2 2012 Management History Program The MH sessions of the 2012 Academy of Management conference will be held in Boston on August 6 and 7. The detailed instructions for the online submission process are available at: The deadline for submission is January 12, 2012, by 5 PM EST. For any inquiries about your submission, contact Milorad Novicevic (mnovicevic@bus.olemiss.edu) before December 13, The 2012 AOM conference theme is Informal Economy. Informal economy refers to economic activities that are not recorded in the official national accounting system. We therefore welcome contributions shedding a historic light on this theme. In addition, we are also interested in all other rigorous undertakings reaching deeply into the past of theory and practice in any domain in the AOM (e.g., histories of leadership, entrepreneurship, organizations, and social issues in management). In general, research in the MH division focuses on the themes that range from those that examine historical events in management practice and the development of management theories. Our field is open to a variety of philosophical approaches, while our methodological approaches include (but are not limited to) comparative works, case analyses, large-scale datasets, narrative discourses, and ethnography. The Management History Division is also recruiting scholarly program reviewers for the 2012 Academy of Management Annual Meeting. Please consider signing up as a reviewer as it is a visible way for you and your institution to being involved in the activities of the MH Division. 3 FROM THE 2012 PROGRAM CHAIR Greetings management historians ( a n d t o a l l i n t e r e s t e d i n management history). I d like to thank those of you who wrote me back with encouragement and comments in response to my recent to the division. It is much appreciated! As the fond memories of San Antonio recede and we immerse ourselves in the autumn term and other work activities, its time from the State of the Division report. First, a few facts: as of October 5, we have 409 members in the division.. That represents a small but steady increase over the past few years, even as a few divisions have experienced losses in members. Of the 409, 285 of us are academics, 66 are students; there are 32 executives and 26 hold emeritus status. Some 299 members are US based, so just over a fourth of our membership is now international. Following trends throughout the academy, much of the growth has indeed been in international members. This growth might be reflected in some very strong papers I have n o t i c e d w i t h i n t e r n a t i o n a l scholars and settings that have found their way into the division s program, which is a very positive development. Of course, most of our members are in other divisions too- led by 112 of us also being in OMT and 109 in BPS. Slightly fewer (98) are in OB. Since overall OB is a substantially bigger division that OMT, this may indicate our membership has a more macro or big picture orientation than many other academy members. (I m not sure what else it could mean, if anything, but just thought it was interesting.) A l o n g w i t h o u r e m e r g i n g initiatives, our new student representatives and the ongoing relationships with CASS, I m very hopeful these numbers and trends signal more interesting times on the way for the Division. 6 PLEASE WELCOME OUR NEW DOCTORAL STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES Foster Roberts is a Management PhD student at the University of Mississippi. His research has been published in Business Horizons. His specific field of interest is leadership of teams with changing membership, while his supporting field is management history. Prior to joining the Ole Miss doctoral program, he was Vice President of Operations for a moving and storage firm. Foster Roberts (froberts@bus.olemiss.edu), 320 Holman Hall, University, MS Jack Smothers is a doctoral student in Management at the University of Mississippi. Before becoming a doctoral student, Jack obtained a BSBA from Union University, an MBA from the University of Tennessee at Martin, and worked in higher academic administration at Union University. His research interests include leadership, entrepreneurship, business history, personnel selection, job design, business education, and workplace stress. Jack Smothers (jsmothers@bus.olemiss.edu), Management Ph.D. Student, The University of Mississippi Corinne Jenni is a doctoral student in Strategic Management at Alliant International University in San Diego, CA. She completed all her coursework and is currently writing her dissertation on Strategy and Leadership. Prior to her MBA in International Business, she was working in commodity trading in Switzerland where obtained her degree in Export and Trade. Corinne Jenni (jennicorinne@gmail.com), DBA Candidate, Alliant International University, San Diego, CA Andrew Hebdon is currently a management PhD student at the University of Mississippi. He received a B.S. in organizational communications at Montana State University Billings and an MBA from Virginia Tech. He has done work in sales within various industries such as communications, insurance, and software. He is currently involved in leadership research as well as stress, accountability, and impaired manager projects. Andrew S.
