1 TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION K-12 w/ INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST CERTIFICATE This program is offered ONLINE using Blackboard course management system and Elluminate virtual classroom/web conference environment. Mandatory initial and final class meetings are scheduled in Elluminate and require use of headset with microphone. Additional meetings in Elluminate may be scheduled throughout the semester and courses may also require real-time on-site meetings that can be arranged to accommodate students location. Courses follow session schedule and are not self-paced but are faculty-led, student-centered and highly interactive and supported learning experiences. The Master of Education in Technology in Education K-12 is designed for those who teach and those who support teachers and students in the use of instructional technology in K-12. Students in this program learn the effective application of technology in the classroom and obtain the knowledge and skills required to support teaching and learning with technology at the building, district, or Intermediate Unit level. This program enables teachers to select and integrate technology into the curriculum of their subject matter areas and grade level by emphasizing the use of technology as an instructional tool to address diverse learners, enhance teaching, and extend learning beyond the classroom. The program also prepares Instructional Technologists, technology coaches, technology coordinators, etc., to establish, support and maintain instructional technology as well as manage change necessary to adoption of emerging technologies, secure and manage funding for that technology and promote effective use in the classroom. Emphasis is on current technology along with an exploration of new and emerging technologies for both traditional and distance classrooms. Courses leading to a non-teaching certification as Instructional Technology Specialist may be taken separately. Instructional Technology Specialist Certification requires a 12-week internship under a cooperating instructional technology specialist and a University Supervisor. Education PREREQUISITE COURSES ED 577 Research Tools (1 credit) A course focused on the skills necessary to prepare academic papers, reports and literature reviews of published educational research. Participants learn to access and prepare material using APA style and word processing software. CE 500 Computer Tools for Educators () Designed to develop basic computer skills in the following areas: Digital file and management, MicroSoft Office (word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, desktop publishing) as well as the use of the Internet, multimedia, and graphics. Students learn basic educational technology terminology and applications to increase educator productivity, as well as methods of integrating computer skills into the curriculum to increase student productivity and learning. Mandatory initial and final online meetings will be held online in Web conference and require the use of headset with microphone. May be satisfied by portfolio or transfer of equivalent course with justification for waiver. If satisfied by portfolio or waiver, Distance Learning Orientation must be completed. ED 508 Law and Media in Education () Survey of legal rights and liabilities concerning use of various media in education. Topics covered are the requirements and exemptions under copyright law, intellectual property statutes and practices, ethics, software licensing, and privacy issues. Development of acceptable use policies and consideration of censorship, State Board Regulations, PDE Standards, and Local Board of Education policies are included. Mandatory initial and final online meetings held online in Web previous DeSales M.Ed. online course, or DeSales M.Ed. Distance Orientation. ED 504 Philosophy and Ethics in Education () A systematic study of the way philosophy illumines the goals, processes, and social contexts of education. The course examines the nature of various philosophical perspectives (realism, idealism, pragmatism, behaviorism, existentialism, reconstructionism, etc.), and their contributions to the experience of education in America today. semester. Pre-requisites: previous DeSales M.Ed. online course, or DeSales M.Ed. Distance Orientation.
3 DeSales University M.Ed. Programs 3 CORE COURSES ED 501 Educational Research () An introduction to theory and practice of educational research. Identifying the constituents of a research report, compare and critique various research methodologies, interpret and analyze research findings. Students also design, carry out, and report the results of an action research pilot study based on a question they develop. Mandatory initial and final online meetings held online in Web ED 577, and previous DeSales online M.Ed. course, or DeSales M.Ed. Distance Orientation. MAJOR COURSES CE 525 Software Collections () A comprehensive investigation of developing an educational software collection and the effective use of software in an instructional unit. Topics include classifying and evaluating software, legal issues, staff training in the use of applications, instructional Web resources, and other appropriate current issues. Mandatory initial and final online meetings held online in Web conference and require the use of headset with microphone. Additional online meetings may be scheduled throughout the semester.prerequisite: CE500. If no previous DeSales M.Ed. online course, DeSales M.Ed. CE 530 Computers in the K-12 Curriculum () An examination of how technology can be used to enhance the curriculum including studies of curriculum theory as they apply to learning with technology. Topics include the use of technology as a learning tool, and the role instructional design, teaching and learning styles in conceptualizing the use of technology to further instructional and curricular objectives. CE 553 Web Design For Educators () Web design and authoring in educational settings. Using Microsoft FrontPage and PhotoDraw, participants manipulate text, graphics, sounds, animated objects, and video to author web-related products. Emphasis is on the design and construction of web pages for classroom settings.

Programs 4 CE 536 Networking and Microcomputer Systems () An overview of components for the design, construction, and upgrading of computer systems along with the utilization of networking technology to interconnect systems to each other and the Internet. Includes networking models, protocols, software, and maintenance. Network security and ethical concerns are examined. CE 555 Management of Technology Resources () An examination of technology management issues at the building, district, Intermediate and institutional levels. Evaluation of technology plans, leadership techniques, curriculum review and development, the role of persons involved in technology in K-12 schools, and the management of professional development as it relates to technology. Mandatory initial and final online meetings held online in Web conference and require the use of headset with microphone. Additional online meetings may be scheduled throughout the semester. Prerequisite: CE500. If no previous DeSales M.Ed. online course, DeSales M.Ed. CE 550 Multimedia Classroom Applications () The design of multimedia projects that enhance learning in K-12 classrooms. Students will work with several multimedia programs, and learn to use digital cameras, camcorders, scanners, and other resources in creating multimedia classroom projects. Included are studies of curriculum theory as they apply to learning with technology and addressing learning styles through multimedia. CE 556 Distance and Emerging Technology () Explores the issues, challenges and best practices of distance learning in K-12 including courses taught as asynchronous online, blends of asynchronous and synchronous online components and hybrid courses. It provides an overview of the technologies used and those emerging as advanced technologies for teaching both at a distance and in traditional classroom settings. Mandatory initial and final online meetings held online in Web CE500. If no previous DeSales M.Ed. online course, DeSales M.Ed. Distance Orientation is required. CE 598 Instructional Technology Specialist Practicum () Supervised filed experience of ninety hours in a K-12 instructional technology setting. Students work with persons involved in instructional technology in local school districts or Intermediate Units where they assist with technology management, technology planning, staff training and other activities under mentorship and supervision. A fee of $300 is required. Prerequisites: ED508 and all other major courses leading to Specialist certification.
5 DeSales University M.Ed. Programs 5 CAPSTONE COURSE Students must take either ED 600 or EE 600 to earn M.Ed. degree. ED 600 Critical Issues and Research Seminar () A capstone course designed to refine and expand students capacity for evaluating and using research to develop practical applications for critical issues related to instruction, assessment and policy development in education. Students are required to identify a problem or issue in education and synthesize information to create, apply, and evaluate a solution. This course builds upon research project proposal created in ED501 and results in a research paper presented in a poster presentation to a panel of faculty reviewers. Prerequisites: ED577, ED501 and completion of 24 credits in the program. CE 600 Capstone Project: Technology in Education () The independent study alternative capstone project in the Master of Education in Instructional Technology K-12 Program. The student and the instructor design the research-based project. Students are required to identify a problem or issue in education and synthesize information to create, apply, and evaluate a solution. This course builds upon research project proposal created in ED501 and results in a product and associated research paper presented in a poster presentation to a panel of faculty reviewers. Prerequisites: ED577, ED501, and completion of 24 credits in program and approval of prospectus and proposal.
