4 Schulich School of Education Divisions and Teaching Subjects Offered primary/junior (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6) Candidates do not choose teaching subjects. Junior/Intermediate (Grades 4 to 10) Teacher candidates must choose one teaching subject in which they have at least three full undergraduate courses (or six one semester courses). Teaching subjects offered are: English All courses presented for this teaching subject must be English literature courses. French as a second language No more than one full course can be at the first year level. Applicants must possess oral and written fluency in the French language and a thorough knowledge of grammar. Geography History Candidates are required to have three full courses in History, with at least onehalf course being Canadian History. Mathematics Mathematics courses equivalent to a secondary school Math credit cannot be counted. At least six credits (one full course) must be upper year credits. Music (Instrumental) All three full courses presented for this teaching subject must be performance based. An additional supplemental form ensures that candidates will be considered based on academic background and experience in the discipline. Applicants should have experience with brass, woodwind and percussion. Health and Physical Education Practice teaching takes place in a Roman Catholic Separate School Board and teacher candidates must be of the Catholic faith. A pastoral reference may be required. Science (General) The three full undergraduate courses must be in a combination of Biology, Chemistry and Physics with at least two of the three disciplines. Visual Arts All three undergraduate courses must be studio courses in Art Fundamentals. A supplemental form ensures that candidates will be considered based on academic background and experience in the discipline. intermediate/senior (Grades 7 to 12) Candidates must have at least five full undergraduate courses (or ten one semester courses) in the first teaching subject and at least three full undergraduate courses (or six one semester courses) in the second teaching subject. Business Studies General As a first teaching subject, five full courses (ten semesters) are required from at least two of: Organizations (Human Resources), Management, Marketing, Business Ethics, Entrepreneurship, Accounting, and Technology Management. Only one full course (two semesters) in Economics can count towards the requirement. For Business Studies as a second teaching subject, three full courses (six semesters) are required from at least two of: Organizations (Human Resources), Management, Marketing, Business Ethics, Entrepreneurship, Accounting, and Technology Management. Only one course (one semester) in Economics can count towards the requirement. Biology Biochemistry can be counted towards Biology or Chemistry, but not both. Chemistry Biochemistry can be counted towards Biology or Chemistry, but not both. English All courses presented for this teaching subject must be English literature. French as a second language No more than two full courses towards a first teaching subject in French can be at the first year level. No more than one full course towards a second teaching subject in French can be at the first year level. Geography History As a first teaching subject, candidates are required to have five full courses in History, with at least one full course being Canadian History. As a second teaching subject, candidates are required to have three full courses in History, with at least one-half course being Canadian History. Mathematics Mathematics courses equivalent to a secondary school Math credit cannot be counted. At least 12 credits (two full courses) towards a first teaching subject must be upper-year credits. At least six credits (one full course) towards a second teaching subject must be upper-year credits. Music (Instrumental) Applicants must present the required number of courses, including a minimum of three full performance courses. A supplemental form ensures that candidates will be considered based on academic background and experience in the discipline. Applicants should have experience with brass, woodwind and percussion. Health and Physical Education Physics Religious Education (Catholic) Practice teaching takes place in a Roman Catholic Separate School Board and teacher candidates must be of the Catholic faith. A pastoral reference may be required. Visual Arts Three of the five undergraduate courses must be studio courses. Three studio courses are required for a second teaching subject. Candidates will be considered based on academic background and experience in the discipline. Courses in Art Fundamentals must be present.

Experiential qualifications are considered in the final selection process. Applicants with an admission average of 70% are eligible to apply. Candidates are required to submit an Experience Profile form online. See required documentation for additional information. Applicants must hold a recognized undergraduate degree, all required teaching subject courses, and be able to provide a final transcript indicating that the degree has been conferred by the end of June immediately prior to entering the program. The degree must be conferred no later than Spring 2015 convocation. Admission averages are calculated on the best ten full, or 20 semester course grades or equivalent (excluding college transfer courses) out of the first 25 full, or 50 semester courses completed. This average is calculated on all course grades appearing on the transcript at the time of application. Applicants with advanced standing must complete at least 10 full (20 semester) courses at the university undergraduate level. A maximum of five graduate level courses will be included in the average, for those applicants presenting graduate level courses. Applicants must apply online, beginning in September, through the Ontario Universities Application Centre at: The application deadline is December 1st. Official transcripts from all Ontario universities may be ordered by completing the OUAC Transcript Request Form online. Transcripts from institutions outside of Ontario must be ordered directly from the institution. All transcripts must be received by the Office of the Registrar at Nipissing University immediately following application. Please refer to our website for current admission cycle deadline dates. Special Admissions Some spaces are reserved in the program for Early Childhood Education/Child Youth Worker/Child Studies graduates (Primary/Junior only), differently abled candidates, Aboriginal candidates and visible minorities. Additional information is sent to such applicants once they have applied. Please note that applicants considered for these spaces must still meet minimum admission requirements.
6 Required Documentation for Admission Application is made through the Ontario Universities Application Centre (OUAC) beginning in mid-september. 1. Transcripts from ALL institutions attended, including those on exchange or letter of permission, even when the grades are not yet recorded. Applicants who have attended post-secondary institutions outside North America must have their foreign transcripts assessed by World Education Services (WES): A WES Credential Evaluation Report, including a Course-by-Course Analysis, must be sent directly to the Admissions Office, and must be received by the transcript deadline (This does not apply to those individuals who attended institutions outside North America as part of an exchange program with their Canadian home institution). 2. Legal proof of change of name, if different from that on the transcript(s) (e.g., marriage certificate). 3. A Completed Experience Profile is required. The Experience Profile is completed online. Additional information will be sent to you once we receive your application. 4. English Language Proficiency Test results are required from all applicants whose first language is not English. Nipissing will accept results from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) including the Test of Written English (TWE) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) or Pearson Test of English Academic (PEARSON). Minimum Scores TOEFL Paper-Based Test 600 TOEFL Computer-Based Test 250, with 5.5 on the TWE TOEFL ibt 100, with 27 on writing and 27 on speaking. The test is administered by the Educational Testing Service IELTS 7, with 6.5 in reading and listening, and 7 in writing and speaking.
