JOSEPH ACADEMY News Agent: Needed Mary Catherine Wienand Barnes and Sister Mary Jane Robertshaw, both members of the Class of 1947, the last graduating class from St. Joseph Academy, attended their 60 th class reunion in June. Having been best friends since first grade in Greensburg, they traveled great distances to renew their friendship. Mary Catherine, now retired from the Arizona State Government, continues to reside in Phoenix. Sister Mary Jane, OSU, an accomplished sculptress, lives at the Ursuline motherhouse in New Rochelle, NY. CLASS OF 1937 News Agent: Needed CLASS OF 1937 Claudia Callaghan Kent The Class of 1937 was represented at its 70 th reunion by Claudia Callaghan Kent who traveled to Greensburg from South Bend, IN. Accompanied by her niece, Wilma Ulery, Claudia attended the Friday evening dinner for the 50- year class and the Saturday banquet. CLASS OF 1942 News Agent: Rosemary Kaltenbach Denial, 2323 Edinboro Rd., Erie, PA Six members of the Class of 1942 attended some part of Alumni Weekend 2007, their 65 th class reunion. Present were Rita Burlas Daugherty, Dorothy Hacker, and Jane Zimmerman Holtzer, all from Greensburg, Marion Cronin Brown from Washington, DC, Margaret Holway Yeager and her daughter from Texas, and Sister Mary Naab from New York Mary Liz Moran Carroll is very pleased to announce the birth of two new great grandsons, grandsons of her daughter, Diane Carroll Dudek 68. B, Pittsburgh, PA When you opened your Alumni News, did you notice that the only class listed before ours was the Class of 1928? Then the report jumped to That puts us right up there at the beginning of the line. Remember when we were last in line and had to sort through all those pages to find our class news? It should give all of us cause to wonder where all of those years went and to want to share our special and mundane doings with those we may not have seen or heard from for years. The news this time is sparse that s the only bad news. The good news is that we heard from Louise Kinney Rager who reported that her great granddaughter was born on February 3. Who else is a great grandmother? When she wrote, Louise was planning to travel to New York for a week with the Old Globe Theatre tour from San Diego which included three Broadway shows and scheduled sightseeing. That, dear friends, is all the news this time. I tried to contact some from whom (or about whom) we have not heard news. My luck has run out apparently. Wrong numbers. Disconnected phones. No answering machines. I do need you to contact me. I hope that you will! We d all love to hear from you and about you. The next deadline will most likely be in early January. John suffered a massive heart attack and lost his life and Norrie remains hospitalized in Charleston with multiple injuries. Our prayers are with Norrie and for John. May he rest in peace. We are sorry to report the death of Teddy Holmes brother in May. May he rest in peace. Margie Easley Davis and Bill have had some health problems and were both hospitalized recently.caryl Franznick Schaeder s oldest daughter Mary Lee and husband Jake now own Caryl s former home and plan to retire to Florida in several years. They are the parents of Leah, Rachel married to Colin, and Kate, a college freshman. Pattie, her second daughter, and husband Rick, live not far from Caryl and have two children in college and one who is home-schooled. Third daughter Joanne, who graduated from Seton Hill in 1974, has four sons and one daughter and lives in Colorado, and fourth daughter Peggy and husband Peter have a son graduating from Binghamton University and a daughter who is a freshman at Marist College. Oldest son Bill and wife Janet have Christopher, 16 and Carly, 13 and live in Wayzata, MN. Cathy (fifth daughter) and husband Eric, who live in Princeton, NJ, are the parents of two sons and a daughter, and youngest child Paul and wife Jackie are the parents of Caryl s youngest grandchild, Paul Jr., who is 6. Caryl volunteers at a local elementary school library and a public library near her home. Though not present but heard from were: Jane Clougherty Askins, who had company for the weekend, has nine wonderful grandchildren, and invites classmates to visit in Rochester, Mary Irene Liddell Benz, in good health and would like to hear from classmates, Jacqueline Fallar Callahan, granddaughter s graduation, Marjorie Firsching Shipe, who sent greetings, Margaret Rauskauskas Allen, Transportation and physical infirmities prohibit trip, Flora Gorirossi Bourdeau, who wrote several pages of interesting material, noted that she has a daughter in New York, and would like to hear about the reunion, and Gloria Fanelli Kenny, whose husband is very ill. The boat docked for walking tours in many medieval towns including Melk Abbey, Vienna, Cologne, Nuremberg, and Amsterdam and passed through 68 locks on the Danube, the Main Danube Canal, and the Rhine.Claire Weber Prendergast s son John has co-authored a book with Don Cheadle, an Academy Award nominated actor, entitled Not On Our Watch. The book s foreward was written by Eli Wiesel and the introduction, by Senator Barack Obama and Senator Sam Brownback. John is a senior advisor to the International Crisis Group and a former official in the Clinton Administration. Russell was born to the Richards daughter Irene.We share the sorrow, also, of Wilma Kastner Englehart whose husband Tom died suddenly on June 4. May they rest in peace!...betty Cwiek, who volunteers time with Meals on Wheels and at the local hospital, enjoyed a Bermuda cruise with friends last spring. Betty frequently drives a distance to the Lutheran Home in Westlake, OH to visit Rosemary Konarski Relyea who especially enjoys a lunch date out with Betty.Jean Farrell Zora s granddaughter, Jennifer Zora, a 2006 Harvard graduate, taught for one year in South America and, on returning to the U.S., received a full scholarship to Emory Medical School in Atlanta.Elinor Fritschi Hill enjoys taking care of her first great granddaughter, Madison, while the baby s mother, Elinor s granddaughter, attends Pitt to complete her studies to earn an RN and BS in nursing. The family celebrated Madison s first birthday this past July.Isabelle Flood Andrews has proudly announced the birth on February 23, 2007 of Sean Christopher Brush, her first great grandchild.pat Michael Murphy, undergoing cancer chemotherapy, happily announced the marriage of her son the meteorologist on September 30, Clarina DiPietro, involved with parish activities as president of the parish organization, Ladies of Charity, took a vacation in July at the Outer Banks.Lorraine Vallari Gunset and Catherine Dorrian Reynolds entertained the Women s Club of Suffern, NY recently with their presentation of The Best of Broadway, a rendition of piano music and songs from several Broadway musicals. Many of our classmates have been challenged with problems that accompany life after 75 including their own failing physical and mental health and that of their spouses. CLASS OF 1953 News Agent: Ellen Fitzgerald, (302) , Lindamere, 123 North Rd, Wilmington, DE The Class of 1953 s retreat in April, rich in love and sharing, included Ellen Fitzgerald, Marian Callahan Limegrover, Anne Coveney (in remission from her illness), Alice Healy Hennigan, and Sister Florence Hebeler.We extend our sympathy to Mary Dot Corvington Winslow whose brother died last fall. Francesmary Peters, who attended Seton Hill s spring commencement to see her great niece, Kate Ward, graduate and then accompanied sisters Grace 56 and Lillian Peters Codere 47 to the Hill for Lillian s 60 th class reunion in June, had a second hip replacement in June.Peggy Petros Hetu and her daughter, who vacationed in Tahiti and Bora Bora, remarked, It s more beautiful than Hawaii!.Ellen spent a week in Aruba where she attended a reunion of students that she taught there, another week visiting Gail Harvey Geoghan on Long Island, and then departed on August 1 for a 77-day freighter trip from New York, through the Mediterranean, the Suez Canal, and ports in India. They have a second home near Ocala, FL.Iris Garcia Ottens and Nate are yearly visitors. This year Iris and Nate will celebrate their 50 th wedding anniversary with Norma and Bill. Also attending will be Josefina Folguera 57. Iris enjoys having children, Robert and Crystal nearby. Delores Musarra Plunkett spent last Thanksgiving in California visiting Gini Carter Keeling and Roberta McQuade Campbell. She recently returned from a trip to Central Europe visiting Vienna, Prague and Budapest. Great trip, thanks to guide books from Loretta Collins Seamands. In August grandson Brian will graduate from Marine boot camp at Parris Island and Delores will be there. In September she will take a birthday celebration trip with her daughter Donna. They are driving down the Oregon Coast from Portland to San Francisco.Tommie Nolan spent three weeks in Ecuador and twelve days in Toronto in June. She and Anne Welsh Rockett attended the Seton Hill cocktail party in Boston. Finn and Liam, Ann AG Ruhman Wennhold s grandsons spent a very special Mother s Day with their grandmother.mary Lee Gannon Krieg s grandchildren, Sylvia and Charlie, moved to Grandma s house from Colorado Springs while their parents find a new home in Seattle. Her son, Jim, has taken a new job as a trauma orthopedist at Harborview Hospital in Seattle. It is nice having grandchildren nearby since her children live all the way from Honolulu to London. At our class meeting we shared our stories most of us are retired but still volunteering and working for our children as nannies or in their businesses. A side bar is that everyone looked very good and the younger alums couldn t believe we were the 50-year class. For those of you who were unable to attend and missed our class meeting, I want to share with you how proud I am of our classmates, many of whom went on to receive MA and PhD degrees and have had careers in business and teaching as well as the many women who stayed in the home raising these wonderful children and grandchildren we all produced. Bravo to 57! Peggy Dalton Masterson has retired as news agent. Both Peggy and Ina Moran Bailey did a fantastic job in this role for many years. As their successor, I hope to live up to the high standards they have set. I am counting on all of you to be frequent contributors. Peggy now lives in North Carolina and currently is nursing husband Greg after his recent hip replacement surgery. Peggy and Greg keep busy with their reading and French conversation groups and bridge.kay Coleman O Brien, who headed off to Europe for two weeks, suggested we get together September 2008 for a mini reunion at the renovated Bedford Springs Hotel. She will check on availability and prices. Stay tuned. Pat Didyoung Wentling suggested that the Florida Snowbirds get together. Many classmates winter in Florida and President JoAnne Boyle tries to get to a meeting of the Florida alums each year. Again, stay tuned for dates. Judy Butcher Chadnock did an excellent job as Reunion Chairperson for us and she was unanimously re-elected as chair for the 2012 reunion.sharon Murphy Mendez is considering moving from Florida to Richmond, Virginia. She will be moving with two of her children.lois Berner enjoyed the reunion weekend but regrettably fell the following Monday and broke her hip. She was in the hospital and rehab for two weeks but is now back at her Pittsburgh residence. Last September they spent three weeks touring Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and North Dakota. They are now proud to say that they have visited in all 50 states. Last winter they returned to their favorite areas of Florida where they enjoyed the beach, square-dancing, biking, walking, bridge, golf, and visiting family and friends in the area.denise and Jane Lambert Abe enjoyed a mini-reunion at Denise s home in Brunswick, ME and a trip to Montreal. Jane continues to teach in the pullout gifted program in Salt Lake City and reports that her son, daughter, and 97-year-old mother are doing well.lois Sculco, SC visited Israel in July to attend the presentation of the Educator of the Year Award to Sister Gemma Del Duca. Marlene Ward Frey and Howard cruised Italy, Turkey, and Greece to celebrate their 46 th wedding anniversary and Marlene s 70 th birthday. A memorable experience for them was a visit to Ephesus where they walked in the footsteps of St. Paul.Another classmate who is proud to claim that she has visited all 50 states is Pat Soentgen Bunnell. Last summer she and husband Dave traveled over 3,300 miles to Pat s Bead and Button conference and then returned through Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri to their home in Baton Rouge. Shortly afterward they were off to Santa Fe to visit their two daughters who were pregnant.pat Prescott Fogarty and her roommate, Sister Colette Hanlon traveled to Colorado to visit a third roommate, Mary Lou Ginder Edwards last June. In August the Jersey Shore group planned its mini-reunion in Avalon. Pat s daughter, Maureen, gave birth to a son, Pat s 12 th grandchild. She asks that all classmates send news for the next Forward. Peggy Rooney Goldstein was in the middle of a big project this year, but hopes to be at the next reunion. Marcia Putnam Berish has announced her first grandchild while Pat Fitzgerald Engel has nine grandchildren. Marianne Drott Squyres daughter is expecting twins at 40. So we and our offspring are heeding the admonition to increase and multiply. Our co-chairs for the 50 th are Melon Regis-Civetta and Jeanne Spencer. Kathleen Gill Stanford s death was reported in the last Forward. She graduated from Seton Hill as Sister Vincent Ferrer Gill. Sally Marne Brosky and husband Robert, avid golfers, swing clubs whenever possible and Martha Morey DeMore and husband Robert are relocating to Aiken, SC because of weather and golf facilities. Touring in a cool season, they avoided the crowds and enjoyed seeing the art, architecture, and history of Sicily, Rome, Florence, and Pisa.One of the highlights of the April trip to Italy that Pat Garvey Regan and Jim took was visiting Pompeii. In June Pat and Jim joined her siblings, their spouses, children, and grandchildren at Woodloch Pines in Hawley, PA. There they celebrated what would have been their father s 100 th and their mother s 90 th birthdays. The family is always mindful of the financial and emotional strain it took to send all seven children to college. So In Memoriam Mary Anne Spellman McGrath 59 Mary Anne Spellman McGrath 59, dedicated Seton Hill University alumna and major benefactor, along with her husband Jack, lost her valiant forty-year battle to Multiple Sclerosis on March 20, Diagnosed with the affliction at age 30, Mary Anne was ever grateful for the Sisters of Charity s Scholarship that enabled her to attend Seton Hill. Her kindness and generosity motivated her, with Jack, to give back to the University in the form of an endowed scholarship which provides opportunity to students with potential greater than resources. Just four days before her death Mary Anne was named a 2007 Distinguished Alumna Leadership Award Recipient. In her memory her husband Jack and daughter Meghan McIntyre accepted the award during the Alumni Weekend ceremony at Seton Hill. Mary Anne is also survived by daughter Mhoire, son Jay, and five grandchildren. May her kind and gentle soul rest in peace. how are we celebrating? Barbara Edwards MacKenzie hit the 65 year mark in January, and I spent it in California being present at the birth of my fifth grandson. I actually cut the cord at Braden s birth. What a miracle to witness as I became a Medicare Grandma! I can t help but remember my days at the Hill and how much my Catholic faith has been with me during 41 years of marriage, three wonderful children, and five loving grandsons. I have been blessed. Barbara s husband retired three years ago, and they now live in Williamsburg, VA. Kathy Haas Stukus celebrated her birthday with a vacation at the beach in Corolla, NC with her three children, two sisters, and their families. Turning 65 seems like a very big milestone to me. Those 65 years have gone by so quickly. Kathy and Phil enjoy ballroom dancing, being with their four grandchildren, traveling, gardening, playing bridge, volunteering with their parish s St. Vincent de Paul Society, and bringing the Eucharist to shut-ins in local nursing homes. Friends of Sheila Delaney had a surprise 65 th birthday party for her. Sheila, who is thankful to have made it this far, has a law degree from Catholic University, and works in the civil rights division of the Department of Justice.Mary-Ann Kerekes Salvatore had a quiet 65 th but the celebratory lunches and dinners continued for weeks. Amazing how busy schedules are for us retirees! Her India mission project has finished, but she will continue to return to India because of lasting friendships she formed at the school. She and her husband John plan to spend three months in Barcelona and three in Seville next year. They have a daughter and two sons, and two grandchildren. 4 Louise Brown Receives 2007 Cable Leaders in Learning Award L ouise Calvario Brown 64, fulltime volunteer and coordinator of Wood-to- Wonderful s Reading is Toyrific program, has been honored with a prestigious Cable Leaders in Learning Award for creating and implementing innovative ways to educate students and for making a substantial contribution to learning in her hometown, Reading, PA. One of three winners nationwide in the Cable Partnerships for Learning Category, Louise has been recognized for her work in managing Reading is Toyrific, Wood-to-Wonderful s literacy outreach program which motivates young children from low income families to read by pairing students with local mentors/volunteers and providing each one with his/her own library of age-appropriate books. As coordinator, Louise recruits volunteers, selects schools to participate, initiates relationships with teachers, chooses the books and toys, and plans monthly reading sessions. The awards were presented to the winners in Washington, DC in early June and included a cash award and a four-day trip to Washington. years, but goes back to Greensburg often to visit her 92 year-old father. Even though she retired from teaching in 1998, Joann is busy managing housing for students at the University of Colorado. Birthdays are on Joann s mind now she welcomed her first grandchild in April.Sally Conroy Fullman s magic formula for her birthday was 65 x 3. Starting early, Sally and her twin sister Sue each did 65 good works, and sent a letter with a return postcard to 65 friends asking them to do a good deed in their honor. It was the best and longest birthday ever. Postcards arrived for three weeks, and people did such thoughtful, helpful things for others. Sally won an award for her work with Project Healthy Bones, a weekly class focusing on exercise and education for people with osteoporosis. I didn t do anything special for my birthday, says Bobbi Fitzgerald Grant, but I d like to share with you what has become important to me: God, family, friends, health, time to do things for others, and time for myself. Fortunately almost all of these go together for me. Bobbi lives close to church, attends daily Mass, volunteers with RCIA, and is a Eucharistic Minister. Two of her sons and their families live within 20 minutes, and her other son is only three hours away. Bobbi is a tutor with Literacy Volunteers of America, and volunteers at the local hospital. It sounds as if Bobbi does 65 good deeds every day!...many of us expressed similar thoughts as we looked back over our lives. We no longer have the concerns we had as 22-year olds finding a job, looking for Mr. Right, or earning a lot of money. Our thoughts now turn to loving bonds with family and friends, the sustaining support of our Catholic faith, the rewards of having had a solid education and a fulfilling career, and good health.. Now that she s retired, Sully dabbles in real estate in Pittsburgh, and often sees Carole Janus McNamee who lives nearby. Carole, a widow for 13 years, has two daughters, one a nurse with Hospice, and the other a Ph.D. candidate in archeology at the University of Calgary in Canada. Carole works in family and child counseling, specializing in early intervention with children from birth to three years of age. She s looking forward to a second career in sculpting. Sue Carman Patrick is still working full time, and has spent the past four years on a research project studying those over the age of 75 who are aging well. One of the things I have learned is how important it is to keep your mind active, says Sue who has begun taking classes with Carnegie Mellon University s Academy for Lifelong Learning. She s had two classes so far, one on aromatherapy and the other on Death Investigations taught by a former city of Pittsburgh detective. Sue found classmate Janet Karakitsos Conomos, very much alive and well, taking the class also.fran Kaminski Slattery could be teaching classes in graphic and web design since she has her own business in that field. She and her husband Arthur live in New Hampshire, and are celebrating their 40 th wedding anniversary. (Fran says the heck with 65 th birthdays.) They have two children and a year-old grandson. During their annual vacation together in Phoenix and Tucson, Bonnie Harshbarger and Sharon Brewer spent a day at the Phoenix Museum of Art which had a special exhibit from Holland commemorating Rembrandt s 400 th birthday, and a collection of Italian 17 th century Caravaggio-like art. After all that culture, they raised the bar even further with a toast and fabulous lunch at Arcadia Farms, their favorite restaurant... Now that she s had a two-week vacation in Hawaii last year, Paula Kiles Newman is happy to say California here I come, because she has two sons and four grandchildren living there. Paula s goal is to continue traveling Alaska next year and to keep exercising she takes classes in Pilates, stretch and flex, Hatha yoga, and deep-water fitness. Paula must not have turned 65 yet!...ruth Ann Faller Collins has been happily living in beautiful Santa Barbara, CA for 30 years. She and her husband Mike are retired, and enjoy hiking and back packing. Ruth Ann has an M.A. in economics, and worked in county government in regional urban planning for 15 years. She s rekindled her love of music, and teaches piano. She s often in touch with Grace Hoover Puterman in Tampa, FL...After working in Admissions at Seton Hill and getting a master s degree, Kathy Whalen Eaton began a 33-year career as a high school guidance counselor in Framington, MA. Her full-time job involves putting into practice the theories she teaches, that is, designing and getting funding for community-based programs in health and human services. There s nothing routine in what I do. Mo s daughter married a professor at Columbia University in a small ceremony in Germany. Husband Jim, her primary support, had a major role in the publication of the book as well he named it. A second milestone for Naomi this year is reaching her second year of cancer remission following surgeries in 2003 and 2005 and subsequent treatments. A Blairsville, Pa. native, she has lived in New Jersey for more than thirty years but returns to western Pennsylvania periodically to visit relatives. Over the next three years, the GENA project will train 92 geneticists and their high school educator partners in advanced pedagogical techniques, assessment, and curriculum development. The program is conducted under a National Science Foundation grant by the American Society of Human Geneticists and the National Society of Biology Teachers. Currently 62 women triathletes, The Sweaty Tri Girls, participate in the sport, some of whom use Seton Hill s pool to train for swimming.
