Each student will develop prototypes for new products and services, prepare the market launch, work on the organizational structure of the venture and complete a business plan for his/her project. The project work is structured in two phases: During the team project you will develop a minimum viable product with your assigned team in the class. This phase is focused on the learning experience. In the second phase (the individual project) the focus lies on business modeling and development. During this phase, you will be paired with a project advisor from Unternehmer- TUM. He/she will be the first point of contact and support you in driving forward your innovation or startup project. This trip will give insights into the entrepreneurial culture of the Silicon Valley, where some of the greatest innovations in the world were created. You will learn how the venture capital industry works and what to consider when dealing with venture capitalists. Two days of startup and company visits will provide the ideal setting for practical case studies. At the end of your stay you will pitch a project to a panel of investors and venture capitalists and gain valuable feedback for future steps. Nowadays companies and startups operate in highly competitive markets. In order to survive, they have to be innovative and realize new business. UnternehmerTUM s Business Design approach supports you in identifying, developing and realizing sustainable business. It uses proven principles of design and strategic management to open up new perspectives and give answers to questions that may not yet even have been asked supporting you and your team in developing a more target-oriented and profound commitment to your project. Whatever impulse you will get for an innovation or a startup may it be a new technology or simply a gut feeling about market needs a huge field of unknowns makes it difficult to validate entrepreneurial opportunities. If you are looking to expand an existing business or set up a new one, you will need to identify these unknowns and find ways of dealing with them as quickly as possible. This is where methodologies from the world of design can help. Business Design helps you find answers quickly and cost-efficiently. 8 INNOVATION AND STARTUP PROJECTS Project Cases Individual Innovation and Startup Advisory Christian Doll worked at Siemens IT Solutions and Services while he was joining our EMBA program. His idea was to develop a business concept for Siemens that aimed at engaging and managing external service providers throughout customer project lifecycles. We took advantage of the innovation processes and tools recommended by our project advisors. Methods like mood-boards, storytelling, brainstorming and especially the use of prototypes as an integrated innovation approach worked extremely well together. Most of the methods Christian applied were new to Siemens, especially the 3D LEGO prototype, which helped him and his team to work out and present the main ideas of the new business concept. Prototypes of this kind are incredibly effective in making abstract and virtual concepts transparent and understandable to all the important stakeholders. This approach allowed Christian to come up with a detailed model in only five months using just half a man-year of a team of eight employees. We generated several new ideas and most of them were implemented by three different departments within Siemens IT Solutions and Services. Catharina van Delden is founder and CEO of innosabi. Innosabi uses Web 2.0 technologies to enable active cooperation between companies and their customers in the early phases of product development. This is how new products and services can be brought to market with a higher rate of success. The learnings and tools from the Executive MBA in Innovation and Business Creation have been a major success factor in innosabi s development. The program helped me to make our whole business concept way more scalable. We developed our company from a consulting business to a technology driven business. Founded in December 2010, innosabi already looks back on successful product and service developments for companies like Coty Beauty, Continental, Messe München and LIDL. In 2011, it was named the best German ITC startup by the German Ministry of Economics and Technology. By the end of 2013, innosabi launched two new platforms to support B2B and B2C innovation processes and is already working on the next projects. Four years after her graduation, the EMBA program is still influencing Catharina s work: The connections I made have proven invaluable: I still profit from the networks I formed and from the frequent exchange with my fellow classmates and other alumni. Jan Philipp Hinrichs is founder and CEO of Captcha- Ad. CaptchaAd is the first company to combine enhanced spam protection with interactive video advertising in order to increase website security, facilitate the user s visit and ensure a more conscious perception of advertising by the user. Captcha- Ad invented this kind of spam protection and captcha advertising. The technology is patent pending. I wanted to prepare CaptchaAd for the diverse challenges that lie ahead and for continued business development, while at the same time developing myself on a personal level, says Jan Philipp describing what he hoped the MBA would help him achieve. The program s Business Design approach supported him with its structure and system while his project advisor reflected with him on the different areas of the CaptchaAd business model. They reflected on the strategic development of CaptchaAd focused on important skills for the future, next strategic steps and other issues. They also considered how the company might grow over the coming years and what markets CaptchaAd could enter. During his time at the Executive MBA program, Jan Philipp gained seed funding for CaptchaAd, also thanks to the communication strategies he had developed in the numerous Unternehmer- TUM workshops and courses on pitching. Lively discussions and exchanges with other students, business founders and entrepreneurs really helped me evaluate and implement some important strategic decisions, he says. Every innovation and startup project is different and needs individual support. During the project work you will be paired with a project advisor, who will be your first point of contact for questions about your individual innovation or startup project. All project advisors are experienced experts from UnternehmerTUM the Center for Innovation and Business Creation at TUM. They have wide-ranging ex perience in building up young companies as well as market expertise and additional skills in strategy, finance, product and service development, marketing, sales and HR. The project advisors have worked on innovation projects with a large network of industry partners (including many DAX-listed corporations) for a number of years.
