1 BEOC Experience Applicants Guide to SUNY-BEOC s Enrollment Process Mission: The State University of New York Brooklyn Educational Opportunity Center (SUNY-BEOC) is a higher education institution that has provided academic and career training programs to eligible New Yorker s since BEOC offers tuition free training to adult and young adult learners of New York to enhance their marketable skills and, thus, increase their chances for employability. 2 This enrollment guide will get you started on the road to becoming a BEOC student and to create pathways that will strengthen your skills to achieve higher educational and career goals. It also includes important information each applicant should know. 3 To be Considered for BEOC 18 years of age or older (17 with high school diploma or GED) United States Citizen, Permanent Resident or Refugee Resident of New York State for one (1) year prior to enrolling Low to moderate income (see income guidelines) Note: Individuals with greater than 12 college credits or college degree are not eligible for this program. ATTENDANCE BEOC students are required to have: 100% attendance during the first seven (7) days of the semester 90% attendance throughout the semester CLASS SCHEDULE Day classes are held: Monday Friday between 9:00AM and 5:00PM Evening classes are held: Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 6:00PM to 9:30PM Books are important in the learning process. BEOC students are required to make a book deposit or purchase books before the start of the semester. Textbook Options: TEXTBOOK POLICY 1. GED, ESOL, and Career Students $50.00 Book Deposit (refundable)* Purchase books on-line or from private vendor (prices may vary) 2. College Prep Students Purchase books from BEOC $50-$100 per semester (non-refundable) Purchase books on-line, NYCCT bookstore or private vendor (prices may vary) *Deposits will be refunded upon completion of program or officially withdrawn from BEOC. In addition, some programs may have additional supplies or supplemental material costs

4 ACADEMIC PROGRAMS English Speakers of Other Languages This course assist students in improving their English language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) to facilitate their entry into the job market, the Advanced English course, and other mainstream BEOC courses. ESOL students must show improvement in English language and academic progress. ESOL WANY Below 3.0 Evening classes 45 Weeks Fall and Spring ESOLINT 3.0 Reading Evening classes 30 Weeks Fall and Spring ESOLADV 6.0 Reading Evening classes 15 Weeks Fall and Spring GED Preparation This program offers adults who have not graduated from high school the opportunity to prepare for the General Education Development (GED) Examination and to demonstrate the attainment of the skills and knowledge normally acquired through completion of a high school program of study. GED students are expected to take and pass the Official GED Test. BK-GEDB 6.0 R/ 6.0 M Day & Evening 45 Weeks Fall and Spring BK-GEDPRE 7.0 R/ 7.0 M Day & Evening 30 Weeks Fall and Spring BK-GEDP 9.0 R/ 8.0 M Day & Evening 15 Weeks Fall and Spring College Preparation The College Preparation program is designed to help individuals acquire skills and knowledge necessary to successfully complete college courses. In this program, students learn to improve reading and writing skills, learn strategies to become stronger readers, enhance their skills, advance their critical thinking abilities, refresh and expand their math knowledge, become computer savvy, learn how to negotiate the academic environment at the college level, and prepare to pass CUNY Assessment Tests (CAT). 5 CAREER PROGRAMS Medical Assisting The Medical Assisting program prepares students for the administrative duties and the clinical responsibilities of a medical assistant. The program prepares students in administering EKG/ECG, handling phlebotomy duties, performing first aid functions, assisting in medical procedures, preparing patients for examinations, and assisting in medication administration. This program leads to national certification. BK-MEDASST 9.0 R/ 7.0 M Day classes 30 Weeks Fall and Spring Medical Electronic Records & Office Administration The increasing use of electronic health records (EHR) will broaden and alter job responsibilities of Medical E-Records specialists who oversee management and administration of patients medical records. The Medical E-Records and Office Administration Program prepares students for medical office administrative duties with a focus on proper procedures in collecting, storing, organizing, and retrieving of medical and health records using latest EHR technology. This program leads to national certification. BK-MEDEREC 9.0 R/ 7.0 M Day classes 30 Weeks Fall and Spring Hospitality Management Hospitality Operations and Management is a job training program in Food and Beverage Management, Lodging, Recreation, and Travel and Tourism. Participants in this program must be highly motivated/job-oriented individuals. They are expected to seek internship placement while enrolled in the program and employment upon completion. This program leads to national certification. BK-HOSP 9.0 R/ 9.0 M Evening classes 15 Weeks Fall and Spring CAREER PATHWAYS SET (Skills & Employment Training) This program includes essential computer proficiency, English communication skills, and workplace mathematics. The program addresses not only the need of individuals but also the needs of applicants who must improve their English and Math skills to qualify for a BEOC career program. Upon successful completion of this program, students may apply for admission into a BEOC career program. BK-SKILLS 7.0 R/ 7.0 M Day & Evening 15 Weeks Fall and Spring - 5 -

6 STEPS TO ENROLL All new applicants are required to complete the following steps: 1. HOW TO APPLY o Submit On-line Admissions Application ( o Supplemental Application (Print on-line and bring to the enrollment session) 2. ENROLLMENT SESSION Attend required enrollment session. Applicants must bring copies of all required documentation to the session. (see page 7) 3. PLACEMENT TEST (TABE) All applicants are required to take the TABE Test. Note: College Prep applicants with CUNY scores are not required to take TABE Test. 4. BEOC ELIGIBILITY LETTER Applicants will receive a letter or notice of BEOC eligibility status once your file is complete. Note: Eligibility status means you are eligible for BEOC services. (see step 5) 5. ADVISEMENT SESSION If BEOC eligible, applicant must attend required advisement session. Final service/program placement will be determined at this time. 6. REGISTRATION/NOTIFICATION Applicants will receive a letter or notice of final admissions decision and placement status. Check your U.S. mail and

7 BEOC ACCEPTABLE DOCUMENTATION Married applicants must provide income information for self and spouse. You must provide a copy of 1040 Federal Tax Return, if filed, along with a current unemployment benefit, child support or worker s compensation, etc. Applicants under 22 years of age must show proof of support from parents if they cannot demonstrate self-sufficiency. W-2 Forms or paystubs are NOT ACCEPTABLE. ALL DOCUMENTS BECOME PROPERTY OF SUNY-BEOC Applicants should provide photocopies of one (1) document from EACH of the sections below. INCOME: Federal 1040 Tax Return (2011) Unemployment or worker s compensation Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Benefits print out IRS Form 4506-NON-FILERS Documentation from county department of social services (e.g. HRA Budget letter, Children Services) EDUCATION: High School Diploma (HSD) or Transcript CUNY ACT Scores and HSD or GED required for college prep applicants Official GED Diploma or Test Scores Dismissal Letter (from College or University; for College Prep applicants ONLY) IDENTIFICATION: New York State Driver s License or Non-Driver s ID 1 New York State Benefit Card with Photo ID Permanent Resident Card 2 US Passport IMPORTANT: 1 A New York State Driver s License or Non-Driver s ID serves as Identification and New York State Residency 2 All permanent residents must submit a copy of Permanent Resident Card NEW YORK STATE RESIDENCY: New York State Motor Vehicle registration Proof of ownership of New York State real property Lease for property in New York State New York State Tax Return (2011) PLEASE REMEMBER PAYSTUBS AND W-2 FORMS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE DOCUMENTATION!
