1 Inver Hills Community College Policies Policy Name: Admission Policy Policy Number: 3.4 Author: Landon K. Pirius Authority: MnSCU Board Policy 3.4 and Procedure Policy Custodian: Management Team Effective Date: August 2011 Last Review Date: 2009 Next Review Date: Fall Semester 2013 Groups Affected: All Distribution Plan (identify audience/publications): All to campus faculty and staff. All to students. College catalog. College website. Policy and procedure review website. Part 1. Policy Statement: Inver Hills Community College considers all applicants for admission regardless of age, race, sex, color, religion, sexual orientation, disability, or national origin. The college follows an open door admission policy, which means that any person who has graduated from an accredited high school successfully completed a General Educational Development (GED) examination, or who can demonstrate an Ability to Benefit is eligible for admission. Inver Hills Community College has taken steps to assure that lack of English skills will not pose a barrier to participating in the application, admissions, and enrollment process. These include provisions for communicating with enrollment center and counseling personnel, a well-defined information and referral process, and the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program. Part 2. Policy Procedures: Subpart A. Regular admission Regular admission is intended for those who wish to complete more than eight credits each semester and is designed for degree-seeking, eventual transfer, or undecided students. Students who complete all of the following admission steps, will be able to attend an orientation and register for classes. 1. Complete and submit the online application for admission along with a one-time $20 application fee. A paper application is available on request only. 2. Complete the Inver Hills assessment inventory in reading and mathematics after receiving confirmation that Inver Hills has processed the application for admission. 3. Submit copies of the high school transcript or GED certificate. Students who have graduated from an accredited high school within the last five years should request that official high school transcripts be sent directly to the Inver Hills Enrollment Center (GED recipients should submit a copy of the certificate). Students coming from high schools that participate in Docufide (electronic transcript delivery), can have transcripts delivered to Inver Hills electronically. If the student's high school does not participate in

2 Docufide, transcripts shall be delivered in paper form. High school transcripts are not required for students who graduated from high school or received a GED more than five years ago. 4. Applicants who did not graduate from high school or complete the GED may still be admitted if they demonstrate an Ability to Benefit. An applicant may demonstrate an Ability to Benefit by completing the Inver Hills assessment inventory and placing into developmental or college-level courses. 5. Submit official transcripts of previous college work. Transcripts are required if the student (1) is applying for financial aid or veterans benefits or (2) wants to have credits evaluated for transfer to Inver Hills or for course equivalencies. Students with college math or English composition completed have the option of submitting transcripts instead of taking assessment tests. Official transcripts shall be submitted to the Enrollment Center in sealed envelopes from all institutions attended. Official transcripts from MnSCU institutions are received electronically and do not need to be sent in paper form. Although transcripts are not required for Regular Admission, students are strongly encouraged to submit them for academic advising purposes. Admission to the college does not automatically qualify a student for all college-level courses. Some of the course offerings in both career and transfer programs have special prerequisites and requirements. Subpart B. Application deadline The application deadline is ten (10) days prior to the start of the semester. Applications received after the application deadline will be processed for the following semester. Subpart C. Denied admission Applicants who are denied admission can petition to the Director of Enrollment Services. Petitions are submitted to the Enrollment Center. Applicants who have their petitions denied may appeal that decision to a three person appeals committee. Appeals are submitted to the Enrollment Center. The decision of the three person appeals committee is final. Subpart D. Post secondary enrollment options (PSEO) admissions Qualified high school juniors and seniors in Minnesota are eligible to attend Inver Hills through the Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) program. Placement into English 1108 on Inver Hills Assessment Inventory.
