A Comparison of Grades in the Traditional Versus the Online formats of CJ10100 and CJ20000 January Conclusion: The data show that the Online versions of CJ and CJ conducted by the Criminal Justice Department over the last 2.5 years do not vary significantly in grade distribution from their traditional classroom format counterparts. Institutional Research
Purpose: Between fall 2007 and fall 2009, approximately 7.8% of the students taking CJ and CJ20000 have chosen the online format. This report is a comparison of the grades earned in the online classes versus the traditional classes over the last 2.5 years. The major question is 1) how do grades and passing rates compare when analyzing grades earned in online and traditional format classes Online classes are defined, for this report, as classes in which the primary method of interaction between the professor and the student is through electronic means and there are limited or no meetings in a traditional classroom setting. This analysis looked at two sets of data: 1) students who enrolled in the classes and 2) students who received a letter grade in the class. The major grade breakdowns are o Students who received an A or B in order to determine whether grades differed in the two formats. The decision was made to group A s or B s together as they represent above-average grades. o Students who received an A, B, or C in order to determine whether pass rates differed in the two formats. The decision was made not to count D s in any category because while a grade of D is a passing grade, it is considered below-average performance.
The data below shows a comparison of 1) grade distributions of the Online CJ and classes with 2) all of the of those classes (including the online classes). Table 1 Comparison of Online CJ and Grades vs. all of the CJ and classes (including online) offered over the last 3 years. students Online Sections of CJ and All Sections of CJ and Percent Percent Students 2569 Percent Percent Difference between online when compared to all A % A % B % Online A and B# 58.71% B % All A and B# 59.79% -1.08% C % Online A, B, and C# 78.61% C % All A, B, and C# 79.72% -1.10% Online A and B (% All A and B (% 62.4% Of Letter Grades)* of Letter Grades)* 63.7% -1.3% Online A, B and C All A, B and C (% of Letter 83.6% (% of Letter Grades)* Grades)* 84.9% -1.3% #These are all students who enrolled in the class and received any type of grade or designation including AF, W, WP, WF, UW, AW, and I. * Of Letter Grades are the percentages when only counting the students who received a letter grade of A through F. In all of the comparisons, the variation is reasonably minor. In each case, the grades earned in the online classes were slightly lower than the grades earned in the traditional format classes.
Figure 1 shows the grades of A and B in all, the online, and the traditional Figure 2 shows the grades of A, B, and C in all, the online, and the traditional
The table below compares the grade distribution in the online classes with the traditional classes only (excluding the online classes). When the online classes are compared separately with only the traditional classes, the difference in distribution is a bit more obvious. The grades tend to be marginally lower in the online classes than those earned in the traditional classroom format. Table 2 Comparison of Online CJ and grades vs. the traditional CJ and classes offered (excluding online classes) over the last 3 years. students Online CJ and Classes Traditional CJ and Classes only 201 Percent Percent Students 2368 Percent Percent Difference between online when compared to Traditional A % A % B % Online A and B# 58.71% B % Traditional A and B# 59.88% -1.17% C % Online A, B, and C# 78.61% C % Traditional A, B, and C# 79.81% -1.20% Online A and B (% of Traditional A and B (% 62.4% Letter Grades)* Letter Grades)* 63.8% -1.4% Online A, B, and C Traditional A, B, and C (% of Letter 83.6% (% of Letter Grades)* Grades)* 85.0% -1.4% #These are all students who enrolled in the class and received any type of grade or designation including AF, W, WP, WF, UW, AW, and I. * Of Letter Grades are the percentages when only counting the students who received a letter grade of A through F. In all of the comparisons, the variation is reasonably minor. In each case, the grades earned in the online classes were slightly lower than the grades earned in the traditional format classes.
