2 Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation Where Healing Hands Lead You Home CNR s innovative and state-of-the-art rehabilitation center treats people of all ages recovering from physical or cognitive disabilities. Its goal is to return individuals to an active, independent lifestyle in the shortest period of time. To achieve this goal, CNR uses a team approach, consisting of physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers and dietitians. This approach has been so successful that, for the last several years, CNR s rate for returning patients to their homes has surpassed state and national averages. And, in further support of the quality care CNR delivers, in an anonymous patient satisfaction survey, CNR scored a perfect 100% in areas ranging from overall services delivered by staff to patients, to staff respect and courtesy, to communication among staff and patients. Speech therapists work with patients to improve their speech and strengthen oral musculature. CARF Recognition Overall, CNR s short-term rehabilitation program delivers excellent results to its patients and has the distinction of being accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, CARF, for Comprehensive Integrated Inpatient Rehabilitation Program. CARF is an international organization recognized for setting standards of quality and outcome-driven rehabilitation services through integrated and individualized programs.

6 Innovative Techniques and Adaptive Devices Assist Stroke and Amputee Patients CNR was the first rehabilitation center in New York City to introduce an interactive computerized virtual rehabilitation exercise program, which allows patients to receive physical and occupational therapy by participating in computerized video games that simulates activities such as race-car driving, drum tapping, or flying in a hot-air balloon. Patients, who view themselves on a large plasma screen during these sessions, have shown to improve their sensory, cognitive and motor skills the three most important steps toward achieving proper and safe prosthetic ambulation performance. For amputee patients, virtual rehabilitation specifically targets balance, coordination, active range of motion exercises, weight bearing and increases patient s awareness of the remaining limb. It also has shown to increase patient confidence and an acceptance of a prosthetic limb. Stroke patients also benefit from virtual rehabilitation sessions because it strengthens their muscles and improves coordination and balance. CNR s short-term rehabilitation program for stroke and leg amputee patients utilizes the latest techniques and equipment to help return patients to an active and independent lifestyle as quickly as possible. Our full-time medical team, including a physiatrist, as well as highlytrained physical, occupational and speech therapists, form our care team. It is this care team that returns 100% of leg amputee patients and 80% of our stroke patients back to the community. State and national averages are 50% and 60% respectively. New Technology Motivates & Encourages Patients And for patients with difficulty getting out of bed, the Total Lift Bed safely and gently tilts the bed to a standing position without any lifting on the part of staff or exertion by the patient. The LiteGait training device, which controls weight bearing, posture and balance, provides patients with a sense of security and builds their confidence as they work on symmetry and shifting weight from one leg to the other. Patients build confidence as they practice walking and shifting weight from one leg to the other.

7 Research Proves Music Therapy Benefits Patients CNR partners with its affiliate, the internationally renowned Institute for Music and Neurologic Function (IMNF) to incorporate music therapy at its rehab center. The music program has rapidly transformed the rehab center into a lively environment where patients are more engaged in their treatment, find their physical and occupational therapy sessions enjoyable and even entertaining. More importantly, clinical music therapy techniques help to meet rehabilitation goals. For instance, using a rhythmic beat to help synchronize movement results in better stride or walking distance. Even some patients who cannot speak following a stroke may be able to sing familiar songs because singing uses different areas of the brain than speech. With all these advances and programs found in CNR s short-term rehabilitation, it s no wonder why 100% of our patients indicated in an anonymous satisfaction survey that they would recommend CNR to their family and friends. Music therapist uses the rhythm of an ocean drum to facilitate the patient s movement and better coordinate his timing.
