4 MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION AS A CAREER Job Description Medical transcriptionists are an important part of the health care team. They are responsible for creating accurate, properly structured medical records that are used by doctors, nurses and other health care workers. These electronic medical records play a key role in monitoring and planning the care received by patients. Health practitioners dictate what they have done after performing checkups and procedures on patients. Medical transcriptionists convert that oral dictation into detailed patient records. This work can be done within a hospital, clinic, lab, or doctor's office, and it is also possible to do this work from your own home, working for an internet-based service provider or as an independent contractor. The job may sound simple, but there is a lot to it. A qualified medical transcriptionist needs a solid knowledge of medical terminology in a number of medical specialties, a command of basic anatomy and physiology, excellent grammar and punctuation, and expertise in medical records standards. A transcriptionist must develop outstanding keyboarding speed and accuracy, and must also develop a practiced ear for listening to and understanding the dictation of doctors. Our program teaches you the required knowledge, and develops you into a qualified transcriptionist by exposing you to over 700 actual dictation reports that reinforce that knowledge while you develop your transcription skills. Prospective Student Profile Self-disciplined, productive and committed to schedules Strong command of professional English (listening, reading and writing) Excellent keyboarding skills Comfortable with computers and Microsoft Word Honest and dependable Attentive to details A quick learner Comfortable with change Career Opportunities There is a strong demand for Medical Transcriptionists throughout North America, and with an aging population the need continues to grow. Graduates will have employment opportunities through Service Providers, Private Sector Clinics, Long Term Care Facilities, Community Health Agencies or Associations, Insurance Companies, Hospitals, Doctors' Offices, Medical Clinics and through self employment. Both on-site and at-home employment opportunities are available. A certificate from an institution offering the Career Step curriculum is widely recognized in the industry. 5 There is a growing trend for hospitals, clinics and doctors' offices to contract out Medical Transcription work to service providers and individual contractors who specialize in transcription. The wide availability of high speed internet access has made it possible for this work to be performed by individuals who work from home offices, either as employees of service providers, hospitals or clinics, or as individual entrepreneurs. However, these jobs demand a higher level of Medical Transcription skill than that which is provided by Medical Office Assistant programs, which provide only a small amount of transcription training as part of a general program. Therefore, focused programs such as ours are required to provide the intensive preparation needed for these jobs. Both American and Canadian companies hire or contract with Canadian Medical Transcriptionists. Graduates from the Thompson Career College program may be employed by companies, hospitals, clinics and doctors located anywhere in North America, working from their home offices, using the internet for uploading and downloading work, and for communicating with their employers and clients. Researching the Career Before undertaking any type of career training it is important to do your own research. You should examine the nature of the work, the personal characteristics needed for success, the earning potential, local and online job prospects, and the training needed to succeed. An MT Program Admission Questionnaire must be completed by all potential students. Your ability to source and answer all of the questions contained in this questionnaire will help make your decision about taking the course and becoming an MT clearer. This form will be ed to you along with the all other admission forms after you have an interview with the Admissions Advisor. This is a very important portion of the prerequisite process because the ability to do independent research is one of the most important skills required to be a successful Medical Transcriptionist. Your local hospital, clinics, medical specialists, etc. are excellent places to contact people who can give you information about the career. When you call, ask to talk to the department that takes care of Medical Transcription, and you should be able to get through to the people who work in transcription or who manage the department that does the transcription. Also go to our web site to find information about the career, including a list of links to MT employers, MT job sites, and MT industry associations. These links are very useful when looking for employers to contact, job postings, and general information about Medical Transcription. Look on our site under Medical Transcription / Career Opportunities, or click on this direct link Make sure you visit the web site for the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI). This site provides a great deal of information about the Medical Transcription profession. Go to and click on the become an MT link. 6 Earning Potential Home-Based Medical Transcriptionists How much can you earn as an online Medical Transcriptionist? That varies a lot depending upon the line rate you are paid, and your own productivity and work ethic. This chart will give you an idea of how much home-based transcriptionists can make in a day. The dollar figure is your gross daily income based on lines of transcription completed at different cents per line rates. Cents per line: 100 lines 500 lines 1000 lines 7 cents $7 $35 $70 8 cents $8 $40 $80 10 cents $10 $50 $100 Completing 100 lines may take 1 to 2 hours or more as a new Grad, and minutes as an experienced MT - every MT has their own production rate 500 lines may take 5 to 8 hours as a new Grad, and 2 to 3 hours as an experienced MT 1000 lines may take 10 to 16 hours as a new Grad but only 4 to 6 hours as an experienced MT The nice thing about online work is that if you work more hours and are more productive, you make more money. Your compensation is tied directly to your abilities and your work ethic. However, it is important to understand that it takes TIME and SELF-DISCIPLINE to work your way up to the 1000 lines per day mark. If you go straight from school into the online transcription world, you can expect to work for many months before you get up to these levels. Most new MTs earn far less than experienced online transcriptionists. A skilled, experienced MT usually transcribes 1000 lines per day. Some do more, if the work is available from their employer, or if they have their own contracts with doctors. On Site Medical Transcriptionists Many transcriptionists work for hospitals and medical facilities on a per-hour basis. If local jobs are available this can be the great option for many people. There is a lot to be said for earning a dependable hourly rate while working in an organization where you have experienced transcriptionists to support you as you learn your profession. Hourly rates for on-site transcriptionists vary considerably depending on the province you are in, and whether you are working for a public or private employer. At the high end, a new transcriptionist working in a unionized public sector environment in British Columbia may make over $20 per hour. At the low end, a new transcriptionist in a nonunion environment might make as little as $13 per hour. It is important for you to research the job market in your area and get an idea of the job demand, the hiring criteria, and the starting pay rates.
