1 CAReeR / VOCATiOnAL Continuing Education or MEDICAL OFFICE AssIsTANT CERTIFICATE PROGRAM This program prepares students to work in a wide variety of medical settings as a Medical Office Assistant (MOA). The program is part-time, and classes are during evening hours. Students may take up to two years to complete all of the program requirements. About MOA Services... Patti Scott has owned and operated West Coast MOA Services, with a full team of qualified and industry-experienced instructors, since Patti has worked in the health care field for over twenty years. She has been teaching since 1998 and has her Provincial Instructors Diploma. She is presently working on completing a Bachelors Degree in Adult Education. Patti loves teaching and coordinating MOA courses for Continuing Education throughout the Lower Mainland. Students will be prepared for work directly assisting the physician, or for clerical work in a more administrative capacity. Trained Medical Office Assistants experience diverse employment choices, as the demand for medical services continues to increase due to an aging population. Students may find employment in physicians offices, clinics, public or private hospitals, nursing homes, or community health care facilities. Medical clerical positions are also available in research and care agencies, pharmaceutical firms, medical supply firms and related service businesses. Practice times and speed and accuracy testing is available on an on-going basis. Medical Terminology & Human anatomy 20 sessions CV12 $ This 60-hour, in-depth medical terminology with human anatomy course meets the curriculum standards and prerequisite requirements of most public and private colleges for students entering MOA, Nursing Unit Clerk, Medical Lab Assistant, and other medical related Diploma Programs. The course also prepares you to apply medical terminology in the clinical setting. This course covers anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and common diseases. It is excellent preparation for occupations in hospital departments, such as Admitting and Medical Records, or in clinical settings such as X-ray and Lab, and in medical offices. Persons already working in a hospital or medical related job often use this course as a refresher to brush up on their terminology and understanding of human anatomy. 2 Continuing Education or CAREER / VOCATIONAL Medical Office Procedures CV13 10 sessions $ This comprehensive, hands-on course will cover the main functions of running a medical office. It will cover both administrative tasks and clinical procedures. You will learn medical office appointment scheduling, filing and charting, record-keeping, telephone skills, correspondence, referrals, pharmaceuticals, handling emergencies, and assisting the physician with minor office procedures and surgeries. A Certificate will be issued upon course completion. A $25 text fee is payable at time of registration. Tuesdays, Oct 12-Dec 14 Medical Transcription Level 1 CV14 5 sessions (30 hours) $ This is an introduction to the field of medical transcription. Students will learn how to transcribe dictation from a variety of medical reports, consultation letters, chart notes, lab reports, patient history records, and much more. There will be a focus on editing and skill building. Completion of this valuable course will help you gain employment in medical offices, medical facilities, hospitals, insurance companies, or starting your own home-based medical transcription business. Oct 16-Nov 13 Medical Transcription Level 2 CV15 5 sessions (30 hours) $ This course offers the student an opportunity to deal with dictation in the medical specialties, as well as pharmacology, advanced editing, and tips and tricks to surviving in the transcription field. Upon completion, students will be ready for entry-level transcription positions in hospitals or private transcription companies. Students may also choose to start their own homebased, medical transcription business. A keyboarding speed of 50 wpm net is required in order for students to receive a completion certificate. Oct 16-Nov 13 Computerized Medical Records, Billing & Scheduling CV16 3 sessions $ A working knowledge of computerized medical scheduling, EMR (electronic medical records) and computerized medical billing is essential for anyone seeking employment in a medical office. This is the course you need! You will work with the latest in medical office technology, and get hands-on experience and a working knowledge of the software. A Certificate will be issued upon course completion. Prerequisite: Computer Basics course or equivalent; Medical Office Procedures course, or experience working in a medical office. A $20 text fee is payable to Instructor at first class. Nov 20, 27 & Dec 4 Ethics in Health Care CV17 8 sessions $ This essential course will teach you the professional skills necessary to communicate and work effectively in a medical office or other clinical setting within the health care field. The focus will be on medical ethics, confidentiality, professional responsibility, and communication skills. Oct 14-Dec 9 Job Search For Health CV hr or 2-6 hr sessions $ This course is designed to prepare you for your job search in health care. You will create a customized resume, cover letters, and develop a job search plan. The medical industry is specific and you will learn the unique interview skills required to navigate this industry. This course will review basic math functions as used in the health care industry, and then move on to general accounting, the metric system, measurement applications and dose conversions, with an introduction to statistics and graphing. This course would be extremely valuable for anyone considering a career within a Hospital or Extended Care Facility, including Nursing, LPN, Rehab Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, etc. A $65 text fee for textbook, Math Skills For Health Professionals, is payable at time of registration. Tuesdays, Oct 5-Dec 7 english skills For Health CV hr sessions $ This course is designed to prepare students for communication that occurs in the health care environment. Basic English and grammar skills are covered and practiced. Students will gain knowledge and confidence with basic communication skills required for health care workers. This is not an ESL course, but is designed to accelerate English writing skills commonly used in health care. A $ text fee is payable at time of registration. Oct 7-Dec 16 MOa Practicum CV22 60 hours (minimum) $ (fee waived for full program students) A working practicum in a medical office of 60 hours minimum is a requirement for students receiving the Medical Office Assistant Certificate. Students taking a number of individual MOA Program courses, but not the full program, may still arrange to complete a medical office practicum. Private Practice MOa Upgrade Course CV23 10 sessions $595 (includes all materials) This course is intended for persons who have completed a Medical Office Assistant Program and wish to upgrade their knowledge and skills for the private health care work environment. You will learn the differences between public and private health care. Private health care is a fast growing industry. Private health care includes surgical centres, naturopathic, podiatric, optometric, and chiropractic practices, to name just a few. Private health care practitioners need staff who are focused on customer service and customer retention. You will learn marketing as it is used in private health care. The private health care community also uses different computer software than the public system. T his Certificate program is the fi rst of its kind in Canada, and prepares individuals for a career in the fast-growing private health care setting. The US health care industry continued to create more jobs than any other industry in 2009, and Canada s health care climate is quickly following suit. and commitment toward their success. Students may choose between morning or evening classes. Seating is very limited, with a pre-enrolment interview required to determine suitability. Students with prior secretarial/reception and sales skills preferred, and male students are welcomed. This program differs from other MOA programs in that it focuses on private consumerpay health care, and requires the student to have a professional appearance and demeanor, with an attitude toward patient-centred, 5-Star customer service and sales. The program consists of six separate two-week courses, and a no-fee three-week practicum. Practicum hours can be completed during, or upon completion of, the program. Graduates will find employment in a wide variety of private medical settings, including cosmetic surgery, day surgery centres, naturopathic, podiatric, optometric, and chiropractic clinics. Develop a typing speed of 55 wpm, learn effective time management, telephone etiquette, clinical office skills, use of Clinical Essentials scheduling software, inventory control, accurate billing, and cash balancing skills. Nov 8-18 Office Leadership CV55 Learn how to become an effective leader within your team, to showcase your skills and that of your team. Students will learn goal setting, team building, how to structure team meetings and public events. Students will also learn how to create event invitations and PowerPoint presentations. Nov 22-Dec 2 Office Benchmarking and Quality Control CV56 Benchmarking and quality controls are two of the most important, yet little known, skill sets for private medical administration staff. Students will learn how to develop benchmarks, and evaluate patient service success outcomes, to become highly valuable members of their clinical team. Develop policies and procedures to provide structure for sound quality controls, which ensure all staff deliver the same calibre of service every day, every time.
