New tools, new materials and new interfaces are emerging, while we are witnessing a radical change in technologies, in the economy, the way of thinking and human relationships. These developments pose heretofore unknown challenges for the arts as well with the traditional, rigid separation of individual art forms disappearing and new genres being born. It is this backdrop that calls for the rethinking of modern art education. Our Faculty of Communication and Arts has been founded in this spirit. Starting from scratch, there was no need to change an old fashioned educational structure or replace out-of-date technology. Indeed, we are very lucky being able to provide education of an international standard using state-of-the-art technology in a number of fields of art whose unique way of cooperation is unprecedented in Hungarian higher education. We are truly international, since in today s world tenders, commissions and markets are all international. Thus, being competitive means the ability to succeed in the world out there. Our faculty members are recruited from the top-ranking active professionals in the country, most of them being internationally renowned artists. They are the guarantee for a novel, up-to-date education and learning environment. Our teaching staff offer a solid grounding in art education developed and based on our decades-long professional experience. Nevertheless, the constantly and rapidly changing world expects the solutions to new challenges arising also from present and future students. One of them might be just you! 6 Student life STUDENT SUCCESSES The Student Council plays an active role in University life. The main functions of the council are the protection of students interests, the organization of events and strengthening the University s internal communication system. Every semester the council organises informative forums, sport events and late-night parties, which give you an insight into the social and cultural life of the country. All these activities aim to strengthen the studentlife feeling, make new friendships and take advantage of Hungary s unique knowledge system. The Student Council represents other student groups, such as the Marketing Student Team, the student magazine and the University s own radio station, bkfm. 10 CAMERAMAN BA The film industry is changing. Our pictures are shown on more and more types of surfaces and displays, and the final image is formed by the combination of a growing number of visual fields. This process is not yet completed, it has just begun. Therefore, at BKF we don t settle for teaching the technologies of the present time. We try to give a foundation by which we enable our students to keep up with yet unknown technologies in the future, and, in addition, to become the driving force of development. Gábor Szabó, HSC Gábor Szabó HSC college professor, Balázs Béla Awardwinning cinematographer, laureate of the Merited Artist Award C ameramen have a crucial role in creating moving images through which visual communication takes place. They are the ones who translate the concepts and ideas of film and television directors into pictures. Moving images become a final work of art as seen through their personal filter. To this end, they need to have both artistic skills and an upto-date knowledge of the latest technologies. In line with the complex approach typical of BKF, our students become familiar with related fields as well to foster a smooth cooperation with prospective colleagues. THE PROGRAMME IS DESIGNED FOR INDIVID- UALS WHO ARE interested in photography, films, filmmaking, video and television production. The ideal candidates have a mature visual sense and they are able to easily connect to and cooperate with fellow students and future colleagues. 11 CRAFTMANSHIP BA In our technocratic world everything that is unique and unparalleled is becoming increasingly valuable as a counterpoint to the strengthening trends of globalization. The art of crafts offers the chance to maintain traditions and recreate them at a higher level according to the expectations of our age. In addition to being functional, objects are also prints of the age, thinking and their creators. Their production requires responsible thinking, a thorough knowledge of the profession and an individual approach. These are the objectives that we wish to achieve working together with the students at the Craftsmanship program. Hajnal Baráth DLA habil. Hajnal Baráth DLA habil. college professor, Ferenczy Noémi Awardwinning tapestry and carpet designer N ew craftsmanship aims at acquiring and preserving traditional crafting techniques. Nevertheless, the latest technological developments and expectations of our age bring about new opportunities imposing new challenges and demanding the use of new materials. The program endeavours to maintain continuity with both the past and present. With respect to the past, our graduates are able to create works of art renewing the crafts of the 21st century. Due to the practice-oriented and art-centred approach and training methods, students become highly-skilled in the use of various techniques and materials at the same time creating their own individual world of objects. The experience and skills they acquire enable them to pass down their knowledge and continue their studies in arts or teacher training master programmes. THE PROGRAMME IS DESIGNED FOR INDIVID- UALS WHO have good drawing and manual dexterity skills and who are able to work independently creating individual works of art. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: as an independent artist, as a leader of workshops, study circles SPECIALIZATION: fashion and accessories design, ceramics, textile design By handing down professional values, knowledge, skills and crafting techniques to students, the aim of the specializations is to teach them the skills of efficient thinking and creating objects that reflect their creative identity. 12 FASHION AND ACCESSORIES DESIGN specialization I n the spirit of new craftsmanship, students focus on fashion, accessory and jewellery design acquiring the skills of creative designing and production. Building on the traditions of textile design, the aim is to foster students to become ready to satisfy the demands emerging in various fields of fashion and to challenge conventions. In addition to the professional skills of fashion design interpreted by visiting lecturers and young contemporary designers, students are also introduced to the world and operation of individual studios and small businesses, they become familiar with the process of delivering new collections from the rise of the demand to the final line of clothes and they get acquainted with the challenges they have to face in the international market. HEAD OF SPECIALIZATION: Krisztina Sárosi textile designer 22
13 TEXTILE DESIGN specialization T he specialization covers two major textile areas. It includes the learning and application of material design and the history, features and applications of the patterns created for the finished material. As a result of interdisciplinary research, our students learn about woven structures, materials and patterns, traditional spinning, weaving and printing techniques, and the needs and challenges of our age. Their works are prepared by manual and computer-aided design, and materialized by the latest materials and technologies. Students have the opportunity to become familiar with the criteria and processes of the creation of different autonomous and applied objects so that they can be engaged in independent creative work in their areas of expertise and they can lead professional courses. HEAD OF SPECIALIZATION: Hajnal Baráth DLA habil. college professor, Ferenczy Noémi Award-winning tapestry and carpet designer 24
14 CERAMICS specialization A s part of the tasks of the specialization, students are provided with comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge, no matter whether it is about the creation of either a functional or an independent object. In design situations students have the opportunity to become familiar with the processes which help their independent creative work and they can lead professional courses. They experience the special characteristics of ceramics and they learn how to use materials they meet at work freely. Working both individually and in teams, they become capable of recognizing problems occuring around them and developing their own proposals for solution. By their participation in contemporary art projects related to the specialization, students are given an insight into their organization and implementation processes. The success of the academic programme of the Ceramics specialization - connected to both sculpture and industrial design - is proven by the student successes at the National Scientific Students Associations Conference in sculpture and design categories. Our graduate students can continue their studies in arts or teacher training MA programmes. HEAD OF SPECIALIZATION: Ferenc Koleszár DLA college senior lecturer, ceramic designer 26

Our goal is to teach how it is possible to design and implement works of art, products, installations, services, and interactive applications which seek to satisfy those changing social and individual needs emerging in our environment. During the three years of the programme students learn about the three pillars of the profession: CREATIVITY The first year is about forming the fine arts mentality, visual logic and compositional skills, but above all, about the disclosure of personal creative skills. TECHNOLOGY The second year focuses on enhancing students technical knowledge, including hardware and software knowledge, primarily 2D and 3D design, and also interactive applications. CAREER During the third year students design and implement complex tasks and creative projects. In the course of these projects students can prepare for their graduate careers in real-life situations, in cooperation with the agents of the creative industry. THE PROGRAMME IS DESIGNED FOR INDIVID- UALS WHO have a keen interest in media design, computer music composing, animation, game design, data visualization, digital postproduction work and who are creative persons with a mature visual, technical sense and a critical insight. In addition, they are familiar with information technologies or prepared to acquire the IT knowledge and skills. 19 PHOTOGRAPHY BA Today we live in a world ruled by images. Masses have access to cheaper and cheaper imaging solutions and technology. Every second millions of photos are taken across the world. The immense volume of photos have not only completely changed the way photos are used but also our relation to images, while the sheer quantity of pictures is a telling sign of the infinite power of communication by means of images. If we wish to consciously use that power, we need to find the most suitable and efficient form and tool of visual presentation. This is our mission here. Gábor Gerhes, lecturer, Photography program, Munkácsy Mihály Award-winning artist Luca Gőbölyös DLA college associate professor, Balogh Rudolf Award-winning photographer During the course of the programme, students learn the visual design language of photography and how to use its analog and digital technical tools. It is our goal and responsibility to provide photographers graduating from us with credible professional knowledge, giving them the opportunity for continuous development and to stand their ground in any of the fields of photography. To make students feel free to apply the possibilities of photography to formulate their ideas, they need to be aware of and possess its technique and technological innovations. Photographers graduating from our institution learn to articulate their thoughts through their future works and stand their ground in the field of applied arts. During practical work they will be capable of individual artistic activity. Critical thinking becomes natural for them, and also that they express their own and others artistic activities verbally as well in order to join national and international discourses. THE PROGRAMME IS DESIGNED FOR INDIVID- UALS WHO ARE interested in visual communication; who - acquiring the forms of expression of photography - wish to create and preserve values. The ideal candidates have a mature visual sense and high standards with a disposition toward critical thinking, they are able to easily make contact and cooperate with fellow students and future colleagues. 20 PHOTOGRAPHY BA specializations fashion photography Fashion photography has been a very popular genre of photography for long since this gives artists the greatest freedom amongst the applied genres. There is a growing interest in this field of photography, hence the Fashion Photography specialization is going to be launched in the Photography programme. Our prospective students will learn about the history of fashion photography, the visual tools of the genre, they will have the opportunity to master how to think individually and creatively, and, of course, the high level technical knowledge essential for self-expression. Students will become familiar with the work of the major predecessors, the technical tools of fashion photography, and they will have the opportunity to establish their own style through various tasks. Our course is integrated at several points into the recommended curriculum of the Photography BA programme. Subsequent semesters are connected with some other educational programmes of BKF - fashion history, stylist work, multimedia - which are needed for the development of a fashion photographer career. WE RECOMMEND THIS SPECIALIZATION: for those who are attracted by the world of fashion, who take pictures in which the subject of the photograph - either it is an object or a model photo - is arranged by themselves, and feel creative enough for that, and have good communication skills. HEAD OF SPECIALIZATION: Tamás Vass photo artist photojournalist The aim of the specialization is to prepare students for the photojournalist profession. Students will become familiar with the work of the major predecessors, the tricks of the photojournalist profession, and they learn to narrate stories visually through practical work. The works of students are made available to the public on our website regularly. Our course is integrated at several points into the recommended curriculum of the Photography and Communication and Media science BA programmes, where our students learn journalism among others. Subsequent semesters are connected with some other educational programmes of BKF - journalism, web design, multimedia - which are needed for the development of a photo journalist career or for a potential diversification. In addition to the existing subjects of the Photography programme, we put an emphasis on the development of writing skills, on writing proposals for the preparation of projects, on the press and all types of visual journalism. WE RECOMMEND THIS SPECIALIZATION: for those who not only want to create a good picture but also report on important issues, and to document social issues sympathetically. Those students can achieve success in this field who are persistent, inquiring and want to know what is going on around the world. Those who are able to see the story, who can present what other people don t notice. HEAD OF SPECIALIZATION: Tamás Révész Balázs Béla-award winner, Pulitzer prize winner, World Press Photo Award winner photo artist, photographer 38
21 TELEVISION PRODUCTION ARTS BA Whether you see it in the cinema, watch them on a TV screen or on the Internet, motion pictures be it a documentary or fiction have the potential to make us wiser and free. But they soon turn out to be indecipherable labyrinths themselves. They are the tools both for recognition and deception. The means we have to discover and understand ourselves are extremely inefficient when it comes to the comprehension of our private life, politics, past and future, life, death and love. No wonder that now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror. After us, the picture flood: let s look right into the centre of the screen. Gusztáv Schubert: They do it with screens Ádám Born DLA college associate professor, Balázs Béla Award-winning director, laureate of the Pulitzer Memorial Prize A ll around the world, we can observe a renewal of television programmes. New formats and tools appear in our informal world, while the traditional approaches and forms of expression are still present. For this reason, we are committed to training professionals with complex skills, who are competent in creating television programmes individually, in various television genres, and whose professional knowledge covers such areas as the work of an editor, television show host, reporter, and broadcast director. Students become acquainted with the basics of electronic editing, and the use of television studios, broadcast units and mobile electronic devices. As professionals, they will be competent in performing news programs and multi-site live broadcasts. Students participating in this programme will become competent professionals in all of the different components of television program making. During the programme and with the help of professionals, we seek out and develop those contents and formats which are best suited to the individual skills of our students. THE PROGRAMME IS DESIGNED FOR INDIVID- UALS WHO ARE interested in the world of television, who are creative in their thinking and selection of news stories and topics. They have critical insight, good communication skills and they are able to work alone or connect to and cooperate with teams. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: as a television program producer, as a programme editor, as an editing-reporter, as a broadcasting director, as a correspondent.
