This program will enable students to develop basic counselling skills in areas that include general counselling, cross cultural communication, family and youth issues. These courses are all offered in the evening which allows people to complete this program while employed fulltime during the day. The entire program takes two years to complete. The program provides learners with a foundation of knowledge and skills requried to provide culturally appropriate counselling services to Aboriginal families and individuals. It involves 346 contact hours, comprised of an orientation, nine required courses and two electives. Learners who successfully complete the program will have the capacity to respond effectively to the increasingly complex role of a counsellor in an Aboriginal setting of community. While in the program, learners must be employed or hold a supervised and related volunteer position in a social service or comparable agency that is of sufficient duration to allow learners to practice skills and knowledge learned in their program. Program Duration: 346 contact hours Two elective options are selected for each program, based on the topics most relevant to the work and interest of the student group. Each of the courses incorporates knowledge of western concepts and traditional philosophies and knowledge systems of Aboriginal people as they relate to mental health and wellness. The courses use adult education methodology as a link between health and wellness theory and practice and the real issues workers face daily in their role as a service worker. This program is a partnership initiative between Aboriginal Focus Programs, Extended Education, The University of Manitoba, and the Manitoba Community Wellness Working Group (MCWWG). Program Duration: 60 credit hour (2 years) post secondary program Electives (Specialization Courses) 27 Credit Hours The program will comprise of 27 hours (credit and/or non credit) in a specialization, (e.g. Addictions, Wellness and Diabetes). The courses will be selected by the program's Curriculum Management Committee.
