New York City College of Technology Counseling Services Center A Guide for Dealing with Dismissal from City Tech
Important Dates: Appeal Deadlines for Dismissed Students August 7, 2008 (12 noon) for Fall 08 (enrolled and non-enrolled students) January 9, 2009 (12 noon) for Spring 09 (enrolled students)
What will you learn here? The Reasons Students are Dismissed from City Tech The Dismissal Appeal Process Alternatives for Continuing an Education Outside of City Tech.
The Counseling Services Center Room Namm Counselors are available to meet individually with students to review their educational goals as well as answer questions regarding the dismissal and appeal process.
Students are not dismissed from City Tech if they: passed the developmental courses (remedial or ESL classes) by the second attempt. achieve an acceptable Grade Point Average (GPA)
Reasons for Dismissal 1. Failure to attain the required cumulative grade point average (see Student Handbook, pg. 18) Credits Minimum Cum Attempted GPA Required over Failure to advance from any developmental (remedial or ESL) class after two attempts (see Student Handbook, pp. 17, 18)

Appealing Your Dismissal Students are given the opportunity to request reinstatement to the college by completing a Committee on Course and Standards Appeal Form (see counseling web site for form). These forms can also be obtained through the Registrar s office NG 15 or Counseling Services Namm 108
A copy of this form can be found in the Counseling Centers Web Site.
Be sure to complete the bottom portion on the back of the Appeal form neatly (mailing label for response).
Important Dates: Appeal Deadlines for Dismissed Students August 7, 2008 (12 noon) for Fall 08 (enrolled and non-enrolled students) January 9, 2009 (12 noon) for Spring 09 (enrolled students)
Summer USIP Classes Can Correct Dismissal Status (Remedial Students only) If you are dismissed only for failing the same remedial course twice, you may be eligible to enroll in a Summer USIP express course. If you pass, you will be allowed to enroll in the Fall. All students must be approved by their instructor in order to take this course.
Important Points for Completing a Dismissal Appeal Form Demonstrate that you know why you were dismissed (low GPA, failing remedial course twice) and what class you must pass and/or the GPA you need to succeed at City Tech. Explain any unusual circumstances that kept you from doing well, e.g. illness (attach documentation that must be in English)
Important Points (Cont.) Explain what you d do differently if accepted back to City Tech. If possible include a letter of recommendation from a faculty member who knows you, or your academic department chairperson. List courses you plan to repeat (D s, F s and WU s repeated with a C or higher improve your GPA, up to 16 credits).
Important Points for Filing an Appeal (Cont.) The best way to regain entry into the college is to do well at another educational setting. If you ve done this, provide documentation of the courses you ve completed (ie. Transcript) WU grades (unofficial withdrawal) have the same weight as an F grade on your GPA. If you want to appeal this grade, changing it to a W (official withdrawal) check this area off on the appeal form and provide supporting evidence.
What can you do if the Committee rejects your appeal? Attend any of these programs depending on your needs. Brooklyn Educational Opportunity Center College Language Immersion Program New Start Program- Kingsborough Community College Other CUNY Community (Two-year) College (eligible after one semester of non-college attendance) Register as a Non-Matriculated (non-degree) student at City Tech (explained on later slide)
If you are dismissed solely for failing a remedial course, once you pass the CUNY ACT through another college or program you do not need to file a dismissal appeal form, you can enroll in CITY TECH courses. See the Registrar or counseling (N108) for help.
Brooklyn Educational Opportunity Center (BEOC) Attend this program if you were dismissed only for failing a remedial class but your GPA is over 2.0. At the completion of this program you will be able to take the CUNY ACT. If you pass, you can be readmitted to the college without having to file an appeal form. 111 Livingston Street (Enter at Boerum Place) (718) [email protected] Administered by the New York City College of Technology CUNY

Once students complete the program they may be eligible to take the CUNY ACT and re-enter City Tech, if they pass.
Important Point: Kingsborough Community College Is the Only Community College City Tech Students Can Attend During Their First Semester Following Their Dismissal. New Start Program (718) COLLEGE
Kingsborough Community College New Start Program For more information about the NEW START PROGRAM, go to then type New Start in the search box. To request an application: 1.Call 718-COLLEGE or Visit the Admissions Information Center (A.I.C.) at Kingsborough, Room F-123

After completing courses at another college, students may re-appeal their City Tech dismissal.
Other Community Colleges? You can apply to any CUNY community college. However, you will not be allowed to attend for the first semester dismissed from City Tech. Kingsborough CC is your only CUNY College option the first semester out of City Tech. Call the Colleges directly to obtain the application information. CUNY Community Colleges: Borough of Manhattan CC: 199 Chambers St. (212) Bronx CC: West 181 st St. & University Ave. (718) Hostos CC: 120 East 149 th St. & Walton Ave., Bronx (877) 2 HOSTOS LaGuardia CC: Thomson Ave., Long Island City (718) Queensborough CC: Springfield Blvd & 56 th Ave., Bayside (718)
Non-Degree Status It may be possible to register for classes at City Tech as a non-degree student (non Matriculated), taking courses to improve your GPA. You must be CUNY certified in Reading, Writing and Math to participate. Once your GPA reaches acceptable standards (typically a 2.0 ) you can return to degree seeking status. Grades earned as a non-degree student become part of the cumulative grade point average only after a Review of Records which must be requested through the Registrar (NG15)
Non Degree Status (Cont) Non-degree students are not eligible for financial aid, are billed at a higher per-credit rate ($250), and are no longer considered enrolled in their major. Students must reapply as a non-degree student each semester and once their GPA is acceptable, they need to change their status back to degree seeking (Matriculated Status). To change to non-degree status, talk to your academic department first. There may be courses that can only be taken as a degree seeking student. After speaking with your academic department, complete the necessary forms with the Admissions Office in NG 17. There is no limit on the number of semesters one can enroll under a non degree status.
Thanks for reviewing this information. If you have questions please meet with a counselor in Namm 108
