The College of Education We are the second-largest college at the University of Saskatchewan (U of S), and we have graduated more than 30,000 students in our 80-year history. We believe that education reaches beyond the classroom to shape futures and impact lives. It is through our innovative programming and the practical nature of our programs that our students are trained to succeed. Our experienced and caring faculty support students from the first day of classes through to graduation. In the fall of 2013 the college launched Program 2012, which was selected as one of the six most innovative teacher education programs in Canada by a research team led by Karen Goodnough from Memorial University of Newfoundland. The criteria included a strong element of collaboration and critical reflection; cohesive, well-articulated programs; and a high level of integration among the university courses and K-12 teaching.
Hands-on Learning There is no better place to learn to be an effective teacher than in schools, working directly with students. At the U of S, we ensure that you will have multiple opportunities to put your teaching skills to work. Pre-Internship Field Study Early in the study period, you will receive invaluable school experience and an introduction to working as a teacher. Internship In the final year of study, you will benefit from an extensive, 16-week placement under the supervision of a mentor teacher. This hands-on experience gives our students the confidence to commence full time teaching upon graduation. College of Education, University of Saskatchewan 3
Career Opportunities With an education degree from the University of Saskatchewan, you will have the skills you need to make a difference in the world around you. You will have exciting career opportunities locally, across Canada and around the world. Classroom careers elementary/middle years secondary/high school home economics industrial arts physical education music education Non-traditional teaching careers counselling high school students about teen life, education opportunities, careers and more applying your skills in a school library developing school curricula running for office, becoming a politician or taking a position on a school board working with youth in extra-curricular settings Scholarships In addition to scholarships, bursaries and awards available to all U of S students, the College of Education has more than $50,000 per year available to assist students with their education. Support We offer small classes, meaning you get more one-on-one time with professors. Mentor teachers guide you through your internship experience. We host professional development opportunities to help you transition from learner to teacher. Our Education Career Fair, which takes place every January, connects you with schools and their upcoming employment opportunities. 4 College of Education, University of Saskatchewan
Getting Involved Students in the College of Education are given many opportunities to become involved both within the college and throughout the community. Many college groups, such as the Education Students Society, put on events throughout the year. Student groups provide opportunities to be part of a support system, meet like-minded friends and impact the community. The College of Education is also a proud member of the Teachers Without Borders Society, an international group of millions of teachers who advocate for the human rights and welfare of students around the world. In the College of Education, you receive training on a specific age group; however, once you receive your teaching certificate in the province of Saskatchewan, you are certified to teach any grade, from Kindergarten to Grade 12. College of Education, University of Saskatchewan 5
Non-Direct Entry Programs These programs require university-level prerequisites before entry. At the U of S, it is not about pushing you into a program before you are ready. We believe that an informed teacher is a better teacher and, as such, we take the time to provide you with an advanced understanding of subject matter prior to commencing your teacher training. Elementary/Middle Years (Sequential Program) This four-year program is designed for students who want to become teachers in Kindergarten through Grade 8. The curriculum provides a general approach to various subjects to give students wide exposure to the subjects and teaching methods for elementary and middle-years classrooms. Interested students first apply to the College of Arts and Science to complete two years (60 credit units) of prerequisite study. Upon acceptance to the College of Arts and Science, students are encouraged to meet with an academic advisor in the College of Education to ensure they are taking the appropriate prerequisite classes to apply to the College of Education and complete the final two years of study for the Bachelor of Education degree. Secondary (Sequential Program) This program is designed for students who want to become teachers in grades nine through 12. Students specialize in two teaching areas to concentrate their expertise in particular high school subjects. Interested students first apply to the College of Arts and Science to complete two years (60 credit units) of prerequisite study. Upon acceptance to the College of Arts and Science, students are encouraged to meet with an academic advisor in the College of Education to ensure they are taking the appropriate prerequisite classes to complete the teaching areas and meet admission requirements for the final two years of the Bachelor of Education program. With only one additional year of study, you could earn a second degree, giving you a competitive advantage when applying for teaching positions in preferred high schools and school divisions. 6 College of Education, University of Saskatchewan
Combined Degrees, and Joint and Direct-Entry Programs Combined Bachelor of Education/Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology This five-year program is designed for students who intend to teach Physical Education at the secondary level. Students begin their career as a student in the College of Kinesiology at the U of S. They spend three years completing the prerequisites for the kinesiology portion of their combined program and then apply to the College of Education. Once accepted, students will complete an additional two years and graduate with Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Bachelor of Education degrees. Joint Bachelor of Education/Bachelor of Music in Music Education This is a sequential degree program for those who want to teach music at either the elementary/middle years or secondary levels. You will spend four years earning your Bachelor of Music in Music Education and go directly into the College of Education for two additional years to earn your Bachelor of Education degree. Practical and Applied Arts: Home Economics This four-year program trains secondary teachers with expertise in relationships, budgeting, healthy living, families, technology, clothing and textiles, and more. This crossdisciplinary program helps students to grow in a variety of areas and then pass on that array of knowledge to others. Practical and Applied Arts: Industrial Arts The U of S offers the only program in the province for teaching Industrial Arts at the secondary level. This four-year program is ideal if you enjoy working with your hands and sharing skills such as woodworking, mechanics or electronics with students. Practical and Applied Arts: Vocational Training (degree or certificate) If you currently hold a journeyperson s certificate and you want to teach your trade at the secondary level, this program may be for you. Your trade will become your first teaching area and the College of Education will provide you with the skills necessary for you to pass on your trade to others. The degree program is three years, and the certificate program is one year. College of Education, University of Saskatchewan 7
Aboriginal Teacher Education Programs The U of S is home to Canada s well-established Aboriginal teacher education programs. Indian Teacher Education Program (ITEP) ITEP is the largest First Nations education experience in the country. It is a fouryear elementary/middle years or secondary program that trains First Nations students to become effective teachers who can meet and respond to the changing needs, challenges and objectives of both Aboriginal and non Aboriginal students, particularly in First Nations communities and schools. The program will equip you with the knowledge and skills to pass on your education and culture to today s youth while you hone your skills as a role model and mentor. Hands-on experience is a priority in the program, which offers two three-week teaching opportunities and one 16-week field experience, including two weeks in a First Nations or provincial school. In addition, ITEP draws upon the support and expertise of professors, Elders and counsellors as you complete your Bachelor of Education degree. Northern Teacher Education Program (NORTEP) Based in La Ronge, NORTEP is a four-year degree offered jointly by the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Regina. Northern residents, preferably with fluency in an Aboriginal language, benefit from studying close to home and experiencing ample field-based learning, including: A two-week field practicum in second year practise teaching for 11 weeks in third year an internship placement in a classroom for one semester of fourth year a full-time teaching block of 15 consecutive days in fourth year 8 College of Education, University of Saskatchewan
I would like to help other Aboriginal students reap the benefits of education and realize their academic potential. LISA LANGAN, SUNTEP STUDENT Saskatchewan Urban Native Teacher Education Program (SUNTEP) SUNTEP is a four-year program designed for Métis and non-status Aboriginal students who want to teach at either the elementary/middle years or secondary levels. This program, offered in both Prince Albert and Saskatoon, includes Native studies and crosscultural education. Field experience begins in the first year of the program and continues through to graduation. Classroom experience includes, but is not limited to, urban centres, rural communities, northern schools, band schools and the Catholic school division. Aurora College Teacher Education Program (ACTEP) ACTEP is a three-year teacher education diploma program, offered via community-based deliveries on a rotational basis, leading to a Northwest Territories teaching certificate. This qualifies graduates to teach Kindergarten to Grade 9 in the Northwest Territories. Alternatively, you can opt into the four-year U of S Bachelor of Education degree, which leads to a Northwest Territories professional teaching certificate. This program is offered annually at Thebacha Campus in Fort Smith. College of Education, University of Saskatchewan 9
