The State Leadership Conference management team has been hard at work getting ready for this event, which has a rich history of preparing students for the skills workforce, who are the solution to Americas skills gap. Competitor s congratulations on! On earning the right to compete at the state level, we wish you all the best. You are in the top ten percent of all SkillsUSA Virginia membership, job well done. 6 OBSERVER RULES Observer Rules Please contact the contest official immediately if you observe any unsafe practices. 1. It is in the spirit of competition and good sportsmanship to demonstrate professional courtesy to other competitors. Observers and advisors shall in no way disrupt or interfere with the work or performance of contestants or teams. Any contestant or team found to be in violation of this regulation may be at the risk of penalty or, in the case of a serious violation, disqualification. 2. During the contest, participants must work independently, without assistance from judges, teachers, fellow students, or observers. Contestants will be disqualified for receiving such assistance. 3. A roped or otherwise marked area will be designated for observers. No observers, including SkillsUSA advisors, will enter the designated contest areas without the approval of the SkillsUSA State Student Specialist or contest chairman. 4. No observer will talk or gesture to contestants. 5. No observer will be permitted in the contest holding room or at the contest orientation meeting unless specifically invited by the SkillsUSA State Student Specialist or contest chairman. 6. Additional limitations on observers, such as entering or leaving a contest area during a demonstration or sequence, may be posted to protect contestants from unnecessary distractions. 7. The technical committee chair may close the contest to observers if observers are seen to be communicating or aiding a contestant in any way or if safety demands such action. 8. Neither cameras nor recording devices of any kind will be permitted in any contest area without the consent of SkillsUSA Virginia Student Specialist or contest chairman. 9. No chairs, for observers, will be allowed in the aisle way of the contest area. This is a rule by the local Fire Marshal. 6

18 PDP & WORLDSKILLS Professional Development Program: American Degree SkillsUSA s Professional Development Program (PDP) helps students develop the skills they need to make a smooth transition to the workforce or higher education. The program guides students through employability skill activities. PDP Level 5, the American Degree, may be earned after completing PDP levels one through five. Candidates for the American Degree prepare and present a portfolio, take a knowledge test, and are interviewed. 19 AWARDS Lifetime Achievement Award The Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest honor that a SkillsUSA Virginia member may earn. It is awarded to those who have served SkillsUSA Virginia members for a number of years, gone above and beyond for the good of SkillsUSA Virginia members, and who have made significant efforts on behalf of SkillsUSA Virginia. This award is presented by past recipients. Please join me in thanking and congratulating our Lifetime Achievement Award recipients Dr. Richard L. Ross 2013 Mr. Roger Johnson Hall of Honor The adjudicated Hall of Honor award is bestowed to people who have made a SIGNIFICANT contribution towards the advancement of SkillsUSA Virginia. Recipients of this honor can include professional members, business, industry members and alumni members. Nominations are received each year. Advisor of the Year The Pat Richard Advisor of the Year award is given to recognize and honor the dedicated career and technical education instructors who serve as SkillsUSA advisors.
