1 DEPARTMENT OF CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION Urban Teacher Education Program (UTEP) B.S. in Elementary Education Overview & Purpose: Preparing World-Class Teachers for an Interdependent World The 120-credit Bachelor of Science program in Elementary Education consists of a curriculum that meets state and professional standards and prepares candidates for certification as elementary teachers. The program is grounded in cutting-edge empirical research and best practices for addressing the educational needs of underserved children and youth, especially African American and other children of color in urban and other diverse settings. 4 DEPARTMENT OF CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION Urban Teacher Education Program (UTEP) B.S. in Elementary Education ADDITIONAL PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS Candidates should submit the supplemental application after meeting the requirements below. In order to be granted full admission into the Elementary Education Program, candidates must: declare Elementary Education as a major (University Registrar), have completed the Orientation & Pre-Professional Seminar Course or equivalent competency, provide proof of passing Praxis I: Pre-Professional Skills Test in Reading, Writing and Mathematics (or equivalents) as required by the Office of the State Superintendent (OSSE) in the District of Columbia, attach a current unofficial transcript to the application, have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above, have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above in the major, have at least a C or above in all education courses, and submit a completed application (including Personal Statement and Test Scores) to the Office of Teacher Education by April 1 st for Fall admission and October 1 st for Spring admission. Before being admitted to the Elementary Education Program, candidates must acknowledge that: an interview is required for admission (usually completed during the first day of the Reading Period), a second interview is required before beginning the internship (usually completed during the first day of the Reading Period), an unpaid full-time teaching internship (i.e. student teaching) is required [typically completed during the final year], and passing marks on OSSE test requirements for teacher certification, such as Praxis II (Content) and Principles of Learning and Teaching, are required for internship course completion and graduation clearance. 4

6 a College Algebra I is a pre-requisite for Math 020 and 021. MATH 020 and 021 are required for all students and may be taken in any order. If you are exempt from College Algebra I, then Math 020, Math 021, and an additional STEM elective are required. If you have received advanced placement credit for Math, then no STEM elective is required. b Students are required to earn 3 credits for a life science course and 3 credits for a physical science course. Below are options for candidates seeking elementary education certification: COMP 001 Life Sciences Lec/Lab, COMP 003 Physical Science Lec/Lab, CHEM 001 General & Applied Chemistry, and other courses approved by advisor. c Students should see advisor for Fine Arts course approval. d Students are required to earn 6 credits in one world language.
