6 The Open University of Hong Kong BBA (Hons) in Professional Accounting THE OPEN UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) is established and recognised by the Government. It has four Schools Arts and Social Sciences, Lee Shau Kee Business and Administration, Science and Technology, and Education and Languages offering degree programmes in a number of areas, including social sciences, business administration, computing, applied science, education and languages. Currently, there are over 6,000 students taking programmes on a full-time basis in the University s campus. In addition, undergraduate degree programmes in a range of disciplines are offered jointly with partnership institutions. PROGRAMME OVERVIEW This 18-month programme is offered by the OUHK in collaboration with SHAPE of VTC. Since the first intake in 2005, there are more than 1,800 students enrolled in this programme. Students can enjoy campus facilities of both OUHK and SHAPE, including computer laboratories, libraries and sports facilities. This programme is designed to provide theoretical and practical knowledge and skills in various aspects of accounting for students who wish to pursue their careers in accounting and business. Upon successful completion of the degree, students should be able to: demonstrate a broad knowledge of the various aspects of business administration; apply knowledge of business administration to analysing and formulating management policy and strategy of an organisation; communicate information effectively; discuss the regulatory framework of accounting, and the environment in which accounting information is used by relevant stakeholders; analyse the underlying theories of modern accounting and the conceptual framework of accounting in solving unstructured problems in accounting or business; understand and comply with laws that govern conducts of corporations and related accounting practices in Hong Kong; apply management accounting and financial management techniques in solving business problems; comply with the taxation laws that are applicable to individuals and corporations in Hong Kong; discuss the nature and objectives and comply with the procedures of audit practice in Hong Kong; apply accounting information system concepts and techniques in analysing and handling complicated business decisions; and act ethically as members of the Hong Kong business community. EXTERNAL RECOGNITION The programme has been accredited by the Hong Kong Institute of Public Accountants (HKICPA) as an approved accountancy degree programme. Graduates of the programme are entitled to exemptions for up to a maximum of nine papers (out of 14) of the Association of Chartered Accountants (ACCA) examinations. They are also entitled to exemptions of all eight papers at Foundation Level of the CPA Program of CPA Australia. 8 Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Professional Accounting TECHNOLOGICAL AND HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTE OF HONG KONG The Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (THEi) offers innovative vocationally-oriented degree programmes in niche areas across three faculties: Design, Management and Hospitality, and Science and Technology. It is a member institution of the VTC and its programmes are in areas where the VTC is strong, and which respond to the needs of emerging industries. The curriculum combines theoretical knowledge with practical know-how through real-life projects and industrial attachments to produce professionally-competent and work-ready graduates. The industrial attachments are with well-known firms and will be an important step in the search for meaningful jobs. There are also opportunities for overseas study tours to provide the international outlook so valued by employers. These features will provide graduates with a huge advantage in securing jobs in a very competitive labour market. Programmes have been accredited by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications. Many of these have been included in the Government s Study Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions/Sectors, which is further proof of THEi s acceptance by Government and industry. Starting from the 2014 entry, THEi can admit graduates from the relevant higher diploma programmes into the third year of its degree programmes. In addition to the acquisition of professional knowledge, THEi places importance on whole-person development. Its general education curriculum ensures graduates have a positive mindset that can adapt to changes, and strong interpersonal, communication and leadership skills. PROGRAMME OVERVIEW PROGRAMME STRUCTURE The programme aims to equip students with a solid foundation of knowledge and skills in professional accounting that will prepare them to become competent supervisors shortly after graduation, and ultimately to assume managerial roles in professional accounting and related practices. Students will be trained in the areas of accounting, finance, and corporate governance in local, national and global context. The programme also develops students creativity, communication and other generic skills that are necessary to meet the needs and demand of the business environment in Hong Kong and Mainland China. Graduates can expect to take up entry-level positions in professional accounting firms and in business or government operations such as audit, taxation and, management. They are able to perform with short learning curves in the workplace and understand the strategic roles of business with managerial perspectives. After gaining sufficient work experience, they are ready for further progression and managerial roles in their fields such as accounting and corporate finance.
