1 10,000 Women: The Yale-Tsinghua Certificate Program in Healthcare Management Program Introduction Sponsored by Goldman Sachs and the Goldman Sachs Foundation, 10,000 Women supports partnerships with universities and development organizations to provide underserved women in developing areas around the world with a business and management education. 10,000 Women: The Yale-Tsinghua Certificate Program in Healthcare Management was formed in April 2009, and represents a partnership between Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management and Yale University School of Public Health. The program aims to help female Chinese healthcare managers and officials attain knowledge, skills and networks necessary for continued growth in healthcare careers. Graduates of the program are expected to be equipped to play leadership roles in improving the effectiveness, efficiency and sustainability of the Chinese health care system. This program is scheduled to run for 4 years and train approximately 500 female Chinese healthcare managers and officials. Goldman Sachs and the Goldman Sachs Foundation will provide qualified participants with a scholarship. The first cohort of this program will be trained from November 2009 to March Upon completion of the program, each participant will receive a Yale-Tsinghua Certificate in International Healthcare Management. 10,000 Women is one of the largest corporate engagement programs of Goldman Sachs. 10,000 Women is a five-year campaign to build greater shared economic growth by providing 10,000 underserved women around the world with a business and management education. The program is founded on research conducted by Goldman Sachs, the World Bank, and others which suggests this kind of investment can have a significant impact on GDP growth. Research also suggests that such an investment in women can have a significant multiplier effect that leads not only to increased revenues and more employees for businesses, but also healthier, better-educated families, and ultimately more prosperous communities. Professional Development Objectives Through applied work in management and leadership, this course will serve to Foster a more widespread understanding of the vision for health, social policy and system design in China. Build management capacity among women in the areas of strategic leadership and problem solving, quality improvement, hospital operations, human resource management, and financial management. Create a community of women in healthcare management that can work together to strengthen health delivery in China. Curriculum Description The classes will be taught in three one-week blocks, with a field project between blocks two and three to be completed at the student s employment site. 2 of 6 Block One: November 2 nd to November 6 th, 2009

3 Context/Big Picture: Overview of Healthcare Systems, Strategic Thinking for Healthcare Management and Leadership Block Two: November 9 th to 13 th, 2009 Practical Tools: Quality Improvement, Infection Control, Finance, and Healthcare Information System Block Three: March 1 st to March 5 th, 2010 New Topics in Healthcare Management: Marketing, Supply Chain, Disease Management, and Future Trends in Healthcare Management In addition to the three weeks of didactic training at Tsinghua University, students will be expected to return to their worksite between blocks Two and Three to complete a field project. The field project will test students ability to apply new management and problem-solving skills in tangible ways. The program also provides participants with: Case study and workshop opportunities; Mentor/mentee relationship with Yale and Tsinghua faculty members; Networking opportunities with Yale-Tsinghua faculties, guest speakers and other participants; An internet community and virtual classroom for student-student and student-faculty communication; Plenary sessions to present the field project and demonstrate an applied understanding of the course material. 3 of 6

5 We are seeking qualified female Chinese healthcare managers, providers, and/or officials whose professional experience and passion have equipped them with the potential to become leaders in the healthcare system in China, but who would not be able to access formal training programs. Specifically, potential candidates should meet the following criteria: 1. Candidates should be currently working at county or city-level hospitals or clinics (Secondary Level or below) as a middle-level or senior-level hospital administrator, or as a local county- or city-level health bureau official. 2. Clinicians who are serving in management capacities are encouraged to apply; candidates possessing an MD degree are qualified for the program. 3. Candidates must have received a bachelor degree from an accredited Chinese university or college. 4. Candidates possessing an undergraduate or graduate degree in business administration or similar programs (e.g., MBA) do not qualify for this program. 5. Candidates possessing a doctoral degree do not qualify for this program. Financial Support Goldman Sachs and the Goldman Sachs Foundation will provide qualified participants with scholarship. Candidates whose personal annual salary exceeds 100,000 RMB*, or whose household salary exceeds 200,000 RMB*, do not qualify for a scholarship to the program. * In addition to the annual salary requirement, Goldman Sachs and Goldman Sachs Foundation will also consider the average local income when deciding the whether the participants are qualified for the scholarship.
