurses and midwives are experts in their chosen fields WA patients and community receive the very best health care.
3 Scholarships Priority for all scholarships is given to nurses, midwives and students studying at WA education facilities. Scholarships may be granted for study through an interstate education facility, however applicants must provide a supporting statement and evidence that the program is not offered in WA or their local regional area. All of the scholarships are highly sought after and may vary in value according to the number of successful applicants annually. They are paid per semester upon submission of academic results and tax invoices or receipts. Students studying nursing and midwifery Studying to become a nurse or midwife will lead to an exciting profession full of diverse experiences and opportunities. scholarships can cover up to 80 per cent of study costs. Studying to be an enrolled nurse: Applications are accepted prior to the completion of study, provided the first semester (or part-time equivalent) is completed when the scholarship is granted. Study must be a diploma level course that leads to registration as an enrolled nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. Studying to become a registered nurse and/or midwife: Applications are accepted prior to the completion of study, provided the first year (or part-time equivalent) is completed when the scholarship is granted. Study must be a degree that leads to registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia as a registered nurse and/or midwife. Or Applicants must be undertaking a conversion degree in nursing i.e. they are an enrolled nurse bridging to a registered nurse qualification; converting a diploma to a degree; or they are undertaking honours or a graduate entry masters program in nursing.
4 Registered nurses and midwives further study Postgraduate scholarships are available to nurses and midwives working in the public or private sector. Priority is given to those working for WA Health. Funds cover up to *80 per cent of the cost of the study of units required. The maximum value which may be awarded to an individual is $10,000 annually. *Lower percentage costs are awarded for non-clinical study. Postgraduate specialisation scholarships: assist registered nurses and midwives to complete specialisation courses at a postgraduate level in their clinical or non-clinical field. Midwifery scholarships: assist registered nurses to become midwives through study of a postgraduate diploma or masters in midwifery. Midwives completing a Master of Midwifery can also apply. Nurse Practitioner scholarships: assist registered nurses to study a Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner). Nurses and midwives registration renewal Scholarships are offered to assist enrolled nurses, registered nurses and midwives with expired registration, to undertake accredited courses that renew registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. 5 Fellowships A range of fellowships are available each year for WA Health nurses and midwives to undertake or complete research. Fellowships are worth up to $20,000 each. Helen Bailey Fellowship: promotes research in clinical nursing at a masters or doctorate level through a WA university. Margaret J Watson Fellowship: provides an opportunity for nurses or midwives to showcase their innovations and vision for the future of the professions through research. Midwifery Fellowship: awarded to an individual or team of midwives undertaking a higher degree or research in a clinical area of midwifery; or a proposed study tour that will provide opportunities to review innovation, best practice and evidence-based practice in relation to the provision of midwifery care. Aboriginal Health Fellowship: supports culturally respectful projects that will foster cooperative and collaborative partnerships, innovation and needs-based research to advance Aboriginal health. Awarded to a team or individual researchers. International Outreach Fellowship: supports research into nursing or midwifery in an international setting. Awarded to a team or individual researchers. Bali Memorial Fellowship: provides the opportunity to embark on a study tour to examine new innovations, best practice or evidence-based nursing in relation to disaster preparedness and management. 6 Other financial assistance Refresher programs Nurses and midwives who have completed a refresher program may also be eligible for financial assistance once employed within the WA Public Health System. Travel assistance Funding is available to support WA Country Health Service nurses and midwives who are required to travel to the metropolitan area to further their studies. Metropolitan nurses and midwives are also eligible for funding to undertake clinical placements in a rural WA Health service.
