No refunds will be made for cancellations after the close of online registration Speaker Bios Joy King Ewing, RHIA, CCS, CCDS has over 20 years of experience in Health Information Management, with specialized education and experience in Inpatient coding. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Health Information Management from the University of Tennessee. She directed the Health Information Management Dept. in several hospitals in Birmingham, AL. She developed and taught statewide coding guidelines when DRG reimbursement was implemented in She served as a consultant for Alabama Quality Assurance Foundation (AQAF, the AL QIO), and Florida Medical Quality Assurance, Inc. (FMQAI, the FL QIO) for several years. She taught Coding Workshops and oversaw all coding activities related to PEPP under the 6 SOW and 7 SOW for Alabama Quality Assurance Foundation, including coding education across the state of Alabama. She made many presentations to medical staffs across the state with the Deputy Medical Director of AQAF, speaking on documentation/coding issues and medical necessity. She is Past-President of the Alabama Health Information Management Association (AAHIM), Distinguished Member of AAHIM for 2003, and served on the CSA task force for the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). She has worked with Morgan Stewart Consulting (now part of Precyse) and Medical Management Plus in the areas of coding audits, concurrent documentation programs, and other coding-related activities. She currently works as an independent contractor with YES-HIM Consulting. She also has her own consulting firm, Joy King Consulting LLC. She offers presentations related to Clinical Documentation as it impacts Coding & Reimbursement to Hospital Medical Staffs and other Hospital Staff. She has done several presentations on Severity-Adjusted DRGs, Present on Admission indicators and Pay for Performance topics related to upcoming changes in reimbursement for Medicare for Case Managers, Physician Advisors, and Coding Staff. She has been a featured speaker at AAHIM & THIMA State meetings, Coding Symposiums, State & Regional HFMA Meetings, Medical Director and Board of Director Retreats for hospitals, as well as the State Healthcare Risk Management Association. She also has expertise in auditing and coding consulting for Long-Term Acute Care Hospitals (LTCHs). She obtained her certification as a Clinical Documentation Specialist in June She is an approved AHIMA ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer and has made several presentations on ICD-10 to Hospital and Medical staffs. She has also participated with YES-HIM Consulting to develop online physician training on ICD-10. Joan C. Ragsdale, JD Ms. Ragsdale serves as the Chief Executive Officer for MedManagement, LLC, a company she cofounded in She is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Alabama where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude. She received her law degree from the University of Alabama where she was an editor of the Alabama Law Review and was on the National Moot Court team. Prior to joining MedManagement, she practiced law in Birmingham. She was a partner with Sirote & Permutt and later, Bradley, Arant, Rose & White where she served as Chair of the Healthcare Group. 3

4 She is a past-president of the Health Law Section of the Alabama Bar, was previously selected for inclusion in the Best Lawyers in America as one of the Birmingham Business Journal s Top Ten Business Women in Birmingham and as a Birmingham Health Care Hero. She is a frequent speaker and author on current health care regulatory and compliance issues. She is a board member of the Jefferson County Medical Foundation Trust, the UAB Callahan Eye Foundation, Inc. board, and a member of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Leadership Committee. Danne Howard Danne Howard joined the AlaHA team in 1996 and currently serves as the Senior Vice President of Government Relations and Emergency Preparedness where she represents the interests of the Alabama Hospital Association s membership in the federal and state legislative and regulatory arenas Ms. Howard also oversees the administration of federal emergency preparedness grants for Alabama s acute care hospitals and works with state government leaders to help coordinate response of the medical community during times of disaster and emergency. Ms. Howard was born in Demopolis, AL and attended Auburn University in Montgomery, Business Administration. She has one son, who lives in Washington DC and works for the US House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce. Jim Henry, Partner Jim Henry has extensive experience representing a broad spectrum of health care providers, including hospitals, senior housing and long term care facilities, physicians and physician practices, hospices, home health providers, pharmacies, and medical equipment providers. His practice encompasses operational counseling, regulatory advice, and protecting the rights of health care providers before various regulatory agencies and in state and federal courts. Jim regularly provides advice and counsel in matters relating to Stark law, the Anti-Kickback Statute, HIPAA, contract arrangements, survey and certification, licensing, reimbursement and others. Brian T. Bates, CPA, CHC, MAc Mr. Bates has been the Chief Compliance Officer for The University of Alabama Health Services Foundation, P.C. ( UAHSF ) since September In April 2014, Mr. Bates compliance role within UAB Medicine was expanded when he was named The UAB Health System Compliance Risk Coordinator. UAHSF is the 1,200+ physician Faculty Practice Plan for UAB Medicine. Prior to joining UAHSF, Mr. Bates was the Chief Compliance and Privacy Officer for the Baptist Health System in Birmingham, Alabama. Mr. Bates is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the UAHSF Compliance Program and to help coordinate compliance activities across the UAB Health System. His office provides auditing and monitoring, education and training, and regulatory accreditation services to all UAHSF Departments. Mr. Bates takes a hands-on approach to each Department and provider and helps them identify and manage the risk areas that are specific to the health care services they provide. Mr. Bates started in the field of compliance with Baptist Health System, Inc. (BHS) in Birmingham, Alabama. During his tenure, Mr. Bates helped develop and implement BHS Corporate Compliance Program Do the Right Thing. 4

5 Areas of compliance within the system included hospitals, clinical laboratory, home health agencies, and physician practices. Mr. Bates is a frequent local, regional and national speaker for organizations such as Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), University Health System Consortium (UHC), Medical Group Management Association (MGMA), American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA), American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), and Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) on health care topics ranging from Fraud and Abuse compliance to HIPAA regulations. As a speaker, he has spoken to over 20,000 health care providers (physicians, administrators, professional coders, clinical staff, etc.). Mr. Bates provides a practical view of the myriad of rules and regulations facing health care providers today. Mr. Bates was one of the first 50 people certified in healthcare compliance (CHC) within the United States. Mr. Bates is a member of the Health Care Compliance Association (HCCA), Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). Mr. Bates is also an active member of the UHC Legal and Compliance Council, as well as the AAMC Compliance Officers Forum. Stephen Stair, MD Dr. Stephen Stair graduated medical school from the University of Tennessee and performed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Stair is Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine and Medical Compliance Officer for the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation. In addition to his duties for UAB Medicine, he serves as the Chair of the IMPACT Clinical Advisory Group, Associate Chief Integration Officer, and the Chairman of the Health Information Management Committee. Dr. Stair has been instrumental in providing education to new physicians and residents on the Essentials of Evaluation and Management Coding. Additionally over the years, he has educated the UAB faculty and staff on topics related to compliance, patient safety, quality, accurate coding and documentation. Katherine H. Murphy Katherine has over 25 years of experience in hospital revenue cycle management specializing in Access process redesign and implementation. She has a BA from Northern Illinois University and graduate Certificate from Benedictine University. She served four years on the Board of Directors for NAHAM, five years as Illinois affiliate President and is a member of HFMA. As Access Director in a multi-facility health system, Katherine chaired the Registration Council and the Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Access Group. Joining Passport in 2004, she applies her experience to automated solutions and oversees the Speakers Bureau. In 2014 Katherine was inducted into the NAHAM Fellows Program, a select group composed of colleagues recognized for their outstanding contributions to NAHAM and the field of patient access services. Kozie Phibbs, RHIA Kozie is the Regional Sales Manager and Computer Assisted Coding Product Specialist representing Dolbey. She is a former corporate HIM Director for a large health system in Northern Virginia and Past President of the DC AHIMA Chapter. She is currently the Regional Liaison for NCHIMA, serving on their Governance Board. For the past several years, she has spoken for the state annual conventions for North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Alabama. 5

6 Nationally, speaking at AHIMA, as well as serving on several CAC Task Forces. She has co authored several articles which were published in the Journal for AHIMA. 6
