2 Presenters Dr. Patrick McGreevy received B.S. and M.A. degrees in Psychology and Special Education respectively from the University of Iowa. He was a special education teacher for eight years working with children and young adults with moderate-severe developmental disabilities, including autism. He received the Ph.D. degree in Education from Kansas University under the guidance of Ogden R. Lindsley. Dr. McGreevy served as an assistant professor in the Institute for Community Studies and the Department of Special Education at Louisiana State University, and an assistant professor in the School of Behaviour Analysis at the Florida Institute of Technology. He taught courses in applied behaviour analysis, as well as, curriculum and instruction for children and adults with moderateto-severe disabilities. He is the author of Teaching and Learning in Plain English, an introduction to Precision Teaching and the founder and first editor of the Journal of Precision Teaching. He is also the author of nine journal articles and a book chapter. He is also the first author of Essential for Living, a new functional skills curriculum and assessment for children and adults, with moderate-to-severe disabilities. He and his associates provide consultation and training for school districts, residential programs, and hospitals in the United States, the United Kingdom and several other countries. The special in the treatment of children and adults with moderate-to-severe developmental disabilities, who exhibit aggressive behaviour, self-injurious behaviour, and/or limited communication or language skills. Dr. McGreevy also conducts workshops on the treatment of noncompliance and severe problem behaviour and the teaching of communication skills and language using principles and procedures from ABA, especially from B.F. Skinner s analysis of Verbal Behaviour. Troy Fry received his B.A. in Science and Mathematics from North Dakota State University and M.S. degree in Behaviour Analysis and Therapy from Southern Illinois University. For the past 24 years, he has worked with children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism, in public and private schools, clinics, hospitals, home programs, as well as in residential programs in North America as a teacher, behaviour analyst, senior clinician, consultant, and clinical director. Dr Fry also has extensive experience in staff training and performance management. He is the founder and clinical director of Behaviour and Language Consultants in Minneapolis, MN and the second author of Essential for Living.

3 Seminar Description This two-day workshop will describe how Essential for Living is used to teach functional skills to children and adults with moderate-to-severe behaviors disabilities, including autism. Essential for Living was designed for children and adults of all ages with moderate-to-severe disabilities and limited skill repertoires. The purpose of Essential for Living is to help teachers, behavior analysts, curriculum coordinators, speech-language pathologists, and support coordinators: select functional skills for instruction and problem behaviors for management, and include these selections in IEPs and ISPs manage these problem behaviors and teach these functional skills, teach learners who are echolalic or who have limited vocal skills, select appropriate, alternative methods of speaking for non-verbal learners or learners with a limited spoken-word repertoire, track learner progress with respect to skills selected for instruction and problem behaviors selected for management, measure and document very small increments of that progress, and provide reasonable and fair measures of teacher performance based on that progress, document specific supports that learners currently require, and keep documentation of learner progress and required supports in one place and make certain that this documentation makes it to the learner s next classroom, residence, or program The objectives are to teach participants to: Understand when to use a developmental curriculum and when to use a functional skills curriculum Become familiar with the seven skill domains of Essential for Living Become familiar with the Essential Eight Skills Conduct initial and subsequent functional skills assessments. Record and track learner progress Determine when spoken words can function as a learners primary method of speaking and when a non-vocal alternative method is necessary Select an alternative method of speaking for non-verbal learners Teach the Essential Eight Skills Manage problem behavior in the context of skill development
