Ignasi Carreras, director of the ESADE s center for social entrepreneurship and responsibility Xavier Mendoza, our dean, was so encouraged by what we learned from our participation in the Beyond Grey Pinstripes survey that he has asked each professor to reflect on and describe their course s social and environmental impact in the course catalog. Caswell selected KB Home, the $9.4 billion Los Angeles homebuilder. When it was her turn, Elisabeth got up and shared her findings, complete with company financials and stock prices. When she finished, her classmates politely applauded her efforts. In fact, they hated the presentation. She was brash and aggressive, they complained, extolling as she did the strengths of the company. Her confidence came off as arrogance. In short, the pitch was very American. "It was a major wake-up call," Caswell recalls. Over the next few months she learned to express her ideas in a more humble way, and soon she was no longer offending the sensibilities of her classmates. What Caswell found at ESADE is what many potential MBAs are looking for a program that offers a strong dose of management theory--and a global perspective. Because few U.S. MBA programs can match the diversity and international flavor of a school like ESADE, more and more students are heading to schools in Europe and Canada. BusinessWeek, October 06

What you find in the ESADE profile is more of a willingness to cooperate with others, even if they are competitors in the market, than to compete against them. For instance, professors have written a case study of the financial turnaround of FC Barcelona, and Mr. Soriano speaks about the soccer club s strategy to students. Silviya Svejenova, assistant professor of strategy and entrepreneurship, explores Spanish creativity in her research and teaching. She has studied film director Pedro Almodóvar and chef Ferrán Adrià s acclaimed El Bulli restaurant on the Costa Brava, writing academic papers on their creativity and discussing their techniques in classes.
