Included within this course are signed numbers, positive and negative exponents, order of operations, conversions in fractions, decimals and percents, algebraic expressions, factoring, polynomials, slope, graphing, linear equations and inequalities and applications. Equivalent to one year of high school algebra. NEXT COURSE IN SEQUENCE MATH 0123 (Intermediate Algebra) TRANSFERABILITY Please visit with the TCC Counseling Center or the Counseling Center at the college or university to which you plan to transfer to determine transferability status of this course. TEXTBOOK AND OTHER MATERIALS Textbook: Algebra Foundations, TCC SE Campus custom Edition, Elayn-Martin Gay, Publisher- Prentice Hall. ISBN NOTE- If you took Basic Math or Beginning Algebra on TCC Southeast campus in fall 2011 or later, this is the same textbook and MyMathLab as you used for those courses. You will NOT need to purchase a new book. MyLabsPlus Student Access Kit (contains an e-book version of the textbook)) Again, if you took basic math or beginning algebra on TCC Southeast Campus fall 2011 or later, and used MyMathLab, you do not need to purchase a new license. You will need your login information from Basic Math or Beginning Algebra. This access kit is REQUIRED! 1

2 Scientific or Graphing Calculator (you may check these out from the math lab) - a scientific or graphing calculator is required. TI-83 or TI-84 plus are the preferred graphing calculators, TI 30X is my preferred scientific calculator. You will need to bring pencil and paper to every class. You will also need a computer with internet access. If you do not have one at home, you have access to the computer lab at any TCC campus. One 2" three ring binder is required for this course. Any color is fine. GENERAL EDUCATION GOAL STATEMENT The General Education Goals are designed to ensure that graduates of Tulsa Community College have the skills, knowledge, and attitudes to carry them successfully through their work and their personal lives. General Education Goals relevant to this course include: Critical Thinking; Effective Communication; Engaged Learning; Technological Proficiency. COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, students with proper prerequisites should be able to understand and apply the following concepts: 1. Perform the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with signed numbers. 2. Apply properties of real numbers and the order of operations. 3. Understand and use appropriate mathematical terminology. 4. Perform algebraic operations with real numbers. 5. Solve linear equations and quadratic equations (by factoring). 6. Solve application problems by using equations and inequalities in one variable. 7. Graph linear equations. 8. Add, subtract, multiply and divide polynomials. 9. Factor polynomials. When you enrolled for this course you were automatically enrolled in our Blackboard course site. To access Blackboard you can select Blackboard from the top of TCC s website or use You log into the site using your campus wide ID (CWID) and password. If you have any questions, call the help desk at (During the semester I will post grades on our Blackboard course site. At the end of the semester your course grade will be posted on our Blackboard site and TED. ) Our primary course site will be on MyLabsPlus at The registration information will be given in class and posted on Blackboard. Homework assignments and tests will be completed on MyLabsPlus. The Login and password and access codes are different than they were for MyMathLab, so if you have never used MyLabsPlus before, you will need to see me to get a new access code. TEACHING METHODS Class will consist of informal lecture with discussion, examples, and opportunities to practice problems and ask questions through cooperative learning activities. Class feedback, participation, and questions are expected from all students. 2

3 EVALUATION TECHNIQUES You will determine your grade by the number of points you earn. Grading will be based on the following points: Homework 200 In-Class Activities and Participation (Binder) 200 Chapter Tests 300 Final Exam 100 TOTAL 800 Grade: DA DB DC DD DF Points: MAKE-UP POLICY HOMEWORK: Paper homework will be due at the beginning of class on the assigned due date. Online homework will be due at midnight on the assigned due date. See blackboard and MyLabsPlus for homework due dates. Late homework will be accepted up to one week after the due date for half credit. No homework will be accepted more than one week past the due date. IN_CLASS ACTIVITIES: No late work accepted. In class activities are to be placed in your binder and are to be handed in on the day of the exam for that chapter or section. Specific information about what is to be in your binders will be explained in class. CHAPTER TESTS: Upon request and instructor s consent, the exam may be taken prior to the regularly scheduled time. If an exam is missed, you will receive a grade of zero. I will drop your lowest chapter test score before figuring final grades. FINAL EXAM: If there is a scheduling conflict, your instructor must be informed at least 1 week prior to the scheduled final exam. HOMEWORK A significant portion of our homework will be done using the MyLabsPlus package that came with your textbook. Please log into MyLabsPlus frequently to check for assignments and due dates. We will also have paper assignments that will be due at the beginning of class on the assigned date. Paper assignments will be posted on blackboard. All paper assignments must be stapled together and be labeled with the assignment number, due date, and full name of the student. You are responsible for keeping up with due dates on MyLabsPlus and Blackboard. IN CLASS ACTIVITIES During class you will receive worksheets or assignments to complete with the help of fellow classmates. This is important for your success and the success of your classmates to learn Beginning Algebra. You may be asked to present your results on the whiteboard or turn in your work at the end of class. Your work will also be placed in your binder and turned in on the day of the chapter exam for that section. It is your responsibility to keep track of in-class assignments. CHAPTER TESTS The four chapter tests will be taken on campus during class on the dates listed in the course calendar. Each test will be worth 100 points. Scratch paper will be provided for you to show your work. No books or notes may be used on the tests. You may use a calculator. 3

4 FINAL EXAM There will be a comprehensive final exam for this course, worth 100 points. You may not use your own books, notes, or scratch paper during this exam. Calculators may not be shared during this exam. WITHDRAWAL POLICY Withdrawing from the class is the responsibility of the student. To withdraw from the class, the student must initiate an official withdrawal through the counseling office. After the second week of class the student who neither participates nor drops the class will receive the grade earned based on the work completed; non-participation does not constitute official withdrawal. Failure to withdraw may result in the student receiving a grade of F at the end of the semester. No incomplete grade will be issued for this course. Withdrawal or change to an audit after the drop/add period can alter the financial aid award for the current and future semesters. Students may receive an outstanding bill from TCC if the recalculation leaves a balance due to TCC. The last date to withdraw or change from credit to audit for the FALL 2014 session is Friday, November 7, ADMINISTRATIVE WITHDRAWAL FOR NON-PARTICIPATION If a student does not attend a course or participate in a course by the end of the refund period the student will be issued a FINAL GRADE of AW for the course, and will be responsible for tuition and fees. To receive a refund, the student must officially withdraw by the end of the refund period. The refund period for a 16 week course is the end of the second week of classes. ATTENDANCE You are encouraged to attend class regularly and be on time. Poor attendance has a negative effect upon your grade. Students who are absent from class are responsible for obtaining information and handouts given in the missed class session. We will spend a significant portion of our class time on cooperative learning and in class activities, so absences will reflect strongly in your final grade. CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE This is a college level course; therefore, your behavior is expected to reflect accordingly. Your cell phone or other electronic devices should not be used during class unless required for an assignment. Please do not leave the classroom except in case of an emergency. Comments and language should be respectful and appropriate for a college community. No drinks other than bottled water are permitted in classrooms. Please do not bring your children to class. Unenrolled children are not permitted in TCC classrooms per campus regulations. Please do not use the classroom computers for personal use during class time. 5 INCLEMENT WEATHER AND CLASS CANCELLATION POLICY TCC will be open for classes unless it is announced otherwise through TCC Alerts, television or radio stations. TCC Alerts is a mass notification system used by the College to notify students and employees of critical incidents or weather related emergencies. You can register for TCC Alerts in your MyTCC Account. Look for the TCC Alerts tab. Please note that if you were previously registered for TCC Alerts, you need to reregister for this semester. TOBACCO POLICY (NO SMOKING ON TCC PROPERTY) Tulsa Community College actively promotes the health and well-being of its students, faculty, staff, and administrators. Numerous Federal studies demonstrate a correlation between tobacco use and health concerns. Therefore, in compliance with Executive Order by the Governor of the State of Oklahoma, Tulsa Community College prohibits the use of any tobacco products on all college-owned, leased, or contracted property, including but not limited to all buildings, land and vehicles owned, leased or contracted for use by Tulsa Community College.
