Cardiac Rehabilitation Continuum Heart disease is the most commonly diagnosed disease, affecting approximately 26 million Americans annually. At Henry Mayo, patients with heart disease are provided a full continuum of services, including diagnostics, coronary intervention, open heart surgery, and recovery and rehabilitation. To provide the highest quality care, Henry Mayo has recruited the best surgeons, cardiologists, clinicians, and staff in the greater Los Angeles area. Our highly skilled and experienced team is committed to providing exceptional care to every patient, around the clock, said Jean Marie Stewart, RN, Senior Director of Cardiovascular Services. In 2013, Henry Mayo achieved STEMI Receiving Center Status from the Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency, allowing for the most severe of heart attack patients to be transported directly to our hospital for life-saving services. The same year, a Cardiac Rehabilitation Program was developed at Henry Mayo, providing specialized individual care for heart care patients who have been discharged from the hospital. With a combined total of more than 50 years in working with heart patients, the registered nurses who lead this program have specialty training and are members of the American Association of Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. February is National Heart Month. Check out our calendar of events at henrymayo.com

Program Completes of Care Free Healthcare App from Henry Mayo Shows ER Wait Times The Cardiac Rehabilitation team maintains close contact with physicians, who receive regular progress reports on their patients, Stewart said. While in the program, a patient s cardiac risk factors such as blood pressure, heart rate and rhythm are assessed. A safe exercise and risk factor reduction plan is then put into place, addressing such issues as proper nutrition and stress management. Regular participation in a Cardiac Rehabilitation program improves stamina and strength, increases confidence and well-being, and lessens the physical and emotional effects of heart disease, said Dorinda Perez, RN, Clinical Coordinator of Cardiac Rehabilitation Center. Our mission in every interaction is to convey heart-felt compassion and offer excellent services to every single one of our friends and neighbors who come through our doors. IYH Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital now has a free healthcare app available for patients, employees and Santa Clarita Valley community residents anyone who wishes to use it. The itriage app displays Henry Mayo s Emergency Department wait times in near real-time. The app also includes an easy-to-understand symptom checker (especially useful for those who have children), a directory of Henry Mayo-affiliated physicians, a medication guide, a news section, and more. itriage also helps you maintain your health information, including medications you take, allergies, procedures you ve undergone, past and future physician appointments as well as connections to your preferred physicians and facilities all in one safe place. itriage is available for both iphones and Android devices. Links for downloading the app can be found at www. itriagehealth.com.

Leading the Way with Cutting Edge Technology 3D Mammography Early detection is crucial to treating breast cancer. With the Genius 3D mammography machines installed this past summer at Henry Mayo s Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center, up to 41 percent more invasive breast cancers can be detected. We are thrilled to be able to provide our patients with the latest technology in mammography. Both the radiologists and the technologists love working with the 3D platform knowing that they are providing the best that there is, said Terry Lynn Bucknall, Director of Women s Imaging Services. Genius 3D mammography, the first clinically proven, superior 3D mammography approved by the FDA, allows physicians to see masses and distortions associated with cancers significantly more clearly than can be seen using conventional 2D mammography. Our radiologists have been able to detect cancers that would not have been detected using 2D imaging technology and we have been able to eliminate some return visits, thus eliminating additional stress and worry for our patients, Bucknall said. Bronchial Thermoplasty Until recently, the treatment for severe, persistent asthma has largely consisted of a regimen of pills, inhalers and injections. With the addition of the Alair System, which allows the staff of Henry Mayo to perform bronchial thermoplasty, asthma patients in Santa Clarita and beyond now have a cutting-edge new way to treat their disease. Bronchial thermoplasty works by shrinking the smooth muscle that lines the bronchial tubes, preventing them from constricting as strongly. Treatment is done in three separate visits and need not be repeated. This is not going to cure asthma, but it will help patients enjoy an improved quality of life, including becoming more active and possibly decreasing or eliminating medications, said Michael Collins, Director, Pulmonary Services. Henry Mayo is among the first hospitals here in the Los Angeles area to offer the procedure. Asthma patients in the Santa Clarita Vally can now receive this treatment close to home. 6

SimLab Provides Innovative Training Innovation is crucial in any industry and healthcare is no exception. Taking a cue from airline flight simulators that have greatly reduced plane crashes, Henry Mayo s SimLab is using high-fidelity, computerized manikins (medical mannequins) to train clinical staff for real-world medical situations and improve patient safety. The manikins, which can be controlled remotely, have very authentic human characteristics, according to Robbie Bailey, RN, ACC Recovery. The simulation is as near a real experience as you can get without having a real patient. The manikin talks, breathes, and has a pulse (or not) depending on the scenario, Bailey said. Medical errors and procedural mistakes are the leading causes of death among hospitalized patients in the United States, so such training is imperative. According to the Joint Commission, simulations improve technical competency and critical thinking skills without putting a patient at risk during the training process. Located in the Education Center on Henry Mayo s campus, training at the SimLab is available for all staff. Since the program began in August 2014, participation has included respiratory clinicians, nurses, and physicians. SimLab scenarios have included advanced cardiac life support, pediatric advanced life support, neonatal resuscitation, maternal codes, traumas, and malignant hyperthermia. Participating staff are videotaped during each exercise, with a subsequent debriefing. Debriefing is an important discovery period for participants as they identify problems and solutions through discussion and evaluation, said Colleen Krieger, RN, HealthStream/Simulation Education Specialist. That s where the true learning occurs. For Suzanne Garcia, RNC, Women s Unit, participation at SimLab has been already proven to be a valuable experience. I didn t feel like I was playing pretend like other emergency drills. I have rarely left a drill feeling more confident and comfortable with the tasks I was expected to perform in an emergency, Garcia said. IYH Improved Quality of Life Since the procedure, I ve cut down on medications and my breathing has improved. Now when I go to sleep I don t wake up in the middle of the night. I m so glad that Henry Mayo had this procedure available. Hans Herman, Patient 7

Thank You for Making My Daddy Better In the early summer of 2014, it was business as usual for Bruno DeBerdt, the owner and operator of a horse transport business in Santa Clarita. But what started as a regular day at his home office resulted in eight hours of emergency surgery at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital for a potentially fatal heart condition. DeBerdt, 57, was making phone calls when he was suddenly hit by such intense pain that even speaking proved difficult. He was able to dial 911 and briefly explain his situation. As he waited for the ambulance to arrive he knew he had to go outside to make sure they would not drive by his partially-obscured driveway. I knew I was in trouble and that I was going to pass out but I needed for them to see me, he said. Luckily, my neighbor saw me and waved the paramedics into my driveway. I was blue by the time they got me on the ambulance. DeBerdt was transported directly to Henry Mayo s Emergency Department where it was quickly determined that he needed emergency surgery for an ascending aortic dissection, a rare and potentially fatal condition in which blood passes between the layers of the aorta, creating a pouch of weakened arterial wall filled with blood. This blood may leak out of the dissection and collect in the chest around the heart, putting pressure on the heart and preventing it from pumping effectively. I remember waking up in pain in a dark room so much pain I could not speak I was told I needed surgery, he said. DeBerdt credits Dr. Michael Soltero for quickly putting together a topnotch surgical team. Eight inches of the damaged artery were replaced. He credits ED nurses for supporting and staying with him the entire time. Dr. Soltero was brilliant, he said. He gave me a second chance at life. DeBerdt s wife, Rachel, and their daughter Sydney, 9, were on vacation in Australia at the time and were notified of the situation via telephone. They took the first available flight back to Los Angeles. A few days later, he required another surgery to remove fluid around his heart. Dr. Roderick Yasuda performed the surgery. DeBerdt also expressed his gratitude for his primary physician, Dr. Charanjit Saroa, his hospital physician, Dr. Ashok Lall, Sal Castillo, CNA, David Brown, RN, Renee Battaglia, RN, and the cardiac rehab team. Following his surgery, DeBerdt joined the cardiac rehabilitation program, where he learned about proper diet, exercise, and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I m feeling better and I see that I will be able to live a normal life, he said. Care at Henry Mayo was fantastic. I would not be alive today if it wasn t for their cardiac program. Daughter Sydney added, Thank you for making my daddy better. IYH I would not be alive today if it wasn t for Henry Mayo s cardiac program. 8

Foundation Focus New Endowment Fund Support from a growing community is crucial for Henry Mayo to continue delivering world-class healthcare. The Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Foundation is proud to announce the launch of a new Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center Endowment Fund, thanks to the generosity of Robert and Andi Parker, longtime supporters of the hospital. The fund will earn interest that will be used for the purchase of technologically-advanced cancer detection and treatment equipment. The Parkers consistent support has and will continue to benefit the health of our community for many years to come, said Diana Vose, Foundation President. We are incredibly grateful for their ongoing commitment to Henry Mayo. New Patient Tower Groundbreaking The Foundation is eagerly anticipating the planned groundbreaking on the new Henry Mayo Patient Tower in the fall of Henry Mayo has been serving a 650-square mile region as a dedicated, 24/7 acute care center for more than 40 years, Vose said. The area has experienced tremendous growth in that time and with it comes a critical need for increased services and patient beds. The $150 million Patient Tower will provide more than 90 new medical/surgical beds, 21 anti-partum/post-partum beds, and seven labor and delivery beds. All rooms will be private, with more natural lighting and bathrooms. The Patient Tower will also allow for expansion of maternity services in the Women s Services unit, including a dedicated Caesarian Section Operation Room. Additionally, the tower roof will serve as the hospital s permanent helipad, with direct access to the Emergency Department, providing better access to emergency bed capacity and improving disaster preparedness. Your Support is Needed To show your support for breast health or the Patient Tower, please contact the Foundation office at (661) or visit 9 9

Spine and Joint Excellence Designations at Your Community Hospital It s official. Henry Mayo s Joint Replacement and Spine Surgery, already known for world-class care, received four Joint Commission Center of Excellence designations in October The designations were awarded for hip replacement, knee replacement, shoulder replacement, and spinal surgery. The Joint Commission s standards and emphasis on clinical practice guidelines help organizations establish a consistent approach to care and provide an objective assessment of clinical excellence. Our staff is really proud of the Joint Commission designations, said Pam Geyer, Manager of Joint Replacement, Spine Surgery and Pain Management at Henry Mayo. One key to excellence is a pre-surgery patient education class. Staffed with a dedicated nurse navigator and a physical therapist, the class has an impressive 92 percent attendance rate, well above the industry standard. We talk about how to prepare for hospitalization and about the surgery itself with examples of the newest implant devices that patients can examine, Geyer said. We also discuss how patients can best care for themselves when they go home. The more prepared a patient is, the greater the opportunity for a positive outcome. Henry Mayo s Joint Replacement and Spine Surgery Center also offers the latest in implant technology and minimally invasive procedures. Our staff is comprised of highly skilled and recognized surgeons, yet we still have that community touch. Your expert surgeon will also manage your case, Geyer said. According to Geyer, the idea to become a Center of Excellence came into inception eight years ago and working together was crucial to making it a reality. A project of this magnitude cannot happen without major effort. I credit a fantastic team, including Dr. Charles Young as the Medical Chair, as well as incredible executive leadership. Henry Mayo s CEO Roger Seaver strongly championed bringing this high level of care to the Santa Clarita Valley, Geyer said. IYH DID YOU KNOW? Henry Mayo is the only hospital in California with the Joint Commission Center of Excellence designation for shoulder replacement and one of four hospitals in the state with the designation for spinal surgery. 10

ACTIVE LIFESTYLES New Technology Provides Pain-Free Recovery Physical therapy patients now have a space-age ally in the fight against pain. The AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill has been in service at Henry Mayo s Outpatient Therapy Services in Santa Clarita since October 2014 and the results are already impressive. There is tremendous potential to continue conditioning as you rehabilitate, especially in athletes. One of our athletes in training for a cross country competition has been able to train without the usual pain. As a result, her coach stated that her performance and times have improved, said Mike Saguibo, Physical Therapist. The AlterG reduces gravity s impact on the body by unweighting a person s body weight between 20 and 100 percent, offering patients and athletes the ability to recover from surgery faster or train after injury without pain. There is tremendous potential to continue conditioning as you rehabilitate an injury, especially in athletes with overuse injuries, Saguibo said. By allowing patients to rehabilitate with less pain, there s a reduced risk of further injury, which may enable faster healing. Additionally, the AlterG offers gait training and strengthening for neurological patients, strengthening and conditioning for older adults in a fall-safe environment, balance training, and acts as an adjunct for weight loss and conditioning programs. I ve had one patient tell me it s improved her confidence in transitioning from walking with a cane to walking without one during her rehabilitation from a total knee replacement, said Saguibo. The AlterG has three cameras that capture the patient s leg motion while on the treadmill and a video monitor that allows both the therapist and patient to monitor the patient s walking or running pattern from multiple angles. This helps the therapist to offer corrective tips. This is the kind of precise, real-time tracking of progression that helps keep patients engaged, motivated and compliant with their IYH rehabilitation program, Saguibo said. 11

COMMUNITY BRIEFS New SCV Community Care Program Puts Patients First Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, in partnership with American Medical Response (AMR), is improving the transition of care for the Santa Clarita Valley community. Under the new Community Care program, Henry Mayo s transitional care nurses work with AMR community care coordinators to provide a high level of care to patients who are transitioning from hospitalization to home. The goal is to improve patient health outcomes, improve patient satisfaction, and ultimately reduce hospital readmission rates. The program offers potentially time-critical evaluations, deployment of home-based monitoring and rapid resolution of non-medical challenges that, if unresolved, can often lead patients back to the hospital. For more information, call Henry Mayo (661) or AMR (818) or Melissa.Wynstock@amr.net. Holiday Home Tour Offers Spectacular Experience Attendees enjoyed touring three beautiful Santa Clarita Valley homes decked out in true holiday style during Henry Mayo s 34th annual Home Tour. A Holiday Boutique was open to the public that same day showcasing a wide selection of creative and unique holiday items. For those who just could not wait, a Preview Gala held at the Valencia Country Club allowed a sneak peek at homes, starting with a festive buffet dinner. The holiday Home Tour is hosted by the hospital s Home Tour League. To date, Home Tour events have raised more than $750,000 to benefit Henry Mayo s Women s Services. The Holiday Home Tour League is open to new members throughout the year. Membership dues are $30 a year and time commitments can range from one day during the tour to as many hours as a volunteer would like to contribute. For more information, visit or call (661) Henry Mayo Has Heart Henry Mayo s Heart Walk team recently joined other community teams for the 5K Santa Clarita Heart Walk. Henry Mayo was a presenting sponsor of the event and hosted a booth at the Westfield Valencia Town Center where heart healthy education and free health screenings were provided to the public. The annual event aims to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke the nation s No. 1 and No. 4 killers while promoting healthy habits such as walking regularly. In addition to Santa Clarita, American Heart Association Heart Walks take place in Santa Monica, Pasadena, Long Beach and Palmdale. The overall goal in Los Angeles County is to raise $1.75 million. There is no fee to participate. For more information, visit Being A Good Neighbor and Getting Prepared The Henry Mayo Emergency Management Program has been awarded a $5,000 grant from Southern California Edison. The grant will be used to train neighborhoods on how to be self-reliant during the first 72 to 96 hours after a disaster strikes. Self-reliance can be critical during this period because traditional responders may be overwhelmed. Terry Stone, Emergency Manager, and Tony Magdaleno, Disaster Planner, will promote this program through community outreach efforts. Their first priority will be to train senior communities. The focus of the self-reliance training is to teach people the steps they should take to secure their homes and protect their neighborhoods immediately following a disaster. Included in the training are disaster preparedness tips such as identifying skills and equipment each neighbor has that can be useful in responding to disasters, creating a neighborhood map that shows the locations of each natural gas meter and propane tank (about 67 percent of house fires following disasters are caused by leaking gas), and identifying the locations of neighbors who may need extra help in a disaster.
