15 Daniel de Villiers Master of Business student International student Daniel de Villiers already held a Bachelor of Commerce and a Master of Business Administration from South Africa before he made the decision to study for his Master of Business in International Business with AUT. AUT is a young university and yet it is already ranked as one of the top universities in the world. That combination must be an indication of energy, commitment and vision, providing a great foundation for students to really achieve the best from their education. Daniel says one of the standout features of the university has been the research expertise of the teaching staff and the opportunity to interact with them. Studying for the future International business is an area of study that Daniel believes will prepare him to better understand and respond to global trends. International business activity is already playing a big role in the global economy, impacting on all aspects of our daily lives, and it is set to grow bigger and faster in the future. The role of international business activities on society, governments, domestic businesses, and on one another, needs to be understood. The global financial crisis has placed more emphasis on the notion that not all leaders are working for the benefit of the organisation that employed them and the need for alternative models of leadership that might be more effective. Real leadership Daniel s research focus is on the servant leadership model, which he says he witnessed first-hand in the leadership style of Nelson Mandela. I experienced the impact of servant leadership first-hand with the way President Nelson Mandela led South Africa through a very difficult and challenging but highly successful transition to democracy. Providing the local context, Daniel will explore the association between executive servant leadership behaviour and the perceived work engagement of top management team members in publicly listed companies in New Zealand.

17 Fole (Daleki) Finau Teaching Assistant, AUT University Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Marketing Master of Philosophy student Carrying out research that would contribute to Tongan community development was a big motivator for Fole Finau, and his postgraduate studies at AUT have allowed him to fulfil that goal. For his Bachelor of Business (Honours) dissertation, Fole researched the use of social marketing and social media to improve health literacy amongst Tongan youth. I wanted to conduct research that could build an evidence base for the Tongan community in an area that has not been well-researched. Research that matters Through his research, Fole identified that Tongan youth did not want to receive health information via social media channels such as Facebook. His findings indicate that the school setting is better suited to social marketing strategies around health literacy. Now enrolled in a Master of Philosophy, Fole is building on his earlier research and is further exploring social marketing in a cultural context. For my master s research I m looking at the impact of social marketing on lifejacket use among Tongan outrigger canoe paddlers. Essential skills Fole says the skills he is gaining through his studies will be invaluable for his future. Through my studies at AUT I have developed research capability, confidence and the skills to produce highquality solutions backed by credible evidence. These skills are not just applicable to academic research but also show potential employers in the industry that I m able to work effectively. Supported to succeed Juggling the demands of his studies with work and family commitments hasn t always been easy for Fole, but he says he has been well-supported by AUT staff. One of the reasons I chose AUT was the support available to me as a mature Tongan student, and the willingness of the academic staff to share their research and industry expertise.

The opportunities to apply this knowledge will be extensive, both in industry and academia. Planning your PhD Prospective PhD candidates are required to prepare a brief proposal of research, specifying the field of research and a general research question you wish to investigate. Staff in the Faculty of Business and Law supervise PhD research on a wide range of topics including accounting, business information systems, economics, finance, human resource management and employment relations, international business, management, marketing, advertising, retailing, sales, and taxation. For details about areas of research expertise at the AUT Business School refer to pages 7-9 or visit Application process If you would like information on your eligibility for admission to the PhD, you can contact business.postgraduate@aut.ac.nz. International students can PhD Admissions at phdadmissions@aut.ac.nz You should provide official copies of academic transcripts, and evidence of previous independent research outputs, such as an honours-level project or master's-level dissertation or thesis. You should also provide evidence of successful completion of studies in research methodology at a postgraduate level. PhD research allowance PhD research allowances are normally available for PhD candidates for expenses associated with data collection and analysis, and other resources associated with completing their research. Scholarships/graduate assistantships Research scholarships and graduate assistantships may be available to approved PhD candidates. For more details about scholarships visit For more details visit

19 Nimbus Staniland Ngàti Awa, Tùhoe Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Bachelor of Business in Human Resource Management and Employment Relations conjoint programme Bachelor of Business (Honours) Doctor of Philosophy candidate PhD student Nimbus Staniland is both a role model to her daughter, and a firm believer that you get out of study whatever you put in. Nimbus has truly made the most of every opportunity that has come her way at AUT. Evidence for her success includes being top student in the Bachelor of Business (Honours), being selected as a keynote speaker at AUT s Excellence in Business Support Awards and being awarded a Vice-Chancellor s Doctoral Scholarship. Taking on doctoral study The latest goal in Nimbus academic journey is a PhD and it is a challenge she is ready for. For my Bachelor of Business (Honours), I investigated the experience of graduate teaching assistants and its impact on their desire to pursue an academic career. My research led to a number of recommendations for human resources and training policy. For her PhD, Nimbus is building on her earlier research, exploring the career experiences of Máori academics in university business schools. Currently, the lack of Máori academics in many business schools potentially limits the universities ability to meaningfully engage with Máori in business. Increasing the number of Máori academics will ensure that business schools are representative of the wider population. It will also strengthen the universities ability to engage with the wider community. Critical skills At each stage of her learning with AUT, Nimbus says she developed skills that were needed to succeed. Through my studies I have developed my research, critical thinking and analysis and presentation skills. What stands out most though is the interaction with knowledgeable lecturers.
