4 Our Services At Cleveland Clinic Sports Health, we ve specially designed comprehensive programs both to help you in your sport every day, or to help you recover from a sports injury as quickly and safely as possible. Injury Care & Management Whether lower back pain is affecting your performance or you ve torn your rotator cuff, accurate diagnosis is crucial. Both our medical and surgical specialists use the latest diagnostic technology to evaluate your injury and develop a specialized care plan to return you to your pre-injury performance as quickly as possible. Medical treatments Primary Care Sports Medicine Athletes have special needs. Primary care sports medicine physicians specialize in the nonoperative treatment of medical conditions you may face, including: Acute injuries (sprains; knee, shoulder or other joint injuries; fractures; head injuries) Overuse injuries Concussion evaluation and management Playing sports with a chronic medical condition (such as diabetes or heart disease) Sport-specific Rehabilitation There s a difference between an injury and a sports injury. That difference is you, the athlete. Cleveland Clinic Rehabilitation and Sports Therapy will help you get back into your game as soon as safely possible. Cleveland Clinic is the leader in Sports Health with a proven, comprehensive program for professional, collegiate, scholastic and recreational athletes. Our sports physical therapists specialize in treating muscle, tendon and bone injuries using a biomechanical assessment and treatments to rapidly restore your function. Our physical therapists work with a team of athletic trainers, physical therapy assistants, exercise physiologists and strength and conditioning specialists to create individualized, high-quality programs. Services provided include: Comprehensive physical therapy evaluations Individualized functional exercise programs Manual and soft tissue therapy treatment to restore range of motion and strength Sport-specific rehabilitation programs, often including biomechanical video analysis Our team s emphasis is on effectively transitioning both nonoperative and surgical patients from rehabilitation to peak athletic performance. Chiropractic Sports Medicine You can be confident that your Cleveland Clinic primary care sports medicine specialist will recommend nonsurgical care whenever possible. One of the newest nonsurgical approaches, chiropractic sports medicine, has proven effective in treating a wide range of acute and chronic athletic injuries, including: Overuse injuries Shoulder pain and frozen shoulder Peripheral nerve entrapment syndromes Our certified chiropractic sports physician is skilled at identifying problems with body mechanics and eliminating the source of pain without surgical intervention. Integrative Sports Medicine After an injury, every athlete hopes to heal and get back to the game as quickly as possible. Our Sports Health team collaborates with experts from Cleveland Clinic s Center for Integrative Medicine to provide services with a special focus on supporting the body s natural abilities to heal after a sports-related injury or condition, using techniques such as: Sports acupuncture Massage Guided imagery Combined with standard treatments, integrative medicine techniques can help reduce chronic conditions that prevent top-level performance, speed recovery from acute injuries, and enhance and improve conditioning and strength.
5 Surgical treatments Orthopaedic Surgery About 90 percent of all sports injuries are treated nonsurgically. But when surgery is needed, our primary care sports physicians can provide easy access to our orthopaedic surgeons for help for both overuse or traumatic injuries, including: Torn ligaments and tendons Broken bones Damaged cartilage Arthritis and other degenerative conditions Our surgeons use minimally invasive techniques (such as arthoroscopic surgery) whenever possible to minimize pain, scarring and recovery time. Sports Performance Whether you re a competitive athlete or someone who wants increased fitness, we have Performance Training Systems (PTS) to help. Our professionally trained and credentialed Cleveland Clinic Sports Health staff work closely with you to meet your goals. With PTS, you receive training that is backed by evidencebased research to maximize results. Personalized training plans to improve sports performance, focused on strength and conditioning, speed and agility, or endurance building Nutritional guidance and/or meal plans Fitness/performance assessments, metabolic testing Performance strength and conditioning camps Football strength and conditioning performance program design and consultation services for coaches
